To think I shouldn't be THIS heavy??

Lotsofsausage · 01/05/2019 08:22

So to start, I know I am no supermodel. Fairly tall at 5'8, size 14, smaller waist, medium bust. Fairly curvy arse/ thighs but toned. I am fit and strong and exercise 4-5x per week, including strength training.

Now I know measurements and photos are a better gauge than the scales, and muscle is meant to weigh more than fat (but I thought that was bullshit).....I am 14.5 stone! I have a friend with the same body measurements as me and same height and she is TWO STONE lighter.
Can some people just be 'heavy'???

Stupid app posting twice 😑😑

justrestinginmybankaccount · 04/05/2019 17:12

Do the string test.
Get a piece of twine cut to your height. Double it on itself and wrap it around your natural waist, around your bellybutton. If the two ends meet, you’re ok. If not, you’re carrying fat around your middle, which won’t have anything to do with being big boned or heavy set or anything.

ParadiseInDisguise · 04/05/2019 17:18

So you are losing weight because you eat less?

No, no, no. Eating less is a consequence! It happened naturally. I didn’t count anything. I just don’t put foods that will send my insulin haywire in my mouth. I am eating less because my hunger has diminished and I naturally leave 5-6h between meals. Eating less is a consequence of the reduced drive to eat as your hormones balance themselves.

Lol at the facepalm 😂

That's exactly what she's saying, Paradise - you are, in fact, losing weight because you're eating less.

And you're eating less because you're eating the right stuff, which is fab 👍🏼 but it's still a fact that you're eating less.

Prequelle · 04/05/2019 17:29

Brilliant posts kennehora. I also want to post the findings from this study again

^Obese people who exercise regularly are 30 per cent more likely to die prematurely than healthy-weight people who do little exercise, according toa study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology.

Researchers from Umea University, Sweden, monitored 1.3 million men of various body types over a 30-year period. They found the top fifth in terms of fitness when they were 18 were 51 per cent less likely to die prematurely; however, the benefits of exercise were cancelled out when the men were significantly overweight. The study found there was an increased risk ofheart diseasein obese men, even if they exercised, and even bigger increases in some other causes of death, including alcohol or drug abuse, and suicide

Professor Peter Nordstrom, who led the study, said: “These results suggest low Body Mass Index (BMI) early in life is more important than high physical fitness with regard to reducing the risk of early death.”^

This subject is something that bothers me because I was that person who was obese. I had people telling me to eat intuitively, that I was beautiful, I was an average weight, that I didn't want to be skint and bone etc etc. It was ridiculous. I was suffering from health problems yet people were saying all these things and coming out with complete psuedo-science. It's why the posts on here from Paradise bother me because they're said with such authority and with such confidence that had I not been educated in human biology, anatomy and physiology, nutrition etc I would be lapping it up because it's what I would have wanted to hear when I was obese.

14.5 st at 5ft8 and a size 14 sounds normal

Can’t believe this. I’m about the same height and weigh over 4.5 stone less. I know everyone carries weight differently, but I’d be massive at this weight and obese according to BMI.

Fazackerley · 04/05/2019 17:39

I weigh 12.5 stone and am 5 8

Dr has told me to lose a stone.

I'm also a size 14/16 and am well proportioned.

ParadiseInDisguise · 04/05/2019 17:43

To illustrate my point of how much less I eat now, I had 3 boiled eggs and milky tea for breakfast at 11am and am only just eating my dinner at 6pm. I have not felt starving, I have not experienced any drop in energy, I was perfectly capable to get on with my day without any food from 11am till 6pm.

Haven’t used willpower once. Haven’t craved anything. Haven’t got the foggiest what my calorie count is and neither do I care. This has been life-changing.

Re beer being low carb, body cannot metabolise alcohol, so every single calorie is going to fat. Identical to processed sugar in fact. I don’t drink if I can help it as it is not helping me.

AlaskanOilBaron · 04/05/2019 17:52

I'm 5.8 and about 9.5 stone and I'm not skinny at all, I could easily lose 10 pounds - I would be straightforwardly fat if I gained 48 pounds. That would put me not too far away from 200 pounds!

ParadiseInDisguise · 04/05/2019 18:00

No, it is not BECAUSE I am eating less, it just happened on its own. I don’t want to eat as much as before. I don’t experience overpowering hunger any more. So unless I force feed myself against my will, my intake has been naturally going down. I stress it again, I do not monitor calorie values, I would eat a handful of nuts with my cup of tea which are supposed to be stupidly rich.

I never want to return to ‘everything in moderation’ which will mean eating sugary crap. If I lose weight as a result, great. I am working to reduce my fat percentage and build muscle. If building muscle slows me down or stops me losing weight, I don’t care. I am guided by improving my quality of life, not some unattainable (for me) figure on the scales. I see enough ‘normal weight’ women my age and older with sloping shoulders, poor posture and flabby bulging bellies. I don’t consider myself at higher health risk than them because I weigh in more on the scales.

Just proves my point that a person should go by their individual physique.

Research indicates otherwise though.
Just out of interest, what are you eating during the rest of the day? Because your breakfast was approx 250 cals, so quite low calorie.

Fazackerley · 04/05/2019 18:09

Lol at thinking better posture makes you healthier Grin

mumlikeaboss · 04/05/2019 18:21

Paradise, you are literally talking at cross purposes with yourself.

I'm not trying to say you've lost weight through dieting or counting calories or eating in moderation or anything like that. I'm not a fan of diets or restriction either, so I totally get where you're coming from.

Maybe you're not eating less in order to lose weight, BUT you have lost weight BECAUSE you are eating less. That's just logical. Why are you arguing so strongly against that??!!!

ParadiseInDisguise · 04/05/2019 18:29

Lol at thinking better posture makes you healthier grin

Fazakerley, you would be surprised exactly how important good posture it, for your internal organs among everything else. It would indicate poor muscle tone. It can also lead to a multitude of issues with your spine over time. And that does affect the quality of life in a big way.

TatianaLarina · 04/05/2019 18:34

I’m 5’11 and 9.5 stone and I’m not particularly skinny, altho according to BMI I’m underweight.

ParadiseInDisguise · 04/05/2019 18:54

To the poster who asked about what I have for the rest of the day. Obviously today isn’t over yet. Family had fish and chips, so I had battered mini fish and maybe 7 chips (which is very unusual, we rarely have fish and chips or takeaway dinners). Now I shall have two raw carrots and tea with milk. I wouldn’t need to eat for the rest of the day.

My normal day is omelette for breakfast, salad, vegetables and tinned sardines for late lunch (between 2-3pm) and meat/veg for dinner with melted butter instead of granule gravy. I may eat fruit in addition to that sometimes if I fancy something sweet or maybe a handful of nuts for energy if I didn’t have enough sleep.

I drink milky tea during the day, herbal teas, water with a drop of cider vinegar. Do not touch pop. Very very rarely any alcohol, and even then no more than a glass/few sips.

If I have something not great, like fish and chips today, I don’t beat myself up over it and just go back to my usual way of eating the next day. I sometimes fast for 36h as well, but need to be in the right frame of mind for that. After I fasted, I can feel the positive effect for two days after. Fasting has is the best impact on insulin according to research.

Fazackerley · 04/05/2019 18:55

So you basically eat fuck all. 1200 cals max.

All the durs on the planet.

Prequelle · 04/05/2019 18:57

Jesus Christ the bloody irony.

ParadiseInDisguise · 04/05/2019 19:03

Sometimes I skip lunch altogether if I had a bigger breakfast and do not feel hungry at 2-3pm. Bigger breakfast is say omelette and a few slices of hard cheese. Then just have dinner at 6-8pm.

mumlikeaboss · 04/05/2019 19:09

And yet you're not losing weight because of the fact you're eating less... 🙄

greenelephantscarf · 04/05/2019 19:11

how do you fare with the string test?
is your waist less than half your hight?

I'm 5.9 and at 13st would be seriously chubby.
am just above 11 and wear a size 12 or 14.

DieselSucker · 04/05/2019 19:11

I never understood people eating more in the evenings than in the morning and during the day when they should be burning their calories. No wonder they put weight on even that they mostly starve all day and only have a big supper. Better to have a good breakfast and lunch when you're more active and and a snack in the evening.

Fazackerley · 04/05/2019 19:12

Sorry paradise. Fab kudos to you for losing weight but yy are eating a tiny amount of calories which is why you are losing. Yes, giving up sugar stops you having cravings, but please. You are losing weight because you are eating a hugely restricted amount of calories.
