to say that Next clothing quality has plummeted?

Went in to our local branch today looking for summer tops and everything was some sort of polyester or viscose mix. Yuck!

I ended up buying a linen top in Marks.

Is it because I'm getting older or has their quality gone off a cliff edge?

I vaguely recall a profit warning recently is this why they've cut back? Or is the profit warning because of the drop in quality?

I’ve always bought most my work outfits from Next as they’re petite range fits me perfectly and I know I don’t even need to try it on.
The last 3 dresses I’ve bought the zips have broken. I won’t be buying a fourth... (reminds me to email complaint)

Lockheart · 22/04/2019 16:36

I bought a few lovely linen tops in Next on Saturday. And a gorgeous cotton summer skirt.

LellyMcKelly · 22/04/2019 16:45

I used to work in Next in the 90s and their clothes were beautiful. They bridged that gap between M&S and Jaeger but with a youthful, ever so slightly bohemian, twist. Now their clothes are poor - cheap fabric, poor finish, tacky jewellery, manmade fabric shoes. All of this would be fine, except the prices are still relatively high. I can buy an equivalent outfit in Tu in Sainsbury’s for around 2/3 of the price.

NoSauce · 22/04/2019 16:47

Next has been crap for at least 10 years. I remember when it first opened it was quite good but I haven’t shopped there for years. Cheap and nasty material and design.

Accountant222 · 22/04/2019 16:54

Back in the day, eighties I think, the quality and style was fabulous, expensive but worth it. Quality is shit now.

Beldon · 22/04/2019 16:54

Definitely went down hill a few years ago. I think they now cater for the sales. Quality is really bad, buttons falling off and hems in trouser falling down etc. The only time I buy anything now is when someone gives me gift voucher, previously most of my clothes and kids clothes were bought there

woodhill · 22/04/2019 16:54

The necklines go baggy on their tops. Don't tend to bother now.

AllTheFunAndGames · 22/04/2019 16:58

My ILs used to go to their sales but stopped going. They said a certain group were bulk buying and que jumped every sale. They had men with vans parked outside and wiped out whole rails as soon as they got inside the door. They are probably selling it off online afterwards.

Medicaltextbook · 22/04/2019 17:09

tinyme77. I have heard that all clothing stores are using cheaper materials because they are struggling and people don't want to pay more.

This is probably true. does that mean Next is charging us what clothes are actually worth and paying good wages/a reasonable price to the manufacturer to prevent things like the Rana Plaza disaster, or the same as Primark etc.

Alternatively are they paying the same to manufacturers and just keeping the extra profit?

I looked at google and came across Nexts own information on being ethical. Also ethical consumer but that was updated in 2017. Does anyone know how I’d find out more up to date stuff?

Imo Next is Asda quality at M&S prices.

I wanted a particular style of trousers in navy, and could only find what I wanted on the Next website. When they came I was horrified: thin, shiny fabric, puckered seams, loose threads and the waistband stitching strayed away from the waitstband in places.

I settled for a black pair from M&S in the end. They were a couple of pounds more, but have had several washes now and still look fine.

Now that M&S appear to have given up their addiction to a frill or an applique on every garment, I find I'm buying more in there atm.

Connieston · 22/04/2019 17:14

Its definitely gone off. I used to use the online service for everything. Quick new dress for work, nice outfit for a weekend away, nice kids shirts and jeans, Xmas outfits, decent underwear, school uniform... Lots of things. The clothes just got too frumpy and comparatively overpriced and tbh the supermarkets have upped their game in terms of quality and durability, so haven't been back in a few years.

Connieston · 22/04/2019 17:17

If you want truly sweat-tastic outfits go to Select. I occasionally get a cutesy hoodie or something from there cough midlife crisis but everything must be pure plastic. I'm dripping in no time.

alltoomuchrightnow · 22/04/2019 17:18

Since the late 80s in my opinion!

Connieston · 22/04/2019 17:20

On a tangent mourn Monsoon.. early 2000s doing beautiful separates and gorgeous fitted jewel coloured special occasion dresses. They went all Joe Brown jumble sale random button asymetrical and I've not been back!

Thatsashame · 22/04/2019 17:27

I was just saying this to dh yesterday

Thatsashame · 22/04/2019 17:30

I bought ds uniform here this year as i had an account and no spare cash. Thinking i was being clever. Well all the shorts have a small hole in now and the pocket seems are coming apart. Bought from george at asda the year before and everything lasted and will be fine for ds 2 this year as well!

Valkarie · 22/04/2019 17:35

Everywhere has gone synthetic unfortunately, including m&s who charge more. I don't see what is wrong with making a t shirt or summer dress out of cotton. I don't want sweaty materials. I do like that next does longer length trousers made for people with hips, but find it harder and harder to get clothes I want anywhere. The mummy tummy doesn't help there though!

Angellucy07 · 22/04/2019 17:37

I remember when my daughter (now 15) was a toddler I used to buy all her clothes from there.
Beautiful summer dresses, pinafore sets with tops and matching tights.
All really good quality. Washed and wore well.

I don't buy from there now for my younger ones.
It's no longer worth the money and the clothes just don't appeal like they used to.

ForalltheSaints · 22/04/2019 17:40

I haven't shopped there for years just on style grounds, but seems that I have made the correct decision. Thanks for reassuring me!

Lockheart · 22/04/2019 17:40

The cotton t-shirts I got from Next literally this weekend were £8.50 or £10, and what seems like nice quality too. Certainly not overly expensive. I have to admit I don't recognise the Next everyone else seems to be describing!

gt84 · 22/04/2019 17:41

Yep I agree.
My younger son has Next school shirts as I liked the fact they came in a pack of 5 but at the time they didn’t have my older son’s size so I ended up getting his in Asda (hadn’t realised they also do a 5 pack!) and the next ones have worn terribly. The collars don’t stay down across the seam and they are covered in bobbles

LadyEdith · 22/04/2019 17:46

I will stick up for next! Plenty of linen and cotton items when I was in there on Saturday. I don't agree there's been a deterioration in quality either. Lovely stuff! I must look crap clearly Grin

User24689 · 22/04/2019 18:23

I used to love their children's clothes, went in their at the weekend and could find nothing nice for DD (4). All flowers or unicorns, so dull. Silly slogans. Quality seemed poor. Shame because a couple of years ago I thought they did the best kids clothes on the high Street

Lungelady · 22/04/2019 18:25

I shop there a lot as I am tall and there is bugger all out there for tall women.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 22/04/2019 18:28

I've thought so about womenswear for years. Kids' clothing is better and washes well, but compared to competitors its overpriced.
