And bloody hell have I tried Sad

I wish more than anything I had a savoury tooth rather than a sweet one!

ChrisPrattAteMyHomework · 25/04/2019 22:42

Nope

I can't quit it either.

The headaches for starters... :(

noworklifebalance · 25/04/2019 22:46

I love sugar but have gone teetotal (almost).
6 weeks now without sugar except when we went out for dinner a couple of times on holiday & I had a delicious chocolate mousse, a gin cocktail & red wine.

My weight has gone down & my skin has cleared up.

My hope is that this will be a lifestyle change - puddings, booze only when out & not picking up a chocolate bar on the way home, drinking wine on the sofa, biscuits with my tea etc.
I honestly don't miss it.

birdsandroses · 25/04/2019 22:50

I managed 3 weeks without sugar apart from fruit recently. It was hell and my craving for it didn’t abate as promised. I too wish I preferred savoury to sweet. Sugar is just empty calories but I love it so!

Constance1234 · 25/04/2019 22:50

I thought that too OP, until I started the 5:2 way of eating. It kind of resets your appetite and taste buds I found.

MingeOnFire · 25/04/2019 22:51

I'm in my 40s and have battled it my whole life, and yes I feel it's impossible now for me. I truly believe it's the hardest thing to give up. I gave up booze for several years which wasn't easy but was doable, sugar..... Tried and tried again but failed every time.

The problem is that it is everywhere. Literally everywhere

MingeOnFire · 25/04/2019 22:52

I've tried 5:2 and failed at that too

FrenchBoule · 25/04/2019 22:54

YABU. It is possible but extremely difficult like stopping smoking. I was dizzy for a week and climbing the walls after giving up, it took my body a week to adjust.

PhillipeFellope · 25/04/2019 22:54

I'm six weeks or so in and really feeling the benefit. My skin, hair, nails look and feel better. I'm not craving the crap anymore, sweet or salty.

MoniqueTonique · 25/04/2019 22:56

MingeOnFire snap. Tried everything, cannot beat it. Also in my 40s. I honestly think you'd have to put me on a desert island with nothing but water and basic protein/green veg. Maybe then I'd get through the withdrawal stage and accept it, but then I'd enter the real world again with all its temptations....Hmm

Fatted · 25/04/2019 23:00

Here's something to think about. Whenever I go on a 'diet' I crave sugary foods. Yet whenever I'm eating whatever I want whenever I want, I don't actually ever want sweets or chocolate.

I've come to the conclusion it's not eating enough or regularly enough to stop me feeling hungry that makes me crave the quickest way humanly possible of getting some calories into myself.

Try eating filling, nutritious and healthy meals and snacks, without limiting your portions for a while and see how you get on.

SweetestSugar · 25/04/2019 23:01

How did you manage it @FrenchBoule and how long have you stayed away?

OP posts:
CarolSpatula · 25/04/2019 23:05

Have you read the I Quit Sugar book by Sarah Wilson? I managed to quit (temporarily Blush) using that. But one piece of chocolate and I’m back to square one 😭

Plant2628 · 25/04/2019 23:08

Trying to quit chocolate at the moment too after a root canal. Can't face (or pay for!) another....so hard. I'm addicted. I've been eating dark chocolate instead - less sugar, not as good but better than none!

SweetestSugar · 25/04/2019 23:09

"Try eating filling, nutritious and healthy meals and snacks, without limiting your portions for a while and see how you get on."

Oh, I do, I am, I have been! This is exactly what I do all day long.

Then come evening I can't stay away from the sugar, I have even been known to bake a bloody cake at 11pm in order to have something sweet. Hmm

RuggyPeg · 25/04/2019 23:14

I recently lasted all of 1.5 days off the sugar .

reasonsforwaiting · 25/04/2019 23:14

Gave up sweet stuff for Lent, and have lost the taste for sugar. Skin clearer, lost several pounds in weight, feel much more energetic, plus non sweet food tastes sooo much better - all unexpected positive effects.

It was tough for almost 3 weeks, then the sugar cravings went.... If I can do this, anyone can!

FrenchBoule · 25/04/2019 23:17

@Sweetest I can’t remember exactly.I’ve never had sweet tooth but that changed at the end of pregnancy and I put 4st on.
I’m devil for carbs-crisps,bread and potatoes in any form.
It came to the point that I couldn’t lift myself off the flor without propping up,that was a shock as I was always quite fit.
I decided to do something. All hcps told me to forget about diets because I was breastfeeding.
I stopped eating all processed foods including confectionery, vastly reduced bread and potato intake. When I felt a pang of “snacktime” I ate some fruit or nuts.
Weight started shifting. I lost most of it and kept it off.
I came back to eating some crap- I want a treat now and again but when my trousers start feeling a bit tight it’s time to adjust my eating habits again.
Very hard to do

AwkwardPaws27 · 25/04/2019 23:21

I thought that was just me Blush

cherubby · 25/04/2019 23:27

I managed the last two days. Currently sat here with an Easter egg. Oh the shame

DizzyPhillips · 26/04/2019 00:15

I don’t even know how you would begin to give up sugar. Like what the fuck do you eat?!

Ihatehashtags · 26/04/2019 05:44

It is possible. I’m doing keto. I felt horrendous for about 1 1/2 weeks. Sweats, headaches, so tired etc. now I feel great! My weight loss is slow but I feel sooooo much better for eating no/low carbs

Laughsandgiggles · 26/04/2019 06:06

I'm 4 months sugar free and very surprised how easy it has been this time.
I had a major sweet tooth and lived on chocolate, sweets and red bull along with processed food.
Just decided enough was enough at the start of the year and have been very determined.
I'm nearly 3 stone down and feel so so much better.
I'm doing low carbs/ Keto as I knew it's the carbs that make me crave the sweet stuff. I knew it had to be 'all or nothing' and I had to be in the right mind frame. I've tried a few times before and failed but this time it's been easy.
Get your head in the right place and DO IT!! You'll be amazed how good 'boring' food tastes when you're not eating all the sugary stuff!!

k1233 · 26/04/2019 06:09

Sweet addict here too. Things I find that help:

  • if you crave sugar, eat a handful of raw almonds. I thought this would fail for sure, but it actually works
  • after the almonds, if you still feel like sugar, go for a minimum 30 minute brisk walk
  • after the walk, if you still feel like sugar, brush your teeth
  • if all that fails you can have something sweet
SweetestSugar · 26/04/2019 07:09

I am so envious of your willpower @Laughsandgiggles!

This is absolutely true and exactly the same for me.
Cold turkey is the only want until it becomes a way of life.
