To think this is grim

I took my youngest to a messy play class for the first time today. It was from age 6 months - 2 years. When we were getting cleaned up at the end, I noticed that several of the little ones were wearing swim nappies Confused

There was no water at the session but there were wet textures like custard and spaghetti. Obviously a lot of the babies are putting these in their mouth, so surely it's totally grim for them to also be in swim nappies in them on the basis there's likely pee in there too?!

Thanks @Needcoffeecoffeecoffee and @Catmum26..... still not sure I can trust her - she ruins both the vest AND sleepsuit very time Sad

I've just remembered I used swim nappies on DS a few times when I'd run out of his usual nappies. In retrospect, that could have gone very wrong.

Urine is not sterile.

I love the look on people’s faces when you tell them swim nappies don’t contain wee...some people can be very rude & belligerent. If you stay calm and ask them how they think the nappy knows the difference between wee & pool water Hmm it’s hilarious watching the penny drop! 🤣 the nicer ones then apologise.

It’s totally common sense, but lots of people don’t give it any thought on the basis that it’s a nappy.

...just talk to the people running it.

Yup grim. Swim nappies are only for containing poo! They are literally designed to let wee out or they would puff up in the water like a regular nappy.

Thanks for telling me this about swim nappies - I didn't know.

We are going on holiday soon and LG will be 5 months. She will be wearing a full body wetsuit and a disposable swim nappy.

Do you think I still we'd to put a reusable nappy on over be top of the disposable one, or will the wetsuit provide enough containment?

You need a disposable swim nappy on first then a neoprene over-nappy on top. These are bigger and have a stretchy band around the tummy and legs and will stop any poo leaks into the pool. The disposable swim nappies cannot be relief upon to contain poo. There are many brands on the market but Splashabout, in my opinion, make the best neoprene over nappies. They are called Happy Nappies. You can wash them in the machine afterwards. They also make costumes and wet suits that have the happy nappy built in. If your child poos in the pool the pool is supposed to be fully closed for cleaning. Unfortunately some swimming pools just think scooping it out is fine. It’s not. everyone should be using a double nappy system for swimming as the consequences otherwise are utterly grim but some people just think a swim nappy is fine. It isn’t!

Just want to thank those for this post because I had absolutely no idea that swim nappies only held solids. We are going away soon on our first family holiday & plan to take DS swimming for the first time. I now know not to get him all ready in the swim nappy until we are actually ready to go swimming!
