And bloody hell have I tried Sad

I wish more than anything I had a savoury tooth rather than a sweet one!

I try and build my diet around fruit and veg, and crowd out the sugar - sleep deprivation is always my problem for sugar, it’s often tiredness driving the cravings. I do think it’s had a bad effect on my health.

YANBU.
It’s not hard to give it up for a while but the problem is whether or not it’s your coping mechanism for difficult times. If it is then... I’ve also been struggling with it for 50 years. And yes, it’s everywhere.

thelist · 26/04/2019 07:37

I’m addicted to sugar and I binge eat. I’ve genuinely managed to give it up doing whole 30. I think it’s being able to eat natural fats/sugars that’s eliminated the craving. I feel so much better not eating it, more energy and my skin is a totally different texture. I would really reccomend looking into whole 30, it’s only for 30 days and all the info is available for free.

I found Michael Mosley's The Blood Sugar diet very useful for this.

Laughsandgiggles · 26/04/2019 07:44

@SweetestSugar I have tried and failed numerous times before.
I have/had very particular reasons for doing it this time (wanting to fit into a specific item of clothing for a competition being one of them - nearly there!) Its definitely helped me stay focused but to be honest I'm still not quite sure how I've managed it this time.

SweetestSugar · 26/04/2019 14:01

I've been thinking about it this morning and I think it's going to have to be 'all or nothing' - for example the usual thing about "Oh you can still have 85% dark chocolate" is just not that helpful for me.

I am going to need an absolute willpower of steel!!!

I'm cutting out all "obvious" sugar sweets, cakes.
,biscuits chocolate, puddings etc but keeping my weekly wine..baby steps Wink

LongWalkShortPlank · 26/04/2019 14:08

It takes 2 weeks to break the habit. I've been eating keto since January and don't even think about it anymore. I also eat a much more varied range of foods.

NabooThatsWho · 26/04/2019 14:14

I tried doing it but I spent 90% of my day thinking about sugar. If I ate anything sugary I felt guilty which made me binge more.
I just try to eat a balanced diet now, and yes that includes sugar. But I don’t binge or feel guilty. I think it’s healthier to eat this way.

Trying to restrict any food group makes me want it even more and makes my eating become a bit disordered and obsessive.

Waveysnail · 26/04/2019 14:16

I did it for a month - February as it was shorter. It really made a difference to taste buds and not too bad as I knew it was only a month

wheresmymojo · 26/04/2019 14:46

I think different things work for different people.

Some feel better going cold turkey. I respond better to small changes.

So week one...I stopped buying chocolate and cake but could eat dessert if out.

Week two...I cut down to the 1/2 teaspoon sugar in hot drinks.

Week three...cut down to 1/4 teaspoon sugar.

Etc, etc.

wheresmymojo · 26/04/2019 14:48

I don't give up carbs though...I just try and switch to whole meal.

The keto/high protein diets don't suit me at all. I have two close friends who've really upset the balance of their bodies by doing keto....one ended up with hormonal issues and the other with ongoing serious kidney issues.

wheresmymojo · 26/04/2019 14:51

I'm exactly the same as Naboo, I have a history of disordered eating and going on a full restriction just triggers my eating disorders (either I get obsessed and start towards anorexia or I start binge eating).

Plus I have bipolar disorder and if I make sudden changes to carbs and sugar it triggers low moods.

ThatCurlyGirl · 26/04/2019 16:14

Hardest thing I've EVER had to quit!! And if you know my younger years that says a lot! Was warned how much of a risk it is for epileptics and taken it seriously since then. Bloody hell they've got us HOOKED!!! Good luck -!wish I had some good advice but I've only been able to coz I'm more scared of my seizures than I am desperate for sweets.

I would happily pour a pack of nerd candies into my gob right now. Both flavours. Like an animal. I hope I dream about that later.

What is my life.

SweetestSugar · 26/04/2019 21:22

The sugar is calling me and has been for the last thirty minutes. My mouth is actually watering, what's all that about?!?

bridgetreilly · 26/04/2019 21:26

I actually think it's not that hard BUT...

  1. You have to quit all carbs. Any carbs will give you cravings for more carbs, i.e. sugar. So you have to also stop bread, potatoes, rice, pasta etc.
  1. You have to do it properly for at least a month. The first 2-3 days will be hard but after that the cravings disappear and after a month your sweet tooth will have gone.
latenightcakes · 26/04/2019 21:50

Managed 1 week. Planned to eat lots of super veggie yummy salads etc. which were delish but took a long time to prep - cooking grains, roasting squash, blitzing nuts into herbs for dressings, making soup, even preparing mini egg omlettes....of course my 6 yr old doesn’t want to eat that stuff so then you have to prep two lots of foods for the week... not ideal. Actually the cold turkey approach to giving it up was easier than ‘I’ll just have the occasional piece of dark chocolate’. I did have a flatter tummy after the week and more energy after the headaches subsided. BUT, I adore Cake and bakery, plus Easter came along and I gave up...guess I’ll try again, eventually!
