Does a bank assistant really need to know my employment status when requesting a postal bank statement ?

So been in the bank this morning to request a postal statement as I want it for ID

Anyway she asked me if I’m still a homemaker?
I said well I’m doing voluntary work for a charity now but just keep it on there as homemaker incase of any changes

Then when she selected he time period to print off, so could obviously see my bank details, said oh you’ve got a lot of money for a home maker

Which was a bit cheeky and nosey

But really I can’t see why she asked what my employment status is just to post me a statement

Of course I could understand her asking that if I was apply for a mortgage or something

But you assumed from the OP that the woman was bitchy and sneering.

Literally no-one else thought that.

As someone who worked in that role, to jump to that conclusion, indicates that it must be pretty common, I'd have thought. As it's an odd leap to make, no-one else made it in this giant long thread.

Don't you like your MIL? Why use her name as one that no-one gives a shit about?

Why not say what you meant, the people in the bank don't give a shit about how much you earn, xenia.

You are trying to misdirect by saying I have said things I have not. Not once have I said you laughed at people in financial difficulty. If I implied it that was not my intention. I've stated that multiple times.

What does seem clear is that, in your experience, it is common for counter people to be "bitchy", " sneering" and to laugh at people in financial difficulty, behind their backs. To the point that it's the first thing you assume when you read the OP. Rather than what everyone else assumed, which was that she was nosey, or going to try and flog op something.

I think that's an awful picture to paint. But then, maybe it is true.

I have genuinely never worked in a place where that sort of behaviour was common / and I've had quite a lot of jobs esp when younger. I can only think of one time where something similar happened and it was a bunch of teens in back office role before data protection was as strict as these days. Everyone condemned it and it didn't happen again. That's in my whole working life.
