To hope that Tony Slattery will be back on the TV again soon.

I take it you're referring to the Guardian article, I didn't recognise him and it made me really sad. He's a talented guy and I used to really fancy him, maybe he could start on Radio 4 and see how it goes.

Cel982 · 30/04/2019 22:20

It was very sad, I didn't recognise him at all and I would have been a big fan back in the 90s.

Clawdy · 30/04/2019 22:20

Such a sad article, he is obviously very troubled. He was so talented and good-looking when he was younger.

Letthemysterybe · 30/04/2019 22:20

He used to make me laugh so much.

Divebar · 30/04/2019 22:22

He was great - he was definitely my favourite on Whose Line is it anyway.

Etino · 30/04/2019 22:30

Bloody hell that’s a nasty article.

SavageBeauty73 · 30/04/2019 22:31

Terrible article. Very cruel. I always wondered what happened to him.

ShitAtScarbble · 30/04/2019 22:31

Oh that is such a sad article. I loved Tony Slattery back in the day - he does sound like a very troubled soul.
Poor sod - I hope things improve for him

Clawdy · 30/04/2019 22:34

Was it cruel? I got the impression Hadley F rather liked him, and was sorry for him.

Divebar · 30/04/2019 22:37

I didn’t think it was cruel.

FlutterShite · 30/04/2019 22:40

I think it's the reality of his life that is cruel. I thought the article was written with a lot of care and warmth for Tony, and I suspect the brutal honesty was what he wanted to convey. Brave man.

Molly333 · 30/04/2019 22:42

Can some one summarise the article please

FreezerBird · 30/04/2019 22:43

I think it's the reality of his life that is cruel. I thought the article was written with a lot of care and warmth for Tony, and I suspect the brutal honesty was what he wanted to convey. Brave man.

Both he and Hadley F have been very clear on twitter that he's happy with the piece and that yes, the brutal.honesty was what he wanted.

I was really moved by the description of him talking about his partner and the power of unconditional love.

SluggishSnail · 30/04/2019 22:45

He was fab in the early nineties! Not so much in the middle nineties.
I hadn't realised he'd dropped off the radar for so long and in such a big way.
Doubt his career will rekindle at this point though, even if he is doing G2 interviews.

ThriftyMcThrifty · 30/04/2019 22:45

I didn’t find the article cruel, I thought it was very sympathetic. He clearly wants to tell the real story of his illness and I have huge admiration for him making that decision. I hope this marks the start of a comeback for him.

FlutterShite · 30/04/2019 22:47

Yes, Freezer, that was very moving. The whole piece portrayed him as an interesting character who's battled some terrible demons and, as Freeman says at the end, really does deserve a better outcome.

64sNewName · 30/04/2019 22:52

I found it shocking, but only because I’d no idea things had gone so wrong for him. Wasn’t very aware of him in the nineties beyond knowing his name.

The article left me a bit emotional/troubled so I looked at Twitter afterwards and was pleased to see he’s on there interacting and getting positive messages from people.

As a reader my impression of Hadley F is that she has good judgement/is kind. I wouldn’t imagine she would present the piece that way if she had reason to believe it would make Tony feel worse.

RhubarbIsEvil · 30/04/2019 22:54

Is he on Twitter? What’s his handle?

WTFisThat · 30/04/2019 22:54

I feel so bad for him Sad loved him when he was on whose line is it anyway.

LellyMcKelly · 30/04/2019 22:55

I don’t think it was a horrible article- he didn’t either as he retweeted it himself. I loved him back in the day. I remember him on a talk show (might have been Wogan) and Joan Collins was flirting outrageously with him. Brilliant TV.

ByeClaire · 30/04/2019 22:59

Just read it. I had a crush on Tony Slattery back in the 1990s. I don't think it's a cruel article at all and agree that it's his life and revelations that are cruel.

I can't help but cynically wonder if some of the posh celeb friends of his from his Footlights days will rekindle their acquaintance now there's been an article about how most of his friends abandoned him. Hmm

CrispbuttyNo1 · 30/04/2019 23:01

On twitter he has said he is happy with the article. I was shocked at what has happened to him. He was a very funny and witty comedian who was excellent on Whose Line is it anyway.

TheBulb · 30/04/2019 23:04

It’s not in the least cruel! I bought it was very tender, but didn’t pull any punches on what has happened since his glory days.

Why are people saying it’s ‘cruel’? Was HF supposed to conceal his addiction and bipolar disorder, get the photographer to photoshop like mad, and say he barely looks 45? I think she trod a difficult line between honesty and kindness, and her obvious shock and liking for him are clear.

HennyPennyHorror · 30/04/2019 23:05

It's quite obvious he's had huge problems. Alcohol ravages people. I love Tony Slattery and hope that his Edinburgh show goes really well and he has a second chance at fame. He is a lovely man.
