To not care about getting my pale, pale legs out?

It’s fucking boiling.

Now that that’s been said, I’ve sorted my spring/summer capsule wardrobe properly, and the shorts are out, and the tights I would normally wear with dresses and skirts have been put away.

I am, and have always been, extremely pale. Fair skin, fair hair, always buy the 000001 shade in foundation, etc. I don’t tan naturally, and I don’t want to use the fake stuff.

So many of my friends always comment that they aren’t ready to get their legs out without tanning first, etc, and the last couple of years I’ve had lots of shocked comments at the fact that I’ll walk around with my “plucked chicken skin” (thanks Hmm ) legs out in the summer.

AIBU to really, really not give a damn? And to think I’ll wear a pair of white denim shorts if I want, without listening to people going, “Oooh, but they’d look much nicer if your legs were tanned”?

I don’t care, would rather just be my natural colour than use chemicals. If I tan, I tan naturally. I feel not, then pale and pasty I remain!

I burn easily so will be using sunblock today.

I’m off on holiday tomorrow, it will be 30 degrees, so my shorts are going on and I don’t really care if anyone notices.

On that, do people really stare at strangers legs and think anything of it?

misper · 21/04/2019 16:28

Super white here. My legs never ever tan. I care about it for a few years in my teens (fake tan etc: but now I simply do not care and cannot be arsed trying to make them look any less pale. Let's all do it!

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 21/04/2019 17:37

I don’t give a monkeys what people think about the colour of my skin, the small bulge in my stomach or the state of my hair. The only persons who opinion I care about is my husbands. And he says he would love me in a bin bag.

I’m not wearing trousers on a day that is this hot just because some idiot thinks my legs look white. Sod that.

I'm many colours. Red faced, tanned arms, white legs marbled with blue veins and red blotches. I wish i cared less. I do always feel a little self conscious at the start of bare leg season, but it wears off. I also get psoriasis on my shins. I'm a treat! Thanks to the pp who posted a pic. We are valued humans too!

CMOTDibbler · 21/04/2019 17:58

I don't do fake tan, and don't really tan very much mostly being inclined to burn. I don't care and have worn short shorts (well, skorts actually) yesterday and today.

I am also showing the world my lovely array of surgical scars which enhance beautifully in the sun as I cba to cover up apart from with f50. Anyone who doesn't like my legs or arms can avert their eyes.

Pondlife87 · 21/04/2019 18:29

I think it's unreasonable of anyone to make you feel like you can't get your legs out because they're pale. The world makes me sad that people are so shallow. It's mass consumption brain washing us all, and telling women we aren't good enough so we have to spend money to be good enough (unless you tan naturally).
You work those milky pins!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 21/04/2019 19:18

My legs are so white they reflect the sun's rays back off perfectly. They're out and I don't care. I'm a goth; my shorts are black, my toenails are painted black, my sandals are black (they have bats on them) and my top is black. Its too hot to give a shit how other people might consider me!

HomeEdRocks18 · 22/04/2019 10:13

I'm extremely pale with red hair and freckles and go lobster red within 10 mins of being in the sun. Despite factor 50 suncream.
I don't want a tan. I'm happy being me.

ForalltheSaints · 22/04/2019 10:26

YANBU. Plenty of others do this, though many are men who should get longer shorts!

PerfectPeony2 · 22/04/2019 11:47

Do it! Yanbu. Embrace your skin tone.

I hate fake tan- so gross. And anyone I know who likes to lie in the sun and get a natural tan - their skin basically looks like a leather handbag by the time they’re 40.

Zoflorabore · 22/04/2019 11:50

Mine only come out when I'm on holiday abroad and I convince myself I'm a hottie Grin

Reality is I hate me legs, not only are they white, they are fat and veiny ( I'm a size 18/20 ) and do not look good in shorts at all.

I would love to have the guts to wear them here, it's bloody boiling.

babygrandmother · 22/04/2019 11:50

There is no law that says you have to have a tan. It's ok to be naturally pale you know! Embrace it!

Kedgeree · 22/04/2019 11:59

I had exactly this discussion with DH yesterday. My legs are clean shaven, slim, toned and whiter than white. Do I care? We went out for brunch - me in shorts- and it was a bit saddening to see so many women in pretty sun dresses with full length leggings, presumably because they didn't want to get their pasty pins out. It's just shit that so many women feel crap about their bodies they make themselves uncomfortable.

mothertruck3r · 22/04/2019 12:10

I'm semi goth and I actively avoid getting a tan - slather on the sunscreen so I am as pale as can be. What a boring world it would be if everyone followed the same fashion and looked the same. Beauty comes in all shades and you shouldn't feel that you can only look nice if you have a tan!
