To think this is grim

I took my youngest to a messy play class for the first time today. It was from age 6 months - 2 years. When we were getting cleaned up at the end, I noticed that several of the little ones were wearing swim nappies Confused

There was no water at the session but there were wet textures like custard and spaghetti. Obviously a lot of the babies are putting these in their mouth, so surely it's totally grim for them to also be in swim nappies in them on the basis there's likely pee in there too?!

Eh?

Boom45 · 30/04/2019 21:59

Are you worried they'll leak? So long as they go on shortly before the session I don't think they're anymore likely to leak then regular nappies. Probably less as they're designed to be able to get wet from the outside and still contain their contents.

Boom45 · 30/04/2019 22:00

Or are the babies putting the swim nappies in their mouths? Because that's a bit odd.

HipHipHippoo · 30/04/2019 22:01

Swim nappies only contain poo, not urine.

Huh?

Buscake · 30/04/2019 22:03

Agree - that is gross 🤮

Tartsamazeballs · 30/04/2019 22:05

That's grim, you're right that swim nappies only hold solids, been peed on a few times in toddler swim lessons! That's really not sanitary at all, sharing dribble is one thing but pee is another.

firawla · 30/04/2019 22:06

Yanbu - seems totally unnecessary and a bit weird for them to be in swim nappies for this

RogueV · 30/04/2019 22:07

Yep grim - why didn’t they just put a normal nappy on the child?! Confused

Paddingtonthebear · 30/04/2019 22:08

Disposable swim nappies don’t reliably contain poo. That’s why most swimming schools require a neoprene over-nappy over the top of the disposable swim nappy

Italiandreams · 30/04/2019 22:10

When I have been to messy play activities the instructions often suggest putting children in swim nappies, didn’t realise the don’t contain the wee!

Italiandreams · 30/04/2019 22:18

That’s probably why

To think this is grim
Sallyseagull · 30/04/2019 22:21

YANBU.

I now have a mental image of babies eating pissy pasta.

usernameuser · 30/04/2019 22:26

I didn't know swim nappies don't contain the wee. WTH? 😱

Musicalstatues · 30/04/2019 22:28

Swim nappies CAN’T contain wee - if they did they would a act just like a normal and swell up when wet so completely pointless!!

So yes that’s gross. I can’t imagine they’d get wet enough at messy play to make wearing a normal nappy impossible.

WonkyDonk87 · 30/04/2019 22:36

Erm..... slightly manky derail of thread, but if they don't hold water then what happens if a non-weaned baby poos in them? I've been looking at baby swimming lessons but don't think I can risk it with my explosive baby now Confused

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 30/04/2019 22:37

I didn't know that either!

cdtaylornats · 30/04/2019 22:38

URINE is sterile because it contains no living organisms, unless the person that produces is unlucky enough to have a urinary tract or bladder infection. There are less bacteria in urine than in tap water, for example. But drinking tap water is (generally) safe because it contains no toxic substances.

Notcontent · 30/04/2019 22:43

I think a lot of people don’t understand how swim nappies work. Totally inappropriate for a “messy play” session. They should be wearing a normal nappy with a pair of those plastic pants over the top.

Sallyseagull · 30/04/2019 22:43

cdtaylornats

That being said, I still wouldn't want my DS eating pissy pasta.

AppleKatie · 30/04/2019 22:45

Swim nappies are the equivalent of wrapping a bit of non absorbing material around babies bum. They act as a physical barrier to give you time to get the child and poo away from the water but they do nothing for wee because whilst it sounds icky there is no public health risk from a bit of baby wee in a swimming pool.

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 30/04/2019 22:47

wonkydonk most baby swimming lessons (or pools), request a swim nappy (the disposable type one) plus a neoprene outer too which stops leaks.

I found out swim nappies only contain solids when I tried to be organised with a baby on the way swimming and got dd all ready. By the time I got to the pool she was soaked with wee

janetforpresident · 30/04/2019 22:47

I really didn't know this. I doubt the parents of these babies do too. Now I know it seems obvious but I really didn't before!!

Catmum26 · 30/04/2019 22:47

@WonkyDonk87 that’s why most swim schools require a neoprene nappy over the top of a swim nappy

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 30/04/2019 22:49

Oh I also forgot to say

Obviously swimming pools contain chlorine and filters for the water and water I large quantities so baby wee is gross but not too bad.
A paddling pool is less dilute and presumably just tap water.

I would ask the person running the session why they allow swim nappies and maybe mention that they don't contaim water they may not realise
