I don't have mlm friends so this was a surprise treat from one who's just started selling Body Shop products. Now, I like body shop and have fond memories of my teen years spraying white musk constantly, but magic cream that vanishes stretch marks? It's not a bloody rash Hmm

Anyway, it prompted me to ask, what other wild mlm claims have you seen recently?

So many JuicePlus and Bodyboost reps have tried to add me on social media. One of my friends was on JP but has changed to something that doesn’t appear to have a name? I don’t understand how the hell it works but she posts screenshots that she earns ‘six figures’ a week. Constantly signing up new girls too, which I presume is where she makes her money. Screenshot after screenshot of gloaty chats about all the money they’ve earned. It makes me sad for them as a PP said they’re most often vulnerable

easternlord · 28/04/2019 07:48

With Younique, there are maybe 2 women in the UK who are "mascara millionaires" (a few more in the States) - one lives quite near me. She is loaded, but it is shite makeup!

NeverTwerkNaked · 28/04/2019 07:53

I have an auto immune condition an someone tried to sell me Forever Living gloop by spouting a load of bogus scientific nonsense about how it could cure it! Worst bit - she was a nurse!! (Albeit not a very bright one! Most nurses I know are incredibly intelligent and wouldn’t get sucked in)

vampirethriller · 28/04/2019 08:55

Is Avon a MLM? I love Avon!

Aeroflotgirl · 28/04/2019 09:00

It is just a big con, I know someone who has fallen for it, and posts regular pictures of her with her epic Younique mascara. Occasionally she will post a video of her applying her Younique make up and is just makes you want to cringe, when she says that she is building her business. No you are not, Younique is not your brand, it is a global brand, and you are one of the many cogs in a big wheel.

I have a male collegue whose sister added me on Facebook, I don't know her, I have never met her, anyway I accepted, only to find her page is clogged up with Forever living, and the penny dropped that she was a Forever living rep, and just wanted me as bait. I quickly deleted her.

DontVisitMe · 28/04/2019 09:11

I have a friend who does that Cambridge Diet MLM. She's actually obsessed with her social media and recruiting her "team" so she can make money off them. She uses all the MLM buzzwords like "mumpreneur" and makes constant posts all the time about how amazing her life is, how she can spend time with her kids now, how much weight she has lost etc.

When you see her in real life where she isn't heavily filtered or angled to look slim, she's still about 20 stone, has serious food issues, three horrifically spoilt/naughty children and does not look like she is "loving life" at all.

Lolipop44 · 28/04/2019 09:15

My friends have started selling some bullshit "magic" coffee drink 1 cup a day and lost 4 stone in one Hmm it drives me mad they are constantly adding me into whatsapp groups trying to convince me to buy it. Thankfully i don't like coffee!!

Sickandsurprised2019 · 28/04/2019 09:31

If they make social media medicinal claims, screenshit and send to the MHRA. Or ask them if their company is aware they are making medicinal claims on their behalf which is not legal.

Though to be fair on the MHRA, the companies never leave a trail to show they told their reps to say this so it's harder to go after. However enough of them does show a pattern.

Ive been told marvellous morning sickness shakes....not thanks i already need to vomit. One friend was told it would cure infertility and acne.

DontVisitMe · 28/04/2019 09:47

The Cambridge plan reps always make claims about how it's NHS recommended and can cure diabetes. Is this true then? Surely they can't claim these things?

Sickandsurprised2019 · 28/04/2019 10:12

Unless something is a licenced medicine, and that includes licenced herbal medicines which are THRs in the UK, they cannot make medicinal claims.

They can use close words, say something cleanses or detoxifies but not treats.

If it's untrue and you have proof they have said it, report to the MHRA. Try this address and they will forward it on to the right person: [email protected]

NeverTwerk
I had a nurse trying to sell her crap 2 weeks after I’d had major surgery and struggled to take no for an answer. She had some sort of video marketing thing set up that I’d have needed to log in. No. I don’t want to commit to being awake at a time predetermined by you and work out how to access your sales pitch and pay for your mortgage. I’m disabled and can’t work! I also hate the way when you say Im ill (have ME / fibro) so don’t want to take the risk of buying their snake oil that the PA response is to check with a doctor first. As if a doctor would condone this crap.

Sickandsurprised2019 · 28/04/2019 10:15

Mummyoflittledragon did you report her to PALs? She is in a position of authority and using it to push her own agenda, thats is both a conflic and misconduct. She sounds te be effectively targeting her patients, vulnerable people.

GinisLife · 28/04/2019 10:16

@DontVisitMe There have been articles in newspapers to say Cambridge type diets can reverse diabetes. I'm on a FB group for Cambridge and lots of people have lost tons of weight and are no longer type 2 diabetic. Trouble is of course you can reduce your own diet to 800 calories a day without paying fortunes for their disgusting porridge and powdered "meals" - I've tried it, it's vile.

I will say Arbonne skincare and make up is lovely. Their lipsticks and mascara are brilliant. Yes I used to be an IC but I'm not any more as I couldn't sell or recruit but I continue to use the products because they are good.

Otterses · 28/04/2019 10:18

@mimibunz I can confirm first hand it's a huge issue within military communities. Stems from bigger overall issues, like employers being reluctant to hire military spouses due to perceived lack of commitment on their part (assuming they'll jack it in and move at any time), and lack of support helping families integrate into new communities, and of course, lack of family support with childcare making working outside of the home impossible for some. I'm the only working wife in my road, the rest do various MLM schemes. Every few days I get leaflets shoved through my door or 'party' invite in person. It's sad, and results in social isolation on both ends. The MLM bot pushes people away through their pushy sales tactics, and the non MLM bot ends up equally isolated by not participating, and knocks your self esteem because bizarrely, they only seem to want to be your friend so they can sell you something. Leaves everyone feeling shitty all round.

It's a huge barrier to making friendships for non MLM people too. We're moving next week, and I did the usual logging into apps like Mush to try to make some connections, and all I've had is people messaging me promoting Avon and Herbashite Hmm or trying to get me to join their 'team' and start my own business. Doing my head in. Obviously I appreciate that there are people outside military communities to be friends with, and I am, but I just wanted to give some insight into how bad the problem actually is.

Mummyoflittledragon · 28/04/2019 10:21

Sickandsurprised
Oh I see my post wasn’t clear. She wasn’t one of my nurses. She’s a mum from school. I told her I had had major surgery and she took 3 NO’s to eff off so I don’t think she did anything wrong. As far as I’m aware she was only selling beauty products, not the other mlm stuff.

DanFmDorking · 28/04/2019 10:55

Don't get caught up with Younique and Nu Skin.

OhMyDarling · 28/04/2019 11:13

My SIL is into Nuskin... Nu Skin, whatever it’s called.
She’s actually quite aggressive in her selling, I avoid spending time with her. She has a group of middle class 4x4 school mum friends who egg her on, who have spent a fortune on whizzy make up removing contraptions at over £200 a piece which demand £40 sachets of gloop each month... none of them look any different.
She claims her own skin has been transformed, doesnt need to wear make up any more etc but doesn’t reveal that she’s given up her 1 bottle of red per evening, stopped social smoking and started walking the dog every day.

Gotthetshirt23 · 28/04/2019 12:23

Have a social media friend into Nu Skin or instaglow etc
Constant photos and double figures hashtags on every post
And raffles !

MrsExpo · 28/04/2019 12:29

Keto coffee that can apparently get rid of lbs by just drinking one cup a day.

Yes, I get this all the time from a "friend" .... said friend used to work in IT before becoming a SHAM to her 2 young DCs, but now, apparently, she's a guru on all things to do with weight loss, human metabolism and related issues. Hmm

goose1964 · 28/04/2019 12:41

Their mantra is fake it until you make it. Most of the gushing comments from "customers" are from huns shilling the same product

Dollyparton3 · 28/04/2019 16:14

I used to have a friend who pushes Tropic. I told her that I can't put her overpriced slime on my face because I see a dermatologist for my melisma and she prescribed me medical strength Retinol cream to keep it under control.

Tropicbot's response was "but this is organic and natural, I'm sure it will get rid of it"

I had to bin her from my social media after she came to a barbecue at my house and pitched to all my other friends who were visiting. Then went through my Facebook contacts the following day and invited them all to her Tropic selling page.

When I confronted her about it she lied to me and said they all approached her because they were interested in hearing all about Susie Ma's "ethical" business.

Ethics my arse, her business model preys on the vulnerable and ruins women's support network up and down the country.

ambereeree · 28/04/2019 21:05

Did anybody watch the bbc doc on mlm selling. They aggressively target the vulnerable. Really sad.

Pk37 · 28/04/2019 21:34

My neighbor used to sell Arbonne and she had a white Mercedes which she told our other neighbours was because of selling their crap.
I thought she was making it up but seems not!

ambereeree · 28/04/2019 21:42

Is Amway mlm? I have a friend always banging on about it.
