To have shouted at the person who walked out in front of me?

I know I was really, but why do people do this?!
People who walked onto the road in without looking properly, or people who see you driving on the road or reversing out of a space and decide to walk there anyways? I've had to slam on my breaks so many times recently and today was the straw that broke the camels back.
Driving down the main street in my town and a lady with a young boy (around 8 maybe?) walk out in front of me. She clearly saw me, I saw her look at me, she just walked out with her hand raised as if to say thanks. I had to slam my breaks on so the stuff on the passenger seat fell into the footwell. There are crossings on the road for pedestrians so no need to walk out where she did. The child didn't event acknowledge my car, was just chatting away to his mum/the lady.
I had the window down anyways and I yelled out that she needs to look before crossing the road rather than just expecting cars to stop. She yelled back at me to fuck off but I drove off so no idea what followed. So frustrating!

Lazy pedestrians don't kill, angry car drivers do

ivykaty44 · 26/04/2019 20:28

Indigospritiz

Horses, pedestrians have a right to be on the road whereas drivers are their by licence - which can be withdrawn

Vulpine · 26/04/2019 20:31

Indigo - so your anecdote about one horse makes you question that motor vehicles rule our roads Hmm

Impatienceismyvirtue · 26/04/2019 20:32

Vulpine, you must be one of the pedestrians the OP describes. You’re coming across as blinkered, argumentative and unreasonable

Biancadelrioisback · 26/04/2019 20:33

Jelly, it upset me. I was upset that someone did that and that I could have hit and hurt 2 people, one of them being a child. I was being careful, that is how I didn't hit them. Of course I'm annoyed. How can people just do that? How can people not care? Why would you do that? I am a pedestrian when I'm not driving and I would never walk out in front of a car or behind a reversing car. They teach that in primary school!

@vulpine
With all due respect, shouting may have helped, as maybe next time the woman will think about what she is doing.
It’s all very well for people to assume that can step out in front of a car, but they are assuming the driver is paying attention, of course they should be paying attention, but what is they are not, what if the idiot is looking at their phone, or changing their sat nag. A driver should absolutely not be doing that, bit we all know that people do this, and then it’s game over.

Shenanagins · 26/04/2019 20:35

OP yanbu to be annoyed especially as she had a child so should be even more vigilant. That said yabu to get annoyed over the little wave, for some completely inexplicable reason I walked out onto a road yesterday without even checking and thankfully the car saw me and I gave a wave to apologise. They would have been quite right to be angry with my stupidity.

crazycatgal · 26/04/2019 20:36

Nobody seems to check the road properly before they step out. I was turning into my road earlier from the main road and had to stop abruptly because a car on the other side had flashed a woman across and she stepped out with her pram. Even if someone flashes you across you need to look and check that it is safe to cross in all directions.

ivykaty44 · 26/04/2019 20:38

Inpatientsmyvirtue and you’re coming across as an angry driver who could kill - would you be able to live with yourself if you did?

Impatienceismyvirtue · 26/04/2019 20:44

@ivykaty44 I’m in no way an angry driver; I don’t drive at all Grin
I am, however, a careful pedestrian who doesn’t feel an entitlement to wander out in front of cars with only my hand up as protection! The OP said there were plenty of crossings available. Even if there weren’t, you wait until the road is clear before you cross! That’s basic safety and common sense.

Vulpine · 26/04/2019 20:44

Its happened to me as a driver and many times as a cyclist. But I just don't see the point of shouting at people

GabsAlot · 26/04/2019 20:45

youre right @crazycatgal actually your nt meant to flash anyone to cross it states it in the highway code

ivykaty44 · 26/04/2019 20:49

Thank goodness for that, as being angry isn’t great for drivers - they already kill 5 every day in the uk

ivykaty44 · 26/04/2019 20:52

Many many drivers ignore this rule from the Highway Code- I’ve even heard drivers toot pedestrians already crossing

watch out for pedestrians crossing a road into which you are turning - if they have started to cross they have priority, so give way

Ihatehashtags · 26/04/2019 20:53

Why are t they using pedestrian crossings? They are everywhere!! Too lazy to walk another 5netrrs probably

MereDintofPandiculation · 26/04/2019 20:54

too lazy to walk to the crossing 20m-100m away If the crossing's 100m away, then walking to it and back is an extra 200m. Do this 5 times in your journey, and that's an extra kilometre.

crazycatgal · 26/04/2019 20:55

@ivykaty44 In my case I had already started to turn and she stepped out. I always check a road before I turn into it.

ivykaty44 · 26/04/2019 20:57

It’s great when someone walking gets called lazy... what does that make the person sat on a chair using only their feet in a car?

Tinkobell · 26/04/2019 20:59

YANBU. A friend of mine killed someone who just randomly stepped into the road a few years back. They just bounced over the car and died. He went through a whole Police investigation and was cleared on any wrong doing. The trauma of the incident and that death is something that he will take to the grave. You'd never get over it. Shouting was the right thing to do.

BMW6 · 26/04/2019 20:59

YANBU OP, I am a pedestrian and I see it loads. Why do they do it? Simple. They are stupid.

Stefoscope · 26/04/2019 21:00

I've noticed people in general pay less attention to their surroundings than a few years ago (too preoccupied with their phones). Even as a pedestrian I get frustrated by the amount of other pedestrians who nearly bump or bump into me on a daily basis as I'm walking through the city centre. All because they're too busy texting and walking. I dislike cars stopping and waving me across as a pedestrian, as often they haven't noticed a car coming in the opposite direction so it's not safe to cross and they just end up holding up other cars.

BMW6 · 26/04/2019 21:04

It’s great when someone walking gets called lazy... what does that make the person sat on a chair using only their feet in a car?

I rather thought that the point being made was that it IS lazy not to walk to the pedestrian crossing?

Acis · 26/04/2019 21:06

I literally say in my OP that there are crossings

But then, you literally say you used breaks to stop your car.

ivykaty44 · 26/04/2019 21:07

I walk just a mile and a half to work on occasions and each time I see drivers texting on their phones - completely oblivious to their surroundings.

I know a few cyclists that run cameras and report drivers doing this on the police website

Impatienceismyvirtue · 26/04/2019 21:07

Oh, there’s the spelling and grammar nazi! That didn’t take long. Biscuit
