To hope that Tony Slattery will be back on the TV again soon.

OP posts:

He accidentally bought me a drink when I was 17. Happy days!

megletthesecond · 30/04/2019 23:08

I didn't think it was a cruel article.
I get the impression that after the years of crap he's been through he's still a nice bloke.

SwedishEdith · 30/04/2019 23:12

He is on Twitter and the support and affection he's getting is very touching. I thought the article was very sensitive but was pleased to read he was still happily with his partner.

Sewrainbow · 30/04/2019 23:14

That was a sad article, such a shame I adored him on WLIIA my favourite show as a teen and I had major crush on him Blush

The article wasn't written cruelly, but his life took a sorrowful, cruel turn.

I wish him success in Edinburgh, if I lived closer I'd go.

Butterymuffin · 30/04/2019 23:15

How sad that hardly any friends kept in touch. Though maybe it strained the friendships beyond repair. I hope he can find something to do that makes a new start for him.

Iamnotagoddess · 30/04/2019 23:17

Loving the calls on Twitter for him to have a stab at chairing HIGNFY.

That would be awesome.

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 30/04/2019 23:19

Poor soul.

That wasn’t a cruel article at all, I could feel Hadley’s warmth and affection for him in every word.

His partner sounds an amazing guy. Would that we could all have someone who will stick by us through thick and thin, you can’t put a price on that.

WeldMeDaphne · 30/04/2019 23:20

I thought it was brave of him to be so honest. I loved him back in the 90s on WLIIA and from time to time wondered where he’d gone. Hoping this publicity will give him the opportunity to get back on the telly- he was really great.

flyingspaghettimonster · 30/04/2019 23:21

You could see he was drinking and doing to much cocaine on whose line is it anyway... even as a kid I could sense something pent up in him, always twitching, unable to sit still, sometimes fiercely brilliant, but othertimes unbelievably lazy throughout a whole episode, barely managing to come up with anything at all. I had a crush on him too, even when he started to wear bigger and bigger suits to hide his weight. He just seemed so fiercely intelligent and dangerously exciting. It is really sad that he burned out so young. I hope he does come back to our screens, but only if it can be done without jeopardizing his mental health. It doesn't sound like fame was very good for him.

butididnttickthebox · 30/04/2019 23:22

It wasn't a cruel article. It was raw and personal, but written with respect. The parts about his partner were just lovely, I found myself feeling so happy that he has had that unconditional love through his adult life, even when he was at rock bottom.

Thisnamechanger · 30/04/2019 23:25

I think he's insane to go to Edinburgh fringe. I go up every year for work and the comics generally come back half a stone lighter, with a hacking cough, no money and a borderline drink problem. One of the got pneumonia last year.

ahtellthee · 30/04/2019 23:25

Another one who had a crush on him. I hope that he is able to make this work.

supersop60 · 30/04/2019 23:26

I never liked him on Whose Line is it Anyway. He didn't play the game properly, and if he didn't know what to say, he'd make a fatuous remark or say poo or bum or similar.

JustCallMeSliths · 30/04/2019 23:29

I thought it was a beautifully written article. Yes it's sad but the writer showed real tenderness whilst being completely honest.

BedraggledBlitz · 30/04/2019 23:29

Twitter picks the oddest causes to champion. People power to get Tony slattery on any panel show that'll have him. Random.

I don't wish him ill, but a synthetic kick into the spotlight might not be what a bipolar alcoholic really needs.

Bestfootforward1 · 30/04/2019 23:30

Used to love TS. Such a talented guy.

NewAndImprovedNorks · 30/04/2019 23:31

Bloody mental health
Bloody bastarding mental health problems
It’s CRAP

iogo · 30/04/2019 23:32

I also thought it was a very touching and sad article. I thought the writer was very respectful.

*Loving the calls on Twitter for him to have a stab at chairing HIGNFY.

I think he'd be fab on Just A Minute.

GodDammitAmy · 30/04/2019 23:46

I was shocked by the picture - no matter how many times I look I just can't see any trace of who he used to be. I thought the article was very honest and sad, but written from a place of affection and respect. I think he will find he has real support if he wants to make a come back. I wonder if his wit has stayed as sharp. I hope so.

CSIblonde · 30/04/2019 23:52

It was so weird, id just Googled him the night before that article, wondering what he was up to these days as I used to love Whose Line is it Anyway & was on a nostalgia trip re 80's comedy & music. It was sad he's struggled with bi polar but he seems to have a lovely long term partner which must be a real comfort & support. I think it was a sympathetic interview.

DollyPartonsBeard · 30/04/2019 23:57

I really hope that if he starts performing again that his partner and agent/manager/whoever look after him and keep him as safe as is feasible. Stress is terrible for causing bipolar relapses (I live with it too) and he said in the article he's no longer taking medication, which will make him more vulnerable still. I found the end of it slightly worrying, when he said anything could happen between now and his birthday later this year, there almost seemed to be a whiff of fatalism/ nihilism there.

Bless him. I was a big fan back in the day.

JaneJeffer · 01/05/2019 00:09

So sad. I'm more worried about his leg than anything. I hope he's seeing a doctor for it. His partner sounds like an amazing man. And fuck that priest.

Time40 · 01/05/2019 00:19

In the main, I thought it was a sympathetic article, but I did think it was cruel that she mentioned one particular thing about him (if you have read the article, you can probably guess, but I'm certainly not going to repeat it).

alittleprivacy · 01/05/2019 00:19

All of this. I was a teenager in the 90s and that that dangerously exciting vibe was a massive turn on. I always thought he was a bit of an odd crush and he was a bit of a guilty pleasure. Turns out that I wasn't at all alone in recognising his attractiveness, as so many posters are admitting the same. Sad how life turned out for him.
