To expect fruit to last longer than two days?

I recently bought a pack of Oaklands easy peelers from a popular German supermarket and every day since one has gone mouldy. We ended up with 4 mouldy, 2 ok. So i'm asking how can it be cheaper shopping at these places?! It's a false economy. You pay more at other supermarkets but at least stuff lasts longer than a couple of days. Found reviews online saying exactly the same about these "amazing" low-cost supermarkets. I can't stand the places!

Lidl and Aldi is a waste of money if you cook from scratch.

Reddedder · 01/05/2019 07:34

I agree but you’re not allowed to bad mouth these shops on here.

Fairylea · 01/05/2019 07:41

This is why I never buy fruit or veg from Lidl or Aldi.

SprogletsMum · 01/05/2019 07:43

I buy all of my fruit and veg from Aldi and it's very rare any of it goes mouldy. I've got oranges in my fruit bowl that have been there for 2 weeks and they're fine. Maybe you were just unlucky.

TapasForTwo · 01/05/2019 07:44

I find that their fruit and veg don't last either.

EleanorReally · 01/05/2019 07:45

thats not good.
i bet they were cheap though

Lemonsquinky · 01/05/2019 07:57

I've stopped shopping there for the same reason. It's a false economy.

Drogosnextwife · 01/05/2019 07:58

I also think the chicken from Aldi goes off faster than anywhere else. Not sure about Lidl.

OldSpeclkledHen · 01/05/2019 07:59

Funny that... I find it lasts longer than Tesco's

AntiHop · 01/05/2019 07:59

I've never been impressed with lidl fruit and veg.

GinLimeandLemonade · 01/05/2019 08:05

The easy peelers in my fridge have been there for a couple of weeks and none are mouldy. They're from Aldi 🤷‍♀️ maybe it depends on the store...

skankingpiglet · 01/05/2019 08:09

I do part of my shop at Lidl. I find you do need to inspect all fruit and veg before putting it in the trolley. Some is already turning on the shelves, but as long as you don't pick those ones it's fine. You can't assume it's fine and grab the nearest pack like you might in other retailers.
I won't get all F&V from there however as I find some items (eg Granny Smith's) are tasteless.

Gramgram · 01/05/2019 08:10

I use ecoegg keep fresh for longer discs which seem to stop fruit going mouldy especially now the warmer weather is here.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 01/05/2019 08:12

I also think the chicken from Aldi goes off faster than anywhere else.

Chicken is the one meat which I refuse to buy from there anymore, I totally agree it goes 'off' very quick.

CitadelsofScience · 01/05/2019 08:17

This is why we still shop at Aldi but tend to do 2-3 shops a week rather than just one. I like the fact our weekly food shop is much cheaper in there, I think in part because you don't have the massive range of products, but all the fruit, veg and meat (esp chicken) goes off far quicker, sometimes even before it's use by date.

Bringbackthestripes · 01/05/2019 08:19

The apples in my fruit bowl were bought a week ago from Aldi and are fine. The satsumas have been there two weeks and are still fine. I occasionally get a satsuma going mouldy after 4/5 days but not often. Whereas produce from our local Tesco & Asda are gone after only 2/3 days. I think it is down to the storing/handling at their local depot and store that affects it rather than suppliers.

I was once in my local Tesco at 7am and saw the produce lads unwrapping pre packed broccoli that was out of date and putting it out as loose broccoli Head office & store manager were not interested!

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 01/05/2019 08:21

You can not do a weekly shop say Thursday, with veg for Sunday dinner and fruit and veg throughout the week, as it all goes off by Saturday. So you end up binning it and buying again. I thought it was bad luck the first few times, but it’s been every time. I can buy the same elsewhere and it lasts well over a week or two. You are paying a little extra but it works out cheaper. I don’t have one of these stores close to me so would have to travel every two days to buy it, 12 mile round trip up a mountain each time is a lot of fuel to use. It’s a false economy.

CheshireChat · 01/05/2019 08:23

The fruit and veg from my local ones are absolutely fine. By far prefer the meat from Lidl as well.

EleanorReally · 01/05/2019 08:28

apples are better stored in the fridge ime, not satsumas though?

Singlebutmarried · 01/05/2019 08:29

I drop DD to her activity 3 times a week and it’s near both Aldi and Lidl.

I do find the fruit isn’t as good there, but as I’m there more or less 3 times a week it doesn’t matter.

Fizzyhedgehog · 01/05/2019 09:00

I've stopped getting fruit from Lidl but Aldi seems ok. Weve recently moved and I still don't know where the nearest greengrocer is.

AbsentmindedWoman · 01/05/2019 09:12

Can anyone recommend where you get your best bananas from?

I am tormented by bananas. Just this morning I've had to put FOUR in the bin that basically turned to grey sludge, that looked fine when bought on Monday.

BlueSkiesLies · 01/05/2019 09:14

I don’t find the fruit and veg last either from there

Persimmonn · 01/05/2019 09:17

Interesting. The fruit and veg from Lidl used to go off quickly, but Aldi is really ok. I’ve never had a problem. I’ve got some satsumas from over a week ago and they’re still ok in the bowl. You shouldn’t put certain fruit together in a bowl as they ripen quickly. I think apples go off with bananas or something like that.

Summersunsareglowing · 01/05/2019 09:18

Their crispy salads in the attic cartons last really well (although my fridge freezer does have a very good salad crisper). Their Pink Last apples areas good as most places but just smaller. Oranges are a minefield from anywhere except M&S.
