Does a bank assistant really need to know my employment status when requesting a postal bank statement ?

Lardlizard · 25/04/2019 13:35

So been in the bank this morning to request a postal statement as I want it for ID

Anyway she asked me if I’m still a homemaker?
I said well I’m doing voluntary work for a charity now but just keep it on there as homemaker incase of any changes

Then when she selected he time period to print off, so could obviously see my bank details, said oh you’ve got a lot of money for a home maker

Which was a bit cheeky and nosey

But really I can’t see why she asked what my employment status is just to post me a statement

Of course I could understand her asking that if I was apply for a mortgage or something

You obviously were acting shifty Wink

Wouldn’t sweat this one, just AML checks

Poloshot · 25/04/2019 21:06

Tell her to mind her own business and she'll then either shut up or explain why she needs to know

Smotheroffive · 25/04/2019 21:16

Challenge it, and call it out.

My bank has no idea my personal details beyond address!

Her comments were rude and inappropriate not to say unprofessional.

If she felt, on seeing your account that something was off, then that should be a search conducted professionally with letter requesting info and notification of some sort of further info requirements.

Asking Jo bloggs at the counter what they do, and making off comments, isn't going to get to the bottom of anything.

Every cf seems to have to know the ins and outs of a DA now! Even energy companies, the dix

ny20005 · 25/04/2019 21:36

@Smotheroffive if I worked in a branch & you were that cheeky to me asking questions that's part of my job, I might flag your account for a full investigation lol

@Lardlizard it's called know your customer - all financial institutions have to ask this information & it needs to be updated regularly. If she accessed your account to order a statement, it may have come up on screen that it's not been updated & she checked with you while you were in.

Smotheroffive · 25/04/2019 21:38

...and I might complain and get my account shut down and .oved to somewhere more respectful, lols!

Smotheroffive · 25/04/2019 21:40

BTW its not 'cheeky' or somehow worthy of vitriol and revenge to challenge what people are asking questions for is it Confused

happyhillock · 25/04/2019 21:47

I went into my bank to withdraw a fair bit of money, the cashier asked me what i wanted it for, i said my money, my business

ny20005 · 25/04/2019 22:01

@Smotheroffive 😂 I'd help you close your account

ifpossible · 25/04/2019 22:06

It’s to see what they can sell you. I complained to Halifax because they coo’d over my baby anytime I was in then always raised the subject of life insurance & when I said no thanks my baby all of a sudden became invisible & ceased to exist & it was basically you can piss off now. Having worked in a similar role - there are ways of approaching customers and that as far as I was concerned was bang out of order.

claybakefan · 25/04/2019 22:09

A home maker 🤣

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 25/04/2019 22:16

It might have been for sales but had I been in their shoes I would have wanted to know where the large balance in your account came from if you were a home maker. Probably perfectly legitimate or you could be money laundering or be holding the proceeds of crime. It's our job to know.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 25/04/2019 22:18

But if you are suspicious would you say OOOHHHH You've got a lot of money!!!! to the suspect?

Well I wouldn’t! Grin but I’ve seen others be completely tactless when doing their “investigations”

Sunlov · 25/04/2019 22:22

My money's on her being nosey!

Sunlov · 25/04/2019 22:22

My money is on her being nosey.

moosesormeece · 25/04/2019 22:23

I'm sure my bank don't know what I do for a living. I was a student when I opened my account - do they think I'm still at uni 15 years later, plugging away at the world's most thorough dissertation?

TheInebriati · 25/04/2019 22:26

If you are a criminal mastermind involved in money laundering, then cheeky as fuck comments such as ''you’ve got a lot of money for a home maker'' are a tip off.

An actual investigation wouldn't alert you to the fact you are being investigated.

badlydrawnperson · 25/04/2019 22:27

The money laundering excuse is fucking ridiculous.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 25/04/2019 22:29

If you are a criminal mastermind involved in money laundering,

Ahh but plenty of them are very far from “mastermind” Wink

Teanocoffeethanks · 25/04/2019 22:31

I very much doubt they rely on a nosey, indiscreet teller who's only handing over a record of already-approved transactions.

^^incorrect. Its their job to ask where the origin of funds may have come from as part of ML checks. However i think the comment concerning having a lot of money was rude and unnecessary. The staff can be held personally responsible and face criminal prosecution if they don't follow AML requirements. Also banks should keep data upto date.

Lardlizard · 25/04/2019 22:33

Don’t think there’s every going to be much chAnce of me being a criminal mastermind !

Perhaps I should have updated it as voluntary charity worker

Rely? No. There are lots of methods at play to detect money laundering. But face to face interactions can be a big help.

Lardlizard · 25/04/2019 22:34

I wasn’t depositing any money just asking for a statement

LittleElle · 25/04/2019 22:35

Wait no one is commenting on the humble brag nicely slid into the OP?

ny20005 · 25/04/2019 22:55

@badlydrawnperson

'Know your customer' perhaps you want to google it & read up on it 🙄

Sunlov · 25/04/2019 23:09

Wait no one is commenting on the humble brag nicely slid into the OP?
We're above that.
Clearly the OP was just concerned about being questioned about her bank balance. Wink
