Anyone ever camped out in their back garden?

I'm really tempted. It's so peaceful. Anyone, an adult, ever done it?

Yes!! Our boys absolutely loved it! Go for it 👍🏻

NumbersLetters · 22/04/2019 20:37

Yes, but with my daughter. It was wonderful. I don't know why I haven't done it since.

ForalltheSaints · 22/04/2019 20:38

Once as a child. The tent was sometimes put up as somewhere to go in the shade in the summer too.

edwinbear · 22/04/2019 20:38

Not in ours, as we are in SE London and I’m scared of the foxes, but I have in MIL’s Cornish garden. It was fabulous!

Coulddowithanap · 22/04/2019 20:39

We have with the children. Not the most peaceful place though as we live in a town.

dudsville · 22/04/2019 20:39

Oh! I would LOVE to do it tonight but haven't prepped and night has fallen. what prep did you do?

Tried it last year and me and the dog lasted 35 minutes. Dh, dd (12) and ds (10) managed all night and they all loved it. Go for it, camping just isn't my thing.

dudsville · 22/04/2019 20:45

Our garden is so peaceful. But i would likely be on my my own, don't think oh would be up for it. Would be on the garden "sofa ". There would be foxes, birds, whatnot. What a duvet? Head covering?

DH wants to do this with DD.

They’d love it and I get the tv remote.

Perfect

We have, and even camped out for our wedding anniversary (July) on more than one occaision .
we get yummy food and Wine and have ad a bbq and fire pit out there also.
We use a smallish ridge tent , but we have a double airbed and take out duvet/pillows ....and the utility room key so we can nip in and use the downstairs loo! Its such fun to wake up in the garden..

Ours and next doors cat got a bit confused last time though and both ended up in the tent with us!

We are lucky as we live in a dark skies area and have a big garden backing onto woody bit / fields

dudsville · 22/04/2019 20:49

I'm about to head in for the night but would so love to sleep out. Might plan for it as a dream to look forward to.

Yes we have done it plenty of times, the kids love it and have even had their friends over for camp outs in the summer holiday.

Kids help put up the tent and we do BBQ, marsh mellows on sticks over the fire pit and then games until it goes dark.

All the fun of camping with the luxury of your own bathroom Grin

ThisIsMeOrIsIt · 22/04/2019 20:57

All the time as a child with a friend! Either in our garden or the neighbour's, depending on who's parents could be cajoled into putting the tent up. As kids we made sure we had magazines, torches, blankets, crisps, sweets and drinks. The neighbour had an outside loo but the house would have a door left unlocked for us. Once we took our sleeping bags and a blanket and laid out under the stars for a bit.

I guess my list wouldn't be too different as an adult. Just make sure you have lots of blankets so it remains cosy and remember a bottle opener if required! Enjoy! You've made me want to do it now but I do enough camping with my hobby, just not in my back garden.

10PercentMoreBanana · 22/04/2019 20:57

Do it! I'd love to, but none of my garden is flat enough for a tent!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 22/04/2019 20:58

I did many years ago, my DC were obsessed with Barney (the Dinosaur) and they did a video about camping out.

I put the key to the back door on a string round my neck. DD heard noises and was scared of badgers and wolves . Then fell asleep mid grumble .

We only did as a one off . DH won't entertain camping so we won't do it as a holiday .

SallyWD · 22/04/2019 20:58

Yes I loved it!

Girlicorne · 22/04/2019 20:58

5 years ago before we started camping properly (we are now avid campers, every weekend may to September and most of the 6 weeks holiday) we trialled a night in the garden and loved it. The DC were 4 and 6 and we never looked back. There is nothing better than camping!! me and DH never went as kids ourselves so I have no idea where the love for it came from!

dudsville · 22/04/2019 21:20

Ah, you've all inspired me! I will sleep in bed tonight but plan for garden sleeps in the summer/ future!

I’ve slept on the decking before in a heatwave. I just got the sofa cushions and used those as a mattress and then put my usual duvet and pillows out. Ran a garden extension cord outside for a lamp and stuff. The cats were totally baffled! But it’s fantastic.

EggysMom · 22/04/2019 21:26

We unearthed the freecycle tent from the shed earlier today, it's in good nick, so we're planning on our first garden camp-out in a couple of weeks! We're wondering what our autistic son will make of it, he'll probably try to spend all night on the swing .... One benefit of camping the back garden, wifi Grin

sockatoe · 22/04/2019 21:28

Brilliant summer activity with my eldest. Combined with a nighttime nature walk to see some bats. Not managed to track down the local badgers yet though!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 22/04/2019 21:29

When ds was 8 we had the tent up on the garden all summer,he was out there more than he was in his own bed, often with a mate or two as well.

MereDintofPandiculation · 22/04/2019 21:31

Used to do it as a kid, from about age 9 onwards. At first on the lawn with a meths stove for a breakfast brew, later on, still on the lawn, and then we'd light a fire up on the top terrace of the garden and cook scrambled eggs.

As an adult - in the garden with kids, also completely in the open on the terrace on midsummer day. then started leaving them to camp on their own, with a phone extension in the tent in case of panics. (pre mobile phones)

Good thing, as an adult, about camping in the garden is you can just take your duvet out. For kids, that wouldn't be the done thing at all - you'd have to go the whole hog with proper sleeping bags.

Evening meal is less important, what's important is having breakfast in the tent.

Surprisingly noisy where we are, kids leaving the pub late at night for example. And the garden isn't as teeming with nighttime wildlife as we hoped. But it's still so nice being in the fresh air.

Singleandproud · 22/04/2019 21:31

We've done it several times, normally before a camping trip to check / clean the tent.

Last summer it was so hot during the heat wave DD and I just slept on our double camp bed under the stars. It was a brilliant experience, the cat was bemused sleeping on the end of that bed and not indoors though. The only downside the duvet(yes I was too lazy to dig out sleeping bags) was damp on the top in the morning, however the dew didnt seep through.

Chouetted · 22/04/2019 21:36

I'm desperately tempted but the neighbours already think I'm odd enough. Might try the sleeping outside thing if it gets hotter.
