Will the chicken DEFINITELY kill us??

So, lunchtime today, I whipped up a yummy chicken salad... diced chicken, fried etc etc. Got to the end of the meal and realised that a bigger piece was a bit medium rare... shit!! I did think one of the bits I ate was a bit ‘spongy’.
So my question is, do you ALWAYS get food poisoning off undercooked chicken? Or is it the luck of the draw??
Panic stations here!!

I'd contact your GP first thing in the morning.

Spinnaret · 22/04/2019 20:03

No, you don't always get food poisoning. And if it was at lunchtime, I would expect you to be starting to feel rough already if it was going to be a problem. And definitely by morning. If you are all fine then, don't waste your doctor's time.

DerelictWreck · 22/04/2019 20:04

Most likely be fine. I would imagine a lot of people have eaten undercooked chicken without realising at somepoint! You'll only get food poising if the chicken happens to have the bad micro-organisms happen to take route.

I'm assuming pinkyyy is joking - please don't ring your GP!

fillmyglassplease · 22/04/2019 20:05

You'll be unwell if the chicken was infected. In that case you'll have D&V for a few days.

I wouldn't stress too much but if you feel you become 'very unwell' call 111

DerelictWreck · 22/04/2019 20:06

"if the chicken happens to have the bad micro-organisms happen to take route"

If the chicken happens to have the bad micro-organisms which then happen to take root.

Too much bank-holiday gin

Siameasy · 22/04/2019 20:08

Ew medium rare. Chicken sushi 🙈
You’ll know fairly soon if you are. Last time I had it it was within 12 hours. Not that that’s much comfort

sparklefarts · 22/04/2019 20:10

Food poisoning can take up to 48 hours to kick in. But I think if it's bad it's quite quick?

dementedpixie · 22/04/2019 20:11

Of course you don't ring your gp! What could they do for you anyway? It's just a case of wait and see tbh

donquixotedelamancha · 22/04/2019 20:12

If the chicken happens to have the bad micro-organisms

They aren't bad, just misunderstood.

Blowfishies · 22/04/2019 20:12

Thanks for all your replies so far. I think(hope to Christ!) I’m feeling ropey because I’m ‘waiting’ to feel ill. I’m a massive worrier with stuff like this. Just glad it was only me and DH that ate it and not the kids!

I ate rare chicken by mistake the other night and I was fine....

Hoppinggreen · 22/04/2019 20:13

When I had awful food poisoning from chicken I ate it at about 6pm and then started throwing up at 2am ( for about 24 hours) so about 8 hours later

Sparklesocks · 22/04/2019 20:15

You’ll probably be fine, might have a dodgy tummy though!

dayswithaY · 22/04/2019 20:15

I had a delicious chicken in breadcrumb, Parma ham thingy at a very fashionable restaurant. I'd eaten most of it including the middle when I looked at it whilst I was cutting into the last few bites. It was a very pretty pink colour and looked almost raw. I saw the chef in the background and wanted to kill him for the inevitable sickness and diarrhoea that I assumed I would then have. Nothing, not even a hint of food poisoning. Must have been a healthy chicken.

LorelaiRoryEmily · 22/04/2019 20:16

Oh I ate spongy chicken a few weeks ago(hot chicken from a deli counter) it made it’s reappearance about 2 hours later.

I had vomiting and diarrhea for 6 days🤢 On the plus side I got a Cheque for €100 by way of apology from the company who made it.

Whisky2014 · 22/04/2019 20:18

Wtf @Pinkyyy dont be so dramatic.
You'll be fine, op.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 22/04/2019 20:19

I've done this more times than I can count and never actually been ill....

Ezzie29 · 22/04/2019 20:25

There’s been a couple of times I’ve cooked chicken thoroughly and it’s just not lost a pink tinge even tho it’s definitely, definitely cooked - once we ended up cooking two chicken breasts for over an hour with them still not losing their pink tinge, we realised then it must just be one of those things and we ate it and we’re fine. These were all pre-flavoured ones in foul trays though so I don’t know if that was why, something to do with the flavourings and preservatives maybe. I’ve also accidentally eaten rare chicken a few times and not realised till almost the end of the meal and been fine. Totally know what you mean about convincing yourself you feel ill though! Fingers crossed for you!

Ezzie29 · 22/04/2019 20:25

FOIL trays

Pinkyyy · 22/04/2019 20:26

Well it seems I'm over dramatic. Perhaps you'll be fine then.

Blowfishies · 22/04/2019 20:27

Hate those foul trays 😂

@Pinkyyy I’d be lying if I said the thought hadn’t already crossed my mind 🙈

Ilikethinkingupnewnames · 22/04/2019 20:31

Agree, I've also had perfectly well cooked pink chicken.

MaryPopppins · 22/04/2019 20:31

Chances are you'll be fine.

But I'd be panicking like you, too.

I'd had a suspicious looking last piece of chicken left in Nando's before and spent the next 48 hours nervously waiting to "die"

But I was fine.
