How do you pronounce Prince Louis name

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 23/04/2019 08:46

Trival i know, but the radio station i'm listening to this morning keeps pronoucing it Lew-is (as in the Tv dectective) and its really anmoying me because its Lou-ee (as in walsh or tomlinson) isn't it?

Now i know there is some confusion about how you pronounce Eugenie's name wether its eu- JANE-y or Eu- Gene-y and prince Harry's name is some what of a throw bavk to how they would have pronounced Henry in the 15c.

So I'm wondering if i've missed something and the Palace have actally said its pronouced Lew-is rather than the lou-ee pronoucation that would normally assoccated with the name.

The pictures would be much better if the shadows weren't on his face. The composition is OK but they aren't as good as the ones she usually posts.

BertrandRussell · 23/04/2019 09:25

I just think they aren’t very good photographs and are very dull. And the poor child’s hair is awful. I would have deleted them and had another go if I’d been the D of C. The have an air of “oh, that’ll do”- whixhbis a surprise. Her pictures are usually lovely

chaosisaladder · 23/04/2019 09:30

I thought Eugenie was pronounced Eu-jean-ie for the longest time. When she got married, I heard a commentator say Eu-jenny and I think it’s really gorgeous.

Louis (Lou-ee, always) is also a gorgeous name.

ginghamtablecloths · 23/04/2019 09:31

It depends on whether you're European or American. We Brits say 'loo-wee' but in the USA they say 'loo-is' and that's just the way it is.

We both think we're right.

Eminybob · 23/04/2019 09:36

Just had a look at the Louis pictures - he’s soooo much like his dad! More so than George I think.

TimeforDuggee · 23/04/2019 09:36

I smiled to myself that his hair looks just like my own 1 year old except slightly better tamed. Glad to know it's awful.

Re Harry for Henry

The old pronunciation is recorded in Shakespeare's 'Henry V' - in the famous speech before battle: 'Cry God for England, Harry and St George!'

LillianGish · 23/04/2019 09:40

Using Harry as a diminutive of Henry is hardly unusual (or posh for that matter). My grandfather was a Henry known as Harry as were many of his generation - much as many John’s were known as Jack, Margarets as Peggy or Daisy etc. I think Louis would only be pronounced Lewis by people who can’t pronounce any name unless it’s spelled phonetically (it’s not as if there haven’t been enough famous people called Louis over the years). I can also see how certain people might call their baby Lewis and spell it Louis - the sort of people who want their child to have an unusual spelling to make them youneek.

Unicornshopkeeper · 23/04/2019 09:41

timeforduggee same with my almost 1 yo. Not really sure what we're supposed to do to make it more acceptable? A perm?

ImTheRealHFella · 23/04/2019 09:43

Louis here = Lew-ee pronunciation

Louis in USA = Lewis. As in Louis Armstrong should be pronounced Lewis.

Eugenie is Eu-sheh-nie. It's neither 'jay' nor 'gene' in the middle syllable, it's somewhere in the middle.

picklemepopcorn · 23/04/2019 09:44

Louis is pronounced Lewis in America- the famous jazz musicion, singing hello dolly, pronounced his own name that way.

picklemepopcorn · 23/04/2019 09:44

Yes, Louis Armstrong! Senior moment.

LarkDescending · 23/04/2019 09:46

Silly radio station, whoever they are! We have a 6yo Louis in the family and fortunately nobody has yet decided to pronounce it the American way.

Regarding Eugenie - I had a childhood friend with this name (pron YouZHEYnee) so was surprised when around the time of the Princess’ wedding it emerged that she pronounced it YOUzhuhnee.

Sweet photos, even if the light isn’t quite right. I think the birthday boy takes after Grandpa Middleton.

chaosisaladder · 23/04/2019 09:49

I really wish mumsnet had the option for voice notes so I could listen to all these pronunciations of Eugenie Grin

Jfkqueen · 23/04/2019 09:50

Yep definitely American way is Lewis. As in Battle of Louisburg is pronounced Lewisburg.

BertrandRussell · 23/04/2019 09:51

It’s the parting I’m objecting to- not the hair! I hate seeing a baby’s hair combed like that.

EdWinchester · 23/04/2019 09:51

I think they could’ve just let his hair ‘be’.

And not slicked it into a Jacob Rees-Mogg.

JaneEyre07 · 23/04/2019 09:53

It's one of those names that is said differently by classes... middle to upper say lou-ee and lower say lewis.

And I don't mean that snobbily, just as an observation to the people I've met with that name.

LarkDescending · 23/04/2019 09:58

This is how Eugenie pronounces her name:

SrSteveOskowski · 23/04/2019 10:05

Definitely LOU-e, as in Walsh.

I think he's the absolute spit of Michael Middleton (Prince Louis obviously, not Louis Walsh Grin)

LillianGish · 23/04/2019 10:06

Eugenie is quite common in France - I know several - all pronounced You-shenee (try saying Use yer knee) with the emphasis on the first syllable. Completely with you Bert re Louis’ parting.

Elphame · 23/04/2019 10:08

Lou ee - just like my cat and my cleaner.....

Pinkarsedfly · 23/04/2019 10:09

Beautiful baby, Hitler hairdo. Why???

LaurieMarlow · 23/04/2019 10:11

I have a Louis. It’s most definitely Loo ee. I hate Lewis.

Louis Litt in Suits threw me though. It’s good to know that the norms are different in the states.

MardyBra · 23/04/2019 10:12

Harry is a diminutive of Henry - not an old pronunciation. Like Sally is a diminutive of Sarah.
