To think £75 a week to get to work is a bit steep

Why is public transport so expensive??

OP posts:
ZippyBungleandGeorge · 25/04/2019 08:55

When I was still commuting it was £125 a week

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 25/04/2019 08:57

Even my more local job is thirty pounds a week in petrol plus either £360 a month parking permit or £3.60 a day park and ride which adds at least an hour to my day. To get the train would take me twice as long and cost £22 a day

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 25/04/2019 08:57

And I don't live rurally

BogglesGoggles · 25/04/2019 08:58

Ha, that would be cheap for me. Is your commute drivable instead?

NerdyBird · 25/04/2019 08:58

That's pretty standard if it's 5 days and your commute is at least 30mins. I pay £60 a week for 3 days, and work one at home. Mine is Surrey-London, 1 train and 2 tubes 1hr minimum.
If it's 10mins on the bus then yeah it's expensive!

Eliza9919 · 25/04/2019 08:59

My old train ticket was more than my mortgage. Then I still had to pay-as-I-went once in London.

ivykaty44 · 25/04/2019 09:00

Why is public transport so expensive??

Private car travel is subsided, fuel has been frozen for the last 6/7 years and would be at around £2.20 a litre
It’s to keep the electorate happy

Consequently public transport costs rise

Seems unfair when 2.2 billion trips in private cars will be under 1 mile this year

itbemay1 · 25/04/2019 09:03

My DD who is doing a low paid internship pays £60.50pw that's almost half her wage!

DerelictWreck · 25/04/2019 09:04

This is mad, I spent £60 a month on the bus every work day for 1hr each way, in London!

amandacarnet · 25/04/2019 09:06

It is outrageous. Public transport outside London can be very expensive. And when you are talking about buses,it is largely the lower paid using them.

ginandtonicformeplease · 25/04/2019 09:07

Over £200 a week for the train plus tube. What really annoys me is that the train ticket say 7 days but trains don't run from my local station on Sundays, so I can't use it. I've pointed out this out to the train company but they've basically told me to sod off.

Contraceptionismyfriend · 25/04/2019 09:09

UK public Transport is a sick joke.
We've been to Malta, Germany, Spain and the comparisons are ridiculous.
The British public are having the piss ripped into them but what do we do?! Nothing!
Has anyone ever tried complaining to First? You'll never get a reply. There's no accountability and no shits given. I don't mind the effort of using public transport but solely learnt to drive just because I felt like the but of someone's joke.

ivykaty44 · 25/04/2019 09:10

£30billion to be spent on road infrastructure
£840 million to be invested in public transport

If you swapped those figures around and subsided public transport fares with £30billion you wouldn’t need to spend that money on the roads

EmeraldShamrock · 25/04/2019 09:11

Wow I didn't realise it was so expensive for everyone. Yanbu.

DGRossetti · 25/04/2019 09:11

I never understood why, reading threads like this, employers don't twig that offering homeworking is for most a pay rise.

If the OP could WFH they would have immediately bagged a £300/month pay rise.

adaline · 25/04/2019 09:13

YANBU it is absolutely ridiculous.

It's not surprising people drive to work when public transport costs 3-4 times as much as driving and is far less reliable!

amandacarnet · 25/04/2019 09:23

I had some people stay from abroad and they were shocked at our train fares. I see the train as for well off people. They live in a poorer country and their train fares are heavily subsidised.

whyohwhyowhydididoit · 25/04/2019 09:23

It depends what the salary is. My DH and DC all work in Central London and pay more than that a month for their season tickets. However they earn enough to make it worthwhile. If it is a low paid job it might not be worth it.

Sexnotgender · 25/04/2019 09:25

£14 per day for train then another £50 per month for tram though I can claim £5 a day in expenses.

We also subsidise public transport in Europe.

A lot of the train companies are owned by french companies that take the profit they make and use it to subsidise travel in Europe.

Public transport need to be re-nationalised and not run for profit if they expect people to give up their cars.

amandacarnet · 25/04/2019 09:28

Except even if you are in a low paid job, if the alternative is being unemployed, you may have no choice. And even unemployed people have to pay to attend the job centre once a week. With the closure of many centres that people could walk to, this is often a heavy burden. I remember talking to one woman on £73.10 a week have to pay nearly seven pounds a week to get to the job centre once a week. Nearly one tenth of her income.

kalopali · 25/04/2019 09:29

Costs me £200 in petrol and £75 parking per month before you take any wear & year into account.

HowardSpring · 25/04/2019 09:30

The comment above that only high earners pay hefty travel expenses is misguided.

I know many people who have minimum wage jobs in towns outside their small town/village and pay over £25 a day to get to work. They have no choice as otherwise sanctioned by DWP. Not being able to afford transport is not considered a reason for refusing to take a min wage job

HowardSpring · 25/04/2019 09:34

I also pay £17 a day in station parking + fares. (£85 a week)

babysharkah · 25/04/2019 09:36

£75 is cheap, about half of what I pay. I'm only in z4 London
