to say that Next clothing quality has plummeted?

Went in to our local branch today looking for summer tops and everything was some sort of polyester or viscose mix. Yuck!

I ended up buying a linen top in Marks.

Is it because I'm getting older or has their quality gone off a cliff edge?

I vaguely recall a profit warning recently is this why they've cut back? Or is the profit warning because of the drop in quality?

Oh I think I am in the minority! They are very popular in Ireland

Cutcrease · 22/04/2019 18:30

I’ve not bought clothes for myself there for years as styles and quality just aren’t like they used to be. They seem very Per Una-ish these days.

Up to about 18 months ago I got DGD quite a few bits and pieces there. The babygros and vests are still lovely but the clothes for toddlers + are so boring of late. As UptheWolves says, unicorns, rainbows and crappy slogans for girls. Boys look equally dull with equally crappy slogans. I much prefer Zara for kids stuff now and their sales are great. All the children’s clothes I’ve bought there over the last 4 years has washed and worn really well. Can’t say the same about the quality Of the women’s stuff though which often looks very tatty and polyestery.

OneOfOurOwn · 22/04/2019 18:35

I like them for work stuff and I find it washes well. Prints are startling though. Who buys them?

cortex10 · 22/04/2019 18:47

Just posted on another thread and mentioned a couple of items I still have in the wardrobe that date back to the 80s - beautiful tailoring and colours. Next clothing was once something really special to me. Agree it's more like supermarket wear now.

alltoomuchrightnow · 22/04/2019 19:20

As an impoverished student in the late 80s...they were classy and quality and as cortex says, beautiful tailoring. So I'd save up and buy an item every now and then knowing it would last.. I had men's black leather brogues that I wore for years. Or interview/ work trousers. It was the place you went for quality and work wear if you didn't want fusty M&S and something better than BHS.
I did go through a phase of buying their leggings but then Tu and Asda do better quality ones, and Primark do long length ones which I need. So since then I've bought nothing . It's just a sea of polyester in frumpy styles

badg3r · 22/04/2019 20:11

OP if it is nice quality muted basics you are after try uniqlo. Their website is not the fastest but the clothes are great.

I have never been a huge Next fan for grown ups, the cuts are all wrong on me and tbh I'm not a huge fan of the styles. But the few kids boys we have have been ok.

Mummymummums · 22/04/2019 20:27

It's been naff for several years now. I used to shop there but don't now. All quite frumpy imo too.

Chouetted · 22/04/2019 20:41

I found a top I'd bought from Next as a teenager (over 15 years ago!) and the difference in quality was both noticeable and absolutely astounding.

I don't know where to shop now - I'm very tall. Mostly buy from Asos.

applesarerroundandshiny · 22/04/2019 20:48

Next has always been my go to for easy on line shopping. I tend to simple styles / colours and buy similar styles each year. Of the kind of clothing I buy I have found the prices to be quite cheap , but the quality equally cheap.

However I have also found that quality in M&S has been very poor for things I have ordered and sent back and even the T shirts I normally get in Primark have gone down in quality.

MidsomerBurgers · 22/04/2019 20:57

@badg3r

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll take a look Smile

I think the best quality in the medium price range is at Bravissimo , especially for the curvy, I tend to only buy there for tops and dresses and swimwear and M&S for leggings (the better quality ones) or trousers, with the odd bit of designers at Debenhams too.

user1479305498 · 22/04/2019 21:19

Ive found Next in the last8 years or so has had problems with loose threads, loose buttons, bad sizing, nasty colours, all rather different from how it was in the 80s,

Insertinspirationalquotehere · 22/04/2019 21:22

I can tell you when the decline started.
When my eldest was about 15 months old, I got her a huge haul of autumn and winter clothes out of Next. The quality was fantastic, really really good, a range of colours, gorgeous stuff. I went back the following Spring in search of warm weather clothes for her. Stuff was shite and has remained so ever since. She's 12 this summer....

Redland12 · 22/04/2019 22:07

I love their plain black legging, stretchy and long. I ordered some last month! It was like trying on the tightest skinny jeans imaginable! I could hardly get my foot through the leg! Very little stretch. And different material, such a shame.

BadLad · 22/04/2019 23:40

even the T shirts I normally get in Primark have gone down in quality.

Jesus. I didn't think it was possible for those miserable rags to get any worse.

MollyYouInDangerGirl · 22/04/2019 23:47

Yes agree! Half of what next make seems to be made from that horrible stretchy clingy tshirt Jersey material, looks great on a rigid mannequin then you get up close and see it's made from shitty thin material

Lockheart · 23/04/2019 10:26

For some those 'miserable rags' are all they can afford @BadLad - there's no need to sneer. All I could afford for many years was Primark.

Unfinishedkitchen · 23/04/2019 10:31

Maybe the Chairman should focus more on quality and less on being a leading Brexiter.

TildaKauskumholm · 23/04/2019 10:36

I'm surprised they are still popular tbh, I remember going in one some years back and finding it all crap. I hope you are all returning the holey and shrunken items and getting refunds. Clothes are supposed to be fit for purpose just like anything else you buy.

catzrulz · 23/04/2019 10:37

I bought an ecru floral top and it was lovely, only problem was they had put the label on the front of it and you could see it through the material.
Phoned them up and said I'm returning it, the lady on the phone said she had had a few calls like that.
You'd think they would check before anything is dispatched.

MsLayla · 23/04/2019 11:16

Was in there today and they had quite a lot of linen clothing in the summer range. It all looked ok quality.

However I bought a work blouse a couple of months weeks ago and it's already ripped in the arm pit area. Hadn't even worn it a whole day when I noticed it. Very flimsy fabric.

user1457017537 · 24/04/2019 10:41

I like Next leggings, jeggings and coated jeans. I liked the linen frocks with the front pockets and thought the linen was quite good quality.
