To ask how often you change your baby’s nappy?

With my eldest I’m sure I was changing him constantly. Second baby, often reoccupied with the toddler, I’m aware it’s much less frequently. So made me think- how often are most people changing baby nappies?

DD is 5 weeks and there are no issues with nappy rash. She is changed immediately if she poo’s, and then probably every 2 hours or so as a freshen up. Toddler is again immediately following a poo but I do it whenever it seems to be heading down to his knees as he hates it being done!

Every two hours with newborns. Every three or so with older babies. We mainly use reusables though and I think they need to be changed more frequently.

Anerak · 25/04/2019 14:38

When it's dirty

There's a joke about this....First child changed regularly, second child changed when absolutely needed and third child when they bring you a clean nappy.... that's sort of how it was for me. All 3 are fine. As long as there is no nappy rash and you do it after a poo then all is good.

When DS was that age we were getting through 12-14 nappies a day, so it must have been about every two hours. He's 9 months now and it's normally first thing, before each of his two naps, and then bed, with at least one extra change for poo somewhere in there - so more like every 3/4 hours

Astrid0208 · 25/04/2019 14:41

About 10 times a day as a newborn. 5 or 6 now she's 9 months.

BelulahBlanca · 25/04/2019 14:42

Every 2 hours

Rememberallball · 25/04/2019 14:42

When it needs it is going to be my mantra!!

I’m changing my 6 week old before every feed and after any poo. With my first I changed it as soon as there was any wee in the nappy at all so I’m definitely doing it less frequently. I think I might have even woken up my first to do changes for a wee. That has not happened this time unless a poo.

Biolama · 25/04/2019 14:46

When newborn I would check every hour or so and whenever the little indicator turned blue. After a few months probably every 2-3 hours if I didn’t smell poo. After 1 maybe 5-6ish times a day on average. First thing, before lunch, after nap, before tea and before bed then 1-2 for poos

Fatted · 25/04/2019 14:49

Before a feed and after a poo. Although my boys were both 'posh poopers' and waited for a clean nappy to drop their arses in.

usernotfound0000 · 25/04/2019 14:54

Either before or after a feed, or if she's pooed. She's 6 months so I guess that's probably every 3-4 hours unless it feels like it needs doing sooner. I would still do before/after feeds when was newborn so probably was more like every 2 hours.

ABG0 · 25/04/2019 15:10

My Mum's advice was to change after a feed not before. I followed it and found my DD pooed most often just after a feed. I used terry nappies and I'm sure I saved a lot of washing this way.

NewAccount270219 · 25/04/2019 15:23

I would second the advice to change after not before a poo, though I'm sure it depends on your baby. DS used to poo immediately every time he was fed for the first 12 weeks, so if I'd changed him before he'd have needed so many more changes.

He was born in last summer's heatwave, so spent a lot of time in just his nappy as a newborn. We soon realised that if you change the indicator every time it goes blue you'd be doing it every 10 minutes sometimes. I'm sure those indicators are a (pretty clever and effective) scam to sell more nappies.

tor8181 · 25/04/2019 20:01

mines nearly 9 so years ago but i remember very often as he was on 11 oz from birth and 4 pints a day from 8 months

we did cloth nappies from birth and he was also way bigger than his age(8lb 10 and 26 inches born)so was in 2-3 sizes bigger than hid age in months

he toilet trained(to big for a potty)at 2 y 6 months as he got to big for any type of nappies

even now he pees a lot and poos a few times a day

BethanyGilbert · 25/04/2019 20:08

I’ve always done DD every 2 hours and she has very rarely had nappy rash. I so wonder if now she is 2 if it it excessive.

LittleSprite · 25/04/2019 21:05

Disposable nappies are wasteful enough already without changing them every two hours (beyond the very initial weeks) or as soon as the blue line appears. Madness.

keepingbees · 26/04/2019 12:49

Mine always fed roughly every 3 hours from memory, so I always changed them after every feed, always straight after a poo and first thing in the morning when they woke up.
Toddler was as and when they pooped or started looking soggy!

Minai · 26/04/2019 13:17

4 month old is usually changed after every feed (unless he has pooed) so roughly every 3-3.5 hours.

23 month old is changed first thing, before his 1pm nap, then again about 4 and just before bed (unless has pooed at any point)

I remember changing ds1 unnecessarily often when he was small but the amount I change them now is fine. Neither of them has ever had nappy rash

ethelfleda · 26/04/2019 13:21

I remember when DS started nursery at 12months old and they changed him every 2 hours! I was shocked! It was more like 4 when I had him at home! But I always gave him a good 20 mins in the morning with no nappy on at all, he has never ever had nappy rash.

TheTrollFairy · 26/04/2019 13:22

I would say it’s excessive at 2. There bladder control at this age is getting better (and a lot of kids are potty trained at about 2.5).
Unless DD poo’d I think I changed her every 4-5 hours at this age

NotMyPuppy · 26/04/2019 13:26

Have to say I agree.

Dermymc · 26/04/2019 13:28

What have I just read, people change a 2yos nappy every 2 hours Shock

Forget David Attenborough going after plastic waste, he needs to sort out nappy over usage. That is one of the most wasteful things I've ever heard of. I bet most times she hasn't even weed!

I used cloth, changed every 3-4 hours to start with, gradually increased but also did a lot of nappy free time and also a bit of EC to get poos on the potty from about 1.

ShabbyAbby · 26/04/2019 13:28

8-10 changes with a new born. About 4-5 changes a day in a toddler. With the changes reducing steadily over that time.

Charlottejade89 · 26/04/2019 13:34

between 8-10 times a day as newborn, shes 9 months old now and I change her between 4-6 times a day, mainly because she likes to poo in stages (sometimes 3 times in one morning)

outsho · 26/04/2019 13:55

I use reusable nappies. I felt like I was constantly changing DS for the first 6-8 weeks because he seemed to do tiny poos all of the time. He’s EBF so he just ended up stopping pooing all together for 6/7 day stretches and since then I only change him every 2-3 hours.
