To have shouted at the person who walked out in front of me?

Biancadelrioisback · 26/04/2019 18:23

I know I was really, but why do people do this?!
People who walked onto the road in without looking properly, or people who see you driving on the road or reversing out of a space and decide to walk there anyways? I've had to slam on my breaks so many times recently and today was the straw that broke the camels back.
Driving down the main street in my town and a lady with a young boy (around 8 maybe?) walk out in front of me. She clearly saw me, I saw her look at me, she just walked out with her hand raised as if to say thanks. I had to slam my breaks on so the stuff on the passenger seat fell into the footwell. There are crossings on the road for pedestrians so no need to walk out where she did. The child didn't event acknowledge my car, was just chatting away to his mum/the lady.
I had the window down anyways and I yelled out that she needs to look before crossing the road rather than just expecting cars to stop. She yelled back at me to fuck off but I drove off so no idea what followed. So frustrating!

BMW

Someone walking is not lazy, they are exercising

wintertravel1980 · 26/04/2019 21:11

Of course, shouting may help if it gets reckless pedestrians to think. When I was heavily pregnant, I was stupid enough to step on a road in front of a van. I was too pre-occupied in my happy thoughts and forgot to turn my head and look right. The van driver shouted at he. He was right. I was wrong. Since that day I have been much more careful when crossing roads.

Impatienceismyvirtue · 26/04/2019 21:12

IvyKaty44 - the point you’re making is valid. There are lots of careless drivers on the road which is really scary for pedestrians. That doesn’t take away from there being lots of careless pedestrians as well, which is what the OP is talking about. It’s still scary for drivers even though they won’t be the ones hurt - imagine having to live with unavoidably hitting someone who just wasn’t paying attention! I’d have shouted too - it might get the point across and the pedestrian might take more care next time.

Biancadelrioisback · 26/04/2019 21:16

I don't think I should have shouted. I'm annoyed at myself for that. Especially in front of the child. I'm actually really annoyed at myself for that.

Someone walking is not lazy, they are exercising

Someone not walking an extra few feet to use a pedestrian crossing is both lazy AND stupid - and if they walked that extra few feet to cross at the appropriate safe place they would be getting even more exercise, wouldn't they!

BMW6 · 26/04/2019 21:20

But hell, I AM a pedestrian, so WTF do I know? Hmm

callmeadoctor · 26/04/2019 21:22

Next time don't engage, just blast your horn!

Vulpine · 26/04/2019 21:24

Where I live it seems pretty much everyone jay walks. You just get used to it. I'm not sure thst all you angry drivers have never jay walked!

BMW6 · 26/04/2019 21:25

OP don't feel bad about shouting - it's a natural shock reaction and you may have caused them to think in future. They were entirely at fault - not you.

Wholetthekidsout · 26/04/2019 21:28

Yanbu. My dh does this and sniggers me as I'm cautious Carol and have to walk further to cross at a proper crossing. I mean, unless it's a mile or something. Otherwise pedestrian should wait not stick their hand out like they own the road.

AlexaAmbidextra · 26/04/2019 21:34

Angry people don't make great drivers

We get it Vulpine. In your world pedestrians are never, ever at fault and the driver is always in the wrong.

OP, many MNers hate motorists as much as they hate step-mums. You won’t get a fair hearing on here. 🙄

ivykaty44 · 26/04/2019 21:46

they would be getting even more exercise, wouldn't they!

They are already getting more exercise

ivykaty44 · 26/04/2019 21:48

Next time don't engage, just blast your horn!

The actions of an angry person - not someone who should be driving a machine that can easily kill

adaline · 26/04/2019 21:58

Just because cars are more dangerous than pedestrians, doesn't mean pedestrians don't have a duty to be careful and look before they cross the street.

Don't schools teach the Tufty Club code anymore? So many people just wander across roads without stopping to check it's safe!

Of course drivers have a duty to be careful and stop, but that doesn't mean pedestrians can just wander out in the road whenever they feel like it!

ivykaty44 · 26/04/2019 22:05

Don't schools teach the Tufty Club code anymore?

They don’t need to as everyone goes in the car everywhere, pedestrians are diminishing in numbers at a rapid rate

BMW6 · 26/04/2019 22:10

pedestrians are diminishing in numbers at a rapid rate

indeed, because they are jaywalking.....

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 26/04/2019 22:14

I’m not lazy just because I drive a car. I live three miles out of town with a crap bus service. I’m not walking along a 60mph road with no footpaths. I do however walk about five miles a day to school with the dcs and back and taking the dog for a walk.

Biancadelrioisback · 26/04/2019 22:18

No ivy many people don't have the luxury of being able to walk everywhere. People are commuting further because despite what many think, jobs are not easy to come by. You can't always get your child into a school close by or in the same general direction as your work. Your local shops have closed down so you need to go further afield to get your shopping. You've been visiting a relative. Your job requires driving. Some people have disabilities which mean they can't walk far. There are many, many reasons people drive. Yes some are lazy, but not everyone.
Stop trying to make this into something it isnt.

ivykaty44 · 26/04/2019 22:49

It’s now a luxury to walk, there are many that can’t even afford driving lessons let alone a car or the fuel to go in it.

ivykaty44 · 26/04/2019 23:04

BMW
ï‚· The average number of walking trips has fallen significantly over time. The NTS shows a 30 per cent decrease from 292 trips per person per year in 1995/97 to 203 trips in 2013.

Around 75% of trips are under 5 miles with 25% under 1 mile and 35% of trips between 1-2 miles

MidniteScribbler · 26/04/2019 23:10

Sometimes it's hard to find a break when you're a pedestrian. If more drivers acknowledged the fact that there are hardly any crossings & it's nice to let people out...

As a parent, who is trying to teach my son road safety, I do NOT want you stopping for me to cross, anywhere other than a pedestrian crossing. It is dangerous for young children to get into the habit of assuming that cars are going to stop. They need to learn that they have to wait for a gap, regardless of how long they are waiting.

BMW6 · 26/04/2019 23:18

It’s now a luxury to walk
WTF do you mean by that ridiculous remark! Have you been at the blue smarties?

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 26/04/2019 23:21

You know what? I think shouting does help in these matters.

If you're the type to see a car approaching and still saunter out in front of them, with a child no less, then maybe you do need a bollocking to make you think twice next time. And having a strong emotional reaction, whether that's anger or upset, doesn't mean you shouldn't be driving Hmm. It means something has happened that upset you. Similarly, if your kid had a near miss running into the road.

SlightAggrandising · 26/04/2019 23:21

@MidniteScribbler as a grown up trying to get to work, I don't give a fuck what you're trying to teach your child. HTH

ivykaty44 · 26/04/2019 23:22

BMD there are 25% of households without a car in the uk - tell them it’s a luxury to walk and not have a car
