..then you should really vacuum the stairs and hall way?

Seriously, it was absolutely covered in crap. I saw a toe nail.

Same goes for people selling stuff on Facebook.
"Could do with a clean".
Are you kidding? Clean it!

I remember me and my friend going on a very boozy holiday, we rented an apartment. We were completely out of it and during the night I rolled over and smashed the ash tray all over us. Our clothes/makeup were all over the floor and We were both in the same bed naked (not sure why - we are both straight!)

Anyway, woke up to an estate agent opening the bedroom door with a couple in tow!

He looked at us and pointed out the window and said something in Spanish then walked around the rest of the apartment. We thought we were dreaming when we woke up. They got more than they bargained for that’s for sure.

PurpleDaisies · 27/04/2019 22:02

If you want a sale, then vacuum

A house being dirty wouldn’t stop me buying it. I would judge the owner as a slob though.

Passthecherrycoke · 27/04/2019 22:04

Spagbol 🤣🤣

Veryangryvicuna · 27/04/2019 22:11

NS2SW you didn’t view my house did you?! Back when I was in my 20s, me and then boyfriend (now DH) we’re leaving our tenancy to buy together. It was a 4 bed detached on a new estate. The agent forgot to tell us about a viewing at 10am on a Sunday morning...which by some bad luck coincided with us having had a big night out the night before and everyone back to our place - with no one going to be til gone 5am...

So 10am rolls around, woken by banging on the door, and DH opens the front door in his pants to the agent and a couple 🙈. They don’t cancel the viewing, but come in and make the unfortunate tour around a house covered in empty drinks glasses /cans and scantily glad young professionals all over the shop...🤦🏻‍♀️ 2 half naked in the sofa, and more in every bed, including couples. I could have died with embarrassment...😩

according to this BBC calculator www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-23234033
a 10% deposit and a 225k mortgage for 25 years ( £1380 a month) ie 250K in total
will buy you a 3 bed property in 78% of the UK
in fact a deposit of 15K and 135K mortgage (829 per month) will get you a 3 bed house in 48% of UK which is half of UK

half a million 50k deposit 450k mortgage (2253 monthly) will get 3 bed house in over 98% of the country so just about 7-8 areas of inner London where 500k will not get a 3 bed property ( islington Kensington Richmond etc)

MontStMichel · 27/04/2019 22:16

I checked on Rightmove for our home town, half a million would give you a choice of two three bedroom semis! A two bedroom flat would be £300,000 plus....

Passthecherrycoke · 27/04/2019 22:18

It doesn’t really matter what 1/2m will get you but it’s worth remembering not everyone is a first time buyer Hmm not everyone is on minimal deposits

NW2SW · 27/04/2019 22:21

veryangry we did! No warning and it was only a two bed so we were shocked after the first one and didn't expect a double whammy

Stuckforthefourthtime · 27/04/2019 22:24

@TeacupDrama something must be wrong with those calculations. When we moved to London (several years back now) we had a £500k budget and thought it was big until we actually started looking. We struggled to find family-size 3 beds that were decent for commuting, schools and the like - and we definitely weren't looking at zone 1-2 or fancy locations!

WatchingFromTheWings · 27/04/2019 22:24

Turd Towers

🤣🤣🤣

Passthecherrycoke · 27/04/2019 22:27

Well Rightmove currently has 276 properties on for £500k and the first page are all houses so it’s easy enough. The schools can be tricky, but hey, I lived in SW1 and the schools were a nightmare there, and a 3 bed house is millions

Passthecherrycoke · 27/04/2019 22:33

^^ sorry 276 properties in London

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 27/04/2019 22:37

If I’d spotted the amount of cat hair in the radiator and oven of the house we bought perhaps I would have been alert to the years of poor maintenance, neglect and bodging.

I would be suspicious of people who couldn’t be fucked to clean and tidy for a viewing. I would worry what else they couldn’t be fucked to do.

Andromeida59 · 27/04/2019 22:40

I went to a group viewing once where, unbeknownst to us, the house had been repossed. The former owner turner up to the viewing with a small crying child in tow shouting about it being "his" house. It was incredibly uncomfortable and we left instead of viewing.

Echobelly · 27/04/2019 22:48

We went to an open day at a house, which turned out to be a set of bedsits where clearly none of the poor residents had been told the open day viewing was happening! We were told we'd have to knock on people's doors to get permission to look inside each room, and we did not feel comfortable doing that, especially as I think it was quite likely some residents were night shift workers who'd be asleep.

Mortgages · 27/04/2019 22:48

No half a million is a lot of money.
Houses are overpriced in this country.

Hanumantelpiece · 27/04/2019 22:56

Am selling a relative's property - 50 miles from where I live. Can't vaccuum as their hoover is broken and I'm not taking mine on the train to get it there.
And before anyone asks, no, I can't ask a neighbour, I don't know them, and no, there is nowhere to park so I can't drive there.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 27/04/2019 22:56

it’s worth remembering not everyone is a first time buyernot everyone is on minimal deposits, I think people are more than aware of that PassTheCherryCoke. It's more the hilarious rush to put OP firmly in her place and let her know she's a peasant who should bloody-well expect toe-nails on the carpet for a paltry half a mil.

Happens with the 'My DH is a high earner' threads too, when it transpires the DH in question is on 60k and everyone rushes in to denounce them as deluded paupers.

Mssngvwls · 27/04/2019 23:22

Tbh not sure I could be bothered hoovering before a viewing and I wouldn't judge someone who hadn't. They might be selling but presumably still have to work, do the school run, shopping, dinners etc. Life goes on.

Buy a house or don't buy a house but don't base it on whether someone has hoovered the stairs Confused

SandyY2K · 27/04/2019 23:41

A colleague said her DH was always sabotaging the sale by leaving the place in a mess.

You also get tenants who dont want to move, so they leave the place messy.

I think noticing and commenting on a toenail is a bit pedantic tbh. That surely wouldn't affect my decision to purchase a house.

Cherrysoup · 27/04/2019 23:46

Half a million sounds like a lot but it's not really...500k would just about get you a very average 3 bed semi where I live if you were lucky.

Same, but suits my retirement plans to move somewhere cheaper, nice bit of land for dogs and ponies.

I once viewed a house where the bloke was asleep on the sofa so we crept round, so mad! There was a rat in an overflowing cage in the bathroom and you apparently got used to the 4am freight trains at the bottom of the garden. We declined that one.

I have to say, every time I've put up a house for sale, it's been totally sparkling. I even repainted the hallway for a mate coming to stay!

AndOutComeTheBoobs · 28/04/2019 07:25

I didn't comment on it.
I posted it on here.

I didn't want the house for many other reasons but the toenail just baffled me.

madcatladyforever · 28/04/2019 07:27

Yes. All the houses I've viewed are vile. Dirty and no attempt at making them look nice. Horrible.

FiveShelties · 28/04/2019 07:32

We thought of buying a Post Office/General Store years ago. One of them did sandwiches etc and when we walked around the accommodation at the rear there was dog shit everywhere. Put me off buying lunch anywhere for ages.

AndOutComeTheBoobs · 28/04/2019 07:40

Once again it's nothing to do with how much it is.

Whether it's 500k or 5mil.

If you want to sell something, do the bare basics of making it look tidy.

As I said in my OP its the same when someone tries to sell something on Facebook and announce it "could do with a clean."
