Why don't people have locks on their bathroom doors?

I've never understood this but a lot of people I know don't have locks on their bathroom doors, probably more don't than do. I've always had a lock on mine, it's much easier than knocking if the door is closed or worrying someone will forget to knock and walk in

We have locks. But they are only used when guests are in the house. I think guests prefer it, as it's too easy after a few to walk into the loo not realising someone is in there if you have a few people round . Plus for things like showers etc in the main bathroom., guests prefer it to be locked.

InspectorClouseauMNdivision · 20/04/2019 21:31

I take your locks nad raise you door handles. Seriously. One house didn't actually have door handles on bathroom door.

Mum2jenny · 20/04/2019 21:32

A lock? I don't have a door on mine

PlatinumBrunette · 20/04/2019 21:34

Teenager with issues - don't want them to be able to lock themselves in to cut or OD :-(

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 20/04/2019 21:36

Why don't people with young children just install a lock that can be unlocked from outside if needed?

Ours is an old fashioned style Vacant/Engaged one which you can just use a coin to unlock if needed.

Bringbackthestripes · 20/04/2019 21:38

We don’t even shut the door Blush despite being over 20 years married and me begging DH numerous times to please shut the bloody door because he stinks the whole house out!!!

Chouetted · 20/04/2019 21:39

Even for adults it's safer not to have a lock - we're all one slip in the shower away from a nasty accident.

The alternative is one of those locks that can be opened from both sides, and just save as a guard against someone opening the door without thinking.

Violetroselily · 20/04/2019 21:40

We never had a lock on the bathroom door growing up - if the door was shut, someone was in there.

I once went to a friends house which didnt even have doors on the bathroom or toilet (mid-renovation). That was terrifying.

KittensinaBlender · 20/04/2019 21:41

All the doors in our house (1930’s), including the bathroom and loo’s have locks integrated into them but unfortunately we have long lost the only key we had (hid it when the kids were younger so they didn’t lock themselves in anywhere and can’t find it).

Just never got round to getting a new key made - probably we will when we go to sell. If the doors fully shut, it’s occupied is the general rule (although the kids waltz in and out where ever I am).

Redcrayons · 20/04/2019 21:42

I do on the downstairs loo, mainly because the door doesn't shut properly and can swing open. We don't on the upstairs bathroom though, never get round to it. If the doors shut its occupied.

Livpool · 20/04/2019 21:44

We don't have one. If the bathroom door is shut then someone is in there

Sparklingbrook · 20/04/2019 21:45

We have a lock that can be opened from outside using a coin but we have never had to.
We keep the bathroom door shut because we often have the window open in there to get rid of condensation after showers/baths. So the door shut rule doesn't work here.

Hate staying over at houses with no locks on the bathroom door. Can't relax.

Villanellesproudmum · 20/04/2019 21:46

No door? Glass door? Blimey. Locks on all ours, they can be opened with a coin though.

reetgood · 20/04/2019 21:48

There’s three of us in the house, only two use the bathroom alone (the youngest member still in nappies and requiring adult supervision when bathing). When the doors closed, one of us is in there. When guests come round it’s the same. Never really seen the need?

Butteredghost · 20/04/2019 21:48

Oh god yes, it's my nightmare to go to someones house and their bathroom has no lock. It's on thing if it's a few people over for dinner or a 1 on 1 visit. But it's 100x worse when it's a party with a lot of people and alcohol, someone drunk will always barge in on you.

Aria2015 · 20/04/2019 21:50

I've taken the keys out the bathroom doors so they can't be locked. I don't want to risk my toddler locking himself in. It's never a problem though - even for guests. When a doors shut then we always knock or just use the other bathroom.

reindeermania · 20/04/2019 21:50

I was taught to knock a closed door before opening it, as are my children. A locked door is dangerous (seizures/ accidents etc) and completely unnecessary in a family home, where all members are polite surely?

Impartialerror · 20/04/2019 21:52

We didn’t have locks because of the children, now they are 7 and 10 and we still don’t, think it’s just become the norm.

Sparklingbrook · 20/04/2019 21:55

Is there a correlation between people that don't have locks on their bathroom doors and people who have no bathroom bin? Grin

I think locks and bins should be the law.

Raspberry10 · 20/04/2019 21:55

Can’t get one on it. Fancy 1930’s door/door frame means there’s no space for the bit it slides into. If you put on the main frame it doesn’t line up with the door. You can tell we’ve tried a few times Grin. So we also operate if the doors shut someone’s in there policy, don’t have a choice.

PaintBySticker · 20/04/2019 21:56

We don’t have locks but all our bathrooms have bins. I insist upon it.

RainbowMum11 · 20/04/2019 21:57

It's just me & DD at home so we know if the other is in there!
Although a lock would prevent her from bursting in every-fucking-time I'm on the loo or in the shower!!!!

PaintBySticker · 20/04/2019 21:58

When I say ‘all our bathrooms’ I now realise it sounds like we have 50 Blush We have a bathroom, an en suite and a downstairs toilet.

DonnaDarko · 20/04/2019 21:58

We have locks but we only use them if we have guests. It's not uncommon for me to go into the bathroom for something whilst DP is sitting on the loo 😂 we have no boundaries

MissingChapter · 20/04/2019 21:58

We have a lock high up son children can't use it. But if it's just me and the children in the house it doesn't get locked. More so for if I'm in the shower and there is an emergency, so that they can get in to me.
It is only used when we have guests so the adults have privacy. The kids usually announce to the world when they go to the loo.
