I take great issue with your statement. He is most certainly not generally regarded as a bit of a tosser anywhere.
He is generally regarded - everywhere - as an absolute tosser, tossiest tosser that ever tossed.

Can I ask - why is he so hated? I’m not a fan but it seems as soon as he was appointed journos were mercilessly taking the piss and people were talking about how much they hated him. Not saying it’s not deserved, but I don’t think I fully understand why.

Because he’s - allegedly - a war-mongering nutter completely unequal to the post. Journos disliked and distrusted him already because of his allegedly very nasty, underhand tactics during his time as chief whip.
His reaction to these allegations appear to reinforce that assessment of his character. Anyone who protests that the PM ought to have his back purely on the basis that he’d dug her out of a couple of holes (ie I scratched her back, she should scratch mine) should never have been given a position of such huge importance and responsibility as Defence. Russia should just shut up and go away? We’re going to send our big, shiny aircraft carrier (that doesn’t have any aircraft yet😂) to the South China Sea to show them who’s boss? Colleagues who call him Private Pike (you know, that “stupid boy” 🙄
