To ask about s/mashed avocado?

Bundlebuns · 22/04/2019 15:26

At 34 years old I've recently had my first taste of avocado in a veg sushi roll - and it's good! I'd like to try it mashed on toast (as seems quite popular). Googling comes up with various recipes involving olive oil, salt, chilli, garlic etc. Questions I have are:

  1. Can I just mash avocado without other ingredients?
  2. Do I use a potato masher if I want it completely smooth?
  3. Will it keep in a fridge? How long?
Thanks in advance!

I’m a new convert to avocado too. I like to roughly mash it with a fork with a squeeze of lime juice and a sprinkle of crushed dried red chilli and serve it on toast with an egg on top. Delicious

I love avocados. I'm just trying a salad recipe with roasted asparagus, boiled egg and avocado (with lemon and oil). I think it's supposed to have dill too but I don't have any but I did have some edamame beans which I've thrown in.

Also beware of
a/ soft avocados because they will be inedible. Overripe avocados are greasy and sometimes brown inside. They should give slightly, that is all.
b/ bruised avocados because every other bugger in the supermarket has squeezed it.

Best is to buy them bright green and rock hard and leave to ripen in a bowl for a few days. When skin turns black (for Haas avocados) or it gives slightly when squeezed gently, it is ready.

Mash half a ripe avocado on toast with a fork. I've discovered through trial and error that your basic wholemeal or granary sliced bread, toasted, is actually much nicer with this than any fancy sourdough.

Squeeze over lemon juice, salt, and some dried chilli flakes. Genuinely, I think this is all it needs.

I normally love all the other gubbins, poached egg etc, fried chorizo pieces, coriander leaves etc, but for me it's just too much when all I want is some avocado on toast.

I went through a phase of eating avocado, feta, red onion and crispy bacon on toast. It's really good

RelaisBlu · 22/04/2019 16:09

Avocado is also wonderful with papaya

EvaHarknessRose · 22/04/2019 16:11

We tend to chop rather than mash, add a bit of tomato chopped up too, then pepper and lemon juice. It won’t keep.

Grumpbum123 · 22/04/2019 16:12

Avocado mashed with a little lemon juice, pepper and a little crumbled feta on top. Yum!!

onalongsabbatical · 22/04/2019 16:12

Be prepared for bitter weeping when you slice into what you think is a ripe one, only to find it's a) black or b) hard just beyond the softness so only a thin layer is edible. Sad
But a perfect avocado is divine. Smile

DointItForTheKids · 22/04/2019 16:15

Oh the disappointment onalong! It can be quite devastating can't it, especially when you don't have any avocado's left on the subs bench and there goes your lunch/dinner/snack! Sad

cricketmum84 · 22/04/2019 16:17

The perfect avocado is so difficult though isn't it! Finding that 2 minute window of perfect ripeness 😂

2 weeks of too hard
2 minutes of perfect ripeness
Black and manky

Haffiana · 22/04/2019 16:24

I was just in Waitrose and there wasn't a single avocado in the whole shop. Not a one, whether ripe, unripe or even organic.

I blame you lot. Grin

SunshineCake · 22/04/2019 16:30

Buy this and save your hand.

onalongsabbatical · 22/04/2019 16:41

Well if it's your last avocado that has let you down I don't even know what could be of any comfort. I mean, there you are, all ready to eat avocado and - no avocado. Few (minor) things are as deeply disappointing.

Egg on toast sans avocado don't cut it.

Jaxhog · 22/04/2019 16:45

I add a little cayanne pepper to mine along with the lemon juice.

Try it chopped in chunks in a salad. Yum!

Marmitemakesmehappy · 22/04/2019 16:45

Holy Grail for me is:

Ripe, mashed with a fork. Touch of olive oil, pepper and chopped cherry tomato (or any tomato on the vine that is firm but flavoursome) and far too much salt.

On hot buttered, seeded bread

mmmmmmmmm

For extra decadence, crispy warm bacon as well.

Mustbetimeforachange · 22/04/2019 16:47

Thick seedy bread, toasted, spicy tomato relish, mashed avocado (salt, pepper, lemon juice), halloumi on top. You can thank me when you've finished.

Ivy44 · 22/04/2019 16:51

I usually just mash it with a fork and add salt and pepper. Chilli flakes too if I’m just having it on toast. For a bigger meal then poached egg or smoked salmon. Sometimes chopped cherry tomatoes.

Liking some of the ideas on here too. With haddock or prawns sounds lovely. Looking forward to trying them.

Bundlebuns · 22/04/2019 16:53

Wow, so many great ideas! Smile Do you butter the toast?

Whenisitover · 22/04/2019 16:56

Butter & marmite, then avo 🤤

Or put Worcestershire sauce in the hole where the stone was and eat with a spoon!

AwdBovril · 22/04/2019 16:58

I like smashed avocado on pumpernickel toast, with an egg (poached or fried), with some pink salt & gound pepper. Maybe some rocket too.

I'd not thought of tomato on it. Yum.

I do only eat half an avocado though, I use an avocado birkenstock to stop the other half from going too brown. It works fairly well, if you cut it very neatly. Even better if used with a splash of lemon juice.

AdaColeman · 22/04/2019 17:02

"Do you butter the toast?"

Is the Pope a Catholic?!

ScrambledSmegs · 22/04/2019 17:05

You can keep the other half of the avocado in the fridge for a few days if you a) leave the stone in that side and b) keep it sealed in an airtight container.

The bit exposed to the air goes a little mottled but is easy to trim off if you don't want it (doesn't bother me, I just mash it in). Total revelation.

Also, scoop out the stone with a spoon. Should pop out quite safely without any of the potential hand injuries. Also makes it easier to grow an avocado plant if you haven't sliced into it. It won't fruit in our climate but it's fun if you like doing stuff like that.

ScrambledSmegs · 22/04/2019 17:07

Butter and avocado? Nope. I'm sure some people like it, but then some people like pineapple on pizza.

bobo26 · 22/04/2019 17:10

Mashed with a fork. Salt, pepper and a few splashes of Worcester sauce. Me and DH love it! Grin
