To want a bidet / jet in my new bathroom

I am British but have family in Asia where it is more the norm not to rely on toilet paper and to use water to clean yourself after using the loo. I’ve seen jet sprays kind of like mini shower hoses by the toilet and even jets which come from in the toilet (less keen). Haven’t seen a proper bidet for years and not sure that’s up my street.

I find toilet paper inadequate and love a fresh clean feeling. I used the Andrex toilet wipes for a bit but have since been led to believe they are not very environmentally friendly so don’t buy them now.

I’d quite like something like the water jet by the toilet - just moved into new house and getting bathroom completely re done so could have whatever I want.

I do know someone who has this actually it she is older and from aforementioned Asian country.

Anyone else?

No idea, I don’t have one!

Shmithecat2 · 27/04/2019 16:34

We're in the ME and have bum guns 😂. Dh is obsessed with them, and wants them fitted into our bathroom when we finally repat.

AliceRR · 27/04/2019 16:56

My DH thinks it’s weird too but that won’t stop me getting one

He doesn’t have to use it (thought I’d rather he did) 😬😂

And to think that we once thought that indoor toilets were unhygienic!

Arnoldthecat · 27/04/2019 17:21

Im a big fan of the bidet and would fit one in any bathroom i have. The bum gun is known appropriately as the shattaf..

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_toilet_etiquette

Islamic toilet practice requires washing and not the use of paper. I tend to agree.

MereDintofPandiculation · 27/04/2019 17:55

I think cold water would be fine Think hard about that. This time of year, yes, but the cold water can get very cold in winter.

I’ve never used one but don’t fancy a bidet that you sit in You don't sit in a bidet, it's too small.

outsho · 27/04/2019 18:03

My friend has a bidet and it’s used to store toiletries Grin.

DarlingNikita · 27/04/2019 18:11

I had great fun with the bum guns at the airport in Dubai, however the spray goes everywhere and it was easier to get undressed whilst using the loo.
I am not sure "bum guns" comply with building regs in the UK.

Recommend shower toilets, I like the Duravit for style. Geberit are quite stylish and they are useful for older generation too.

I just put oak blob of Aloe Vera gel on some loo role before I start wiping. Baby lotion would work as well. Fine to flush. No extra plumbing. Soothing and cleaning as well. Smile

birdflyinghigh · 27/04/2019 19:13

A not oak!

birdflyinghigh · 27/04/2019 19:13

Roll! Ugh posted too soon!

OunceOfFlounce · 27/04/2019 19:16

...I'll take that as a yes.

Actually, this thread made me curious so I had a bit of a Google about UTIs. Link if anyone's interested: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/21058441/

Perhaps one of examples of women living in a world designed for men.

Snugglepiggy · 27/04/2019 19:46

Bidets are blooming brilliant. We have done up several houses and always put one in.I use paper if just a quick wee but in between showers and bathing they are a great way to freshen up,especially when I had horrendously heavy periods.I can't understand why so many people think they are weird.Obviously not every bathroom has room for one.

AliceRR · 27/04/2019 21:06

I obviously don’t know how a bidet works

Is a shower toilet one with the jets in the toilet?

Interesting @OunceofFlounce

I was just going to ask a similar question Alice. The only place I've seen bidets is in Spanish holiday apartments, but I've never used them.

Does the water come out like a tap and you sort of sponge bath your bits, or is it like the Bum Hose Experience where you blast yourself clean and then dry off? Do you undress to use a bidet?

When I first used the boat bum hose, I undressed because I was convinced everything was going to get soaked, but it turned out not to be the case.

nespressowoo · 27/04/2019 21:16

This thread 😂

Classic mumsnet 😁

My DH would love a bum gun, he has such a hairy arse. He will love this.

Nanamilly · 27/04/2019 21:24

You have to be careful to get the water pressure right or you’ll end up the loft the first time you use it.

AliceRR · 27/04/2019 21:26

So i Googled how to use a bidet

travel.stackexchange.com/questions/70827/ok-we-are-all-adults-here-so-what-is-a-bidet-for-and-how-do-i-use-it

I don’t think that’s what I want

OP posts:
TakeMe2Insanity · 27/04/2019 21:30

This thread 😂

We actually have one in each bathroom - the shower adjacent to toilet although bum gun sounds better!

You undo trousers/ dress as normal for going to loo then clean with the water and then dry with toilet paper. Simple.

cockadoodledooooo · 27/04/2019 21:33

I love them and always use them when they're available. Definitely have one, but not a cold one!

AliceRR · 27/04/2019 21:39

Yeah I think it’s the bum gun for me too

OP posts:
Cryalot2 · 27/04/2019 21:46

I have never used a bidet because I was never shown how.
I love the idea of the Gerbet but dh never and we do not have the best water pressure.
I have chronic ibs so use a lot of paper st times . Never would we flush wipes as they don't really flush.

Peachesandcream14 · 27/04/2019 21:56

We had a bidet in my childhood home before my parents redid the bathroom. I remember my mum coming in to find me sitting sideways on the loo with my feet in the bidet having a 'foot spa' Grin

A friend posted loads of videos of the spray and dry toilets they have in japan, one even had multicoloured LEDs which you could change. I would quite like one if I ever have my own home to do up.
