I saw the end of a rainbow!

Had a shitty couple of days. The very expensive van my son bought to start new business blew up before he got it home and we both spent 2 hours in freezing rain waiting for the AA to rescue us from side of the motorway.
Returned said van this morning and stood in freezing rain demonstrating exactly how the engine blew up.
Long drive home up motorway. Rain stopped. Sun came out, and I actually saw the end of a fantastically bright rainbow

No gold though.

Anyone else seen one? Or maybe you have had a little bit if joy after a rotten day?

Well I never knew rainbows were circular

They’re not... the earth gets in the way. A rainbow forms an arc of a circle. Imagine a straight line that goes from the sun through the rainbow’s observer. The centre of the circle’s arc
will be on that line in the direction of observation.

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 27/04/2019 20:40

of course rainbows have ends, I have photographed more than you can shake a stick at.

you won't reach it as it's a "projected image" but they still have ends.

That's like saying pregnant women have no feet cos they can't see them

Oakenbeach · 27/04/2019 20:40

They’re not... the earth gets in the way

Sorry, it at ground level... it’s just about possible to get a circular rainbow on a plane/helicopter if the sun is low enough in the sky and the rain cloud is close.
enough.

Oakenbeach · 27/04/2019 20:43

of course rainbows have ends

You’re of course right, I meant a rainbow doesn’t have ends that can actually be reached by its observer.

Rumbletum2 · 27/04/2019 20:43

One ended at the side of next doors shed when I was little.

Supergrassyknoll · 27/04/2019 20:52

I'm sorry you had such a shite time, and no, (only in Elmer and the Rainbow!) but I did see an upside down rainbow once!

Oakenbeach · 27/04/2019 20:54

Steala

Your photo isn’t a rainbow. What you’ve posted is the effect of sunlight polarisation

I have also seen the end of a rainbow - it might have been an optical illusion or whatever but it LOOKED like the end - it went into a field.

I’ve also had rain start a few metres away from me when I was still in the dry! That was cool too.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 27/04/2019 21:08

I drove through a rainbow once - don't care what anybody says, I did, it was lovely.

I saw a leprechaun once too. Can’t prove i didn’t so I must have Hmm

Huntlybyelection · 27/04/2019 21:40

I was being serious in my response Grin

PookieDo · 27/04/2019 21:45

When my DC were little if we saw a rainbow in the car we would always chase it and try to ‘catch it’
I don’t think they remember doing it but it was so special to me

brizzlemint · 27/04/2019 21:49

So what if it's sunlight polarisation, it looks like the end of the rainbow and if it makes the OP happy.

Pictures of unicorns make people happy and nobody goes on about how they aren't real don't tell me

7Days · 27/04/2019 21:49

Give over lads she had a white day and something cheered her up.
I've seen a circular rainbow from a plane.
I hate you normally, Michael O'Leary but it was a beautiful thing to see

Surfskatefamily · 27/04/2019 21:54

There is no end...its circular. Would be lovely if it were since i could do with a pot of gold right now

IWantMyHatBack · 27/04/2019 22:17

I think I'm right in saying that all rainbows are double rainbows? The second one is usually harder to see and often barely visible

LarryGreysonsDoor · 27/04/2019 22:56

In fairness I was once told on here that if you walked to the end of your garden you would see the other side of clouds in the sky......

I’m glad it cheered up your day op.

My kids, DH and I drove 4 hours to Scotland to collect our dogs ashes last summer. It was raining on the way and in my head I said that I'd take it as a sign if I saw a rainbow that the dog was at peace. I saw one on the way home but didn't think much of it as I knew deep down I was likely to see one during summer rain. I then saw about 4 or 5 rainbows in succession then one suddenly appeared on the bonnet of our car as we drove and lingered for about 10 seconds. As I could see it, it was above my knees where I was holding the ashes close. I sobbed 'happily' as I explained to DH how I had asked for a sign. He didn't get fully on board with it being a sign but had to admit he had never seen anything like it and he's driven the length and breadth of the country.

SignOnTheWindow · 27/04/2019 23:16

@Tartsamazeballs I love that stretch of river! Great pic.

Fiveredbricks · 27/04/2019 23:17

I saw both ends of one a few weeks ago! It was falling across a field I was driving past. I had to stop the car. It was beautiful!

Katinski · 27/04/2019 23:25

I saw a double rainbow once. I was on the A38 driving between Gloucester and Tewkesbury and there they were. Years ago and never forgotten the sight.Magical.

Steala · 27/04/2019 23:36

Oakenbeach, thank you for the link. I do t think it is the same as in my picture and it prompted me to do some more searching. Apparently, what I saw was a glory!

Raisinbrain · 28/04/2019 07:21

I have seen the end of the rainbow in Sydney harbour

@Shipley A friend and I had a rainbow on our car bonnet too! It was amazing and 'drove with us' for ages, at least 2-3 minutes. It was really special. I'm sorry you lost your dog x
