So today I went to the races and I put a bet on a horse for £2 and it was 10-1
So I should have won £22 (I think )
Anyway handed over my £2 and the guy on the computer printed the ticket and he had put down my stake was £10
Anyway walked away and the horse won and I got £110 back
Was I wrong not to tell them I only bet £2

No I think bookies are fair game really- I wouldn't deliberately steal from anyone but as it was their mistake, yanbu!

I think they have to honour the odds on the slip. DH put a beer on the Superbowl a few years agoa friend was having a bit of a viewing party and they put the wrong odds on the slip (they were odds on favourites and they'd switched the numbers round), he was honest and told them when he went to collect his winnings and the staff member got the manager but they had to honour it. It was great we went away for a weekend 😊

I think getting them to understand and take the excess back might be problematic. Perhaps donate some to your local food bank to soothe your conscience a bit. At least you will know it’s gone to good use.

As someone who used to work in the betting industry I can assure you that YANBU. Take the sods for everything you can, lord knows they'd do the same to you. Very unethical businesses, it's not your problem that they made a stupid mistake. Also £100 is absolutely nothing to them

Technically, sure, you're being unreasonable and should have said something, but if I'm being honest I would probably have kept quiet too. I'm usually very honest and I only just pointed out to the checkout person at my local supermarket when a full tray of tins of cat food scanned through at the single item price, but I wouldn't give a bookie the same consideration. I don't think that's really right of me, but there you go. I would probably ease my guilt by spending my "ill gotten gains" on my dc instead of myself though

agree With @mountainpeakgeek and have the same thinking - I would be honest with retailers and grocery stores etc but not an industry that takes advantage of people. If you feel that bad then donate half to your favourite charity.

Horse racing, dog racing etc will only happen as along as people bet on it. You can bet ( ) your ass that horse racing would have died out with bear baiting if no one was making money on it from people losing a weeks wages on betting.

Its the gamblers who are hooked by the bookies that keep it going, not the owners or the trainers or the jockeys.

All that said, I think the OP should keep the money.

It's £100 we're not talking a huge, potentially massive amount it's just a tidy enough extra. Keep quiet, don't stick it in the bank and let it disappear with all the bills and direct debits.

Oh give over. I don't like the gambling industry generally, and it's not something I'd personally take up as a hobby, but you can have the occasional flutter without becoming addicted or losing your house, in the same way as I can have a glass of wine without ending up on the street.

If I’d won 120k then maybe I’d feel a little guilty...... maybe.......possibly....... actually do you know what, I wouldn’t, not at all. My dad used to race, so grow up around stables, and I don’t agree with it at all.

If I ever find anything where I know I can trace the owner I ALWAYS hand it in. However, free money from a bookie? Take it! Don’t donate to charity (it’s hardly millions ffs) and enjoy it.

Take it and enjoy it. I take a lot of £££ off bookies matched betting and feel absolutely no remorse. The gambling industry causes so much misery and heartbreak. A bookie will do everything in its power to take your money and keep it. Everything about them from the fancy websites to the music and graphics on the casinos is set up to reel you in.
