Ant and Dec on the M&S self service tills...

Wasn’t expecting to hear the voice of a convicted drunk driver when I checked out my shopping the other day. AIBU to feel unhappy about M&S putting Ant &Dec on their self-checkouts? Think I’ll be voting with my feet....by walking over to the staffed checkouts, Grin. Anyone know if this is just for the duration of the current BGT series, (which M&S are sponsoring)?

I have never in my time seen a self service check out in Lidl
I digress
It annoys me how accepted Ant and his shenanigans appear to have been but meh

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/04/2019 01:12

Alesha Dixon in M&S today (I did think WTAF but I had 3 things so I scanned and went , didn't know I could mute)

JemSynergy · 21/04/2019 01:22

The Father Christmas voice on the tills at Poundland were so annoying and SO loud!

Meretricious · 21/04/2019 08:28

I was getting pissed off by the cheeky crappie ant and dec voices. I was in a hurry, having a bad day, late for getting back to work and just wanted to buy my lunch.

They didn’t improve my mood.....

Jacksback · 21/04/2019 08:32

Bloody annoying
Thanks to PP who pointed out the mute button 🤐

JessieMcJessie · 21/04/2019 08:36

It’s all pretty tacky really. And I read that they got 100k each for a day’s work recording them!

Came across this today. Yes it's annoying and even more annoying that the tills either side of me had the soothing lady who usually does the voices.

Also think it's a really poor match for the M&S food brand. M&S food is more Stephen Fry or Kirsty Wark. And and Dec are more Farmfoods or Morrisons.

AlwaysCheddar · 22/04/2019 16:56

Another vote for muting them permanently!

Ijumpedtheshark · 22/04/2019 16:58

I hate it!

DonkeyHohtay · 22/04/2019 16:59

Also wouldn't recognise Alicia Dixon's voice. Had no idea M&S were sponsoring Britain's got Talent, are they trying to go downmarket??

Alsohuman · 22/04/2019 17:01

Keep retail staff in jobs and boycott self service tills. Job done.

Sparklingbrook · 22/04/2019 17:03

A lot of supermarkets don't have staff purely for tills, they are expected to do everything in store so the self service tills mean they can concentrate on filling shelves etc...

Alsohuman · 22/04/2019 17:07

They’d have enough staff if everyone refused to use the self service tills. Customer being king and all that. I won’t use them on principle.

anitagreen · 22/04/2019 17:08

Count yourself lucky our local supermarket has for some reason Elvis Presley's voice on the self service cringeee

CassandraCross · 22/04/2019 17:09

This reminds me of Graham Norton's anecdote about Ian Mckellen in Waitrose at the self service and Ian's voice booming out across the shop exclaiming "It's in the bag!".

Squeegle · 22/04/2019 17:11

I thought what a complete waste of money when I was in there the other day. What are m and s thinking of?

nopen · 22/04/2019 17:17

Convicted drunk driver should be on telly either but yet he's back. Be a different story if he'd killed someone which he easily could've done, horrid excuse for a human that he is.

ElfrideSwancourt · 22/04/2019 17:18

When our local Poundland got self service tills I asked a member of staff if they had redundancies because of them - apparently if 60%(I think not 100% sure of figure but quite high) of all transactions were on self service tills then there wouldn't be any redundancies.

I have been using them since finding this out.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 22/04/2019 17:27

This is a bloke who got behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol and could have killed someone. How is he still a hero.
I don't understand.
Also I can't help think the cute little girl on BGT who said "I've missed you" to Ant had been tutored to say it. I'm sorry its how I feel.
If this was an "unpopular" "celebrity" such as Katie Hopkins who had done what he did. Do you think her misdemeanor would have been forgiven and forgotten as quickly.

JessieMcJessie · 22/04/2019 18:27

Also think it's a really poor match for the M&S food brand. M&S food is more Stephen Fry or Kirsty Wark. And and Dec are more Farmfoods or Morrisons. I agree!

I do also think that it is a wrong move for M and S to be seen to be condoning Ant McPartlin’s media renaissance. Drink driving is such a horrendous error of judgment, paying a massive fine doesn’t mean you can just bounce back into being a role model with appeal to kids.

Make your feelings known via Twitter or on their Facebook page. Or buy a few shares and ask at the AGM.

BarbaraofSevillle · 22/04/2019 18:59

I got 'hello my name is X' from the self service till in M&S this morning and I can't remember who X was, other than it was a woman, and it could have been Amanda Holden for all I know as I have no idea what she sounds like.

It was a well spoken but slightly screechy woman, and I remember thinking 'like fuck you are called X, you're a machine you don't have a name'.

EntirelyAnonymised · 22/04/2019 19:07

My local M&S food hall is choc full of older, well heeled types. I don’t really imagine they are the classic ITV reality show audience. I doubt the Venn diagram overlap for those groups is particularly large. I don’t imagine the core m&s food hall customer base finds this change particularly appealing.

hazell42 · 22/04/2019 19:36

Really?

tanpestryfirescreen · 22/04/2019 19:41

Also think it's a really poor match for the M&S food brand. M&S food is more Stephen Fry or Kirsty Wark. And and Dec are more Farmfoods or Morrisons.

The current M&S adverts are definitely pitching at working class/lower middle though. They have moved from the posh aspirational hushhh voices to the regional accent- everyone can afford this type advert.
