To want more than 10% off a pair of shoes that have been delivered preworn

I am attaching a photo for opinion.

I bought these sandals online when the store had a 20% off code a few weeks ago. It was a good deal as these sandals aren’t often reduced. Even with 20% off they aren’t cheap sandals (about £60 before code so £48 ish with code). When they arrived there was a fault with them as the stitching was coming away at the edge so I returned for another pair that weren’t faulty. No probs so far.

The next pair have arrived today and they have been obviously worn by someone before. I looked on their website and they are now out of stock in my size. I’ve contacted them and said I’d like a new pair and they have confirmed they are out of stock and have offered me a 10% discount. This would equate to about £5 off.

AIBU to expect more off a pair of used shoes? I really want the shoes and feel that I can grudgingly put up with the fact they have already been worn but would expect more than £5 off for this as surely they can’t resell them at anything near that price to anyone else (unless they keep sending it out to people in the hope someone accepts them).

How much would you expect would be a reasonable discount in this case?

Can you not return them for a full refund?

Dahlietta · 21/04/2019 09:20

Can you not return them for a full refund?

As I understand it, the problem is that the OP wants the shoes.

crispysausagerolls · 21/04/2019 09:20

They do not look that worn to me 🙈

Reastie · 21/04/2019 09:25

Yes I can return but I want the shoes and they are now out of stock so if I return the shoes I can’t have them

In this kind of situation, I’ve have other retailers offer a full refund and say “dispose of shoes as you see fit to save us paying return postage on something we can’t sell”. But I think that’s an attitude some places adopt and some don’t, nothing you can do to make them think like that.

I’d just send them back and be done with it, be less likely to order from them again.

Nanasueathome · 21/04/2019 09:38

Toast have those Saltwater sandals in their website
They are available in all sizes other than size 8

BlueCornishPixie · 21/04/2019 09:48

I would see if another retailer has them in stock.

There's no way you should spend 40 odd pounds on a second hand pair of shoes. And it's cheeky of the company to expect a sale of secondhand shoes at that price.

If they won't give you a greater discount, return them for a dull refund and either look elsewhere or wait until they are back in stock. With preference being to look elsewhere so you don't shop with the original retailer

Redyoyo · 21/04/2019 09:53

Get on to Twitter or other social media and shame them into a full refund!

ConcreteUnderpants · 21/04/2019 10:01

Redyoyo -Get on to Twitter or other social media and shame them into a full refund!

Why? The OP knows she can already return them.

Reastie · 21/04/2019 10:26

So my issue with buying elsewhere or waiting until back in stock (if they are this summer) is that originally I purchased them with a limited 20% off everything on the site offer. These sandals are rarely on offer and if I bought them elsewhere they would cost £60 rather than the £48 I paid with the code.

NorthernBirdAtHeart · 21/04/2019 10:27

This happened to me with the exact same company! I sent them back and got a full refund. As much as I wanted the shoes I wasn’t going to buy new shoes that didn’t look new.

Reastie · 21/04/2019 11:54

Northern it’s not the company direct I bought it from but it’s annoying you has the same issue. Do they not check returns?!

OP posts:
greatbigwho · 21/04/2019 11:58

Honestly, it wouldn't bother me in that condition - I doubt I'd have even pushed for a 10% discount. I've bought shoes that marked from a shop before from people trying them on and wandering around the check the fit.

YesimstillwatchingNetflix · 21/04/2019 14:01

@Reastie Have you written to them already? They have a strong interest in you keeping the shoes, so I'd make a fair offer. I'd ask for a 30% discount on top of the discount you already received on sale. Otherwise say you want to return the shoes (you can change your mind if they say no).

Be very polite, and honest. Just say you like the shoes but you can't justify paying that price for worn stock. You'd be happy to keep them but would like the price to reflect the fact that they aren't new.

I think faced with being stuck with an odd pair of worn shoes at the end of their run, they'd rather give you a discount and call it a day.

YesimstillwatchingNetflix · 21/04/2019 14:02

And if that doesn't work, it's amazing what a twitter post tagging the company will achieve.

That or Facebook. 👍🏻

Snowflakes1122 · 21/04/2019 14:18

Wasn’t there anyway that thread where someone else bought a pair of black sandals, and they arrived really worn?

What’s going on lately with shoes bought online?! Confused

Snowflakes1122 · 21/04/2019 14:19

wasn’t there a thread recently stupid phone

FreshAprilStart · 21/04/2019 14:21

100% refund and you get to keep the shoes as that is outrageous to try and pass these off.

Ask for a full refund and for them to arrange collection of the shoes with no inconvenience to you. They'll tell you just to keep them and refund.

bellabasset · 21/04/2019 14:25

They have to pay the postage if you return them also, so I would offer them 25% of the £48, but be happy with 50% off the £48

Reastie · 21/04/2019 14:25

Yesimstillwatching I emailed them the day they arrived with a photo of the issue and saying ideally I’d like to have a replacement but that they didn’t seem to have them in stock on their site so could they confirm if this is the case and if so I would expect money off the shoes for their condition. Got a reply saying 10% discount. Replied to that saying I didn’t feel it was an acceptable discount given they have sent me a pair of used shoes and they are offering me effectively only £5 off, could they offer a further discount. Reply from that was no, 10% was the maximum they could do. I have been polite and honest about it and have said I like the shoes and want them but not to pay lose to full price for worn shoes.

I’m going to try writing to head office I think to see what they say. I wouldn’t bother if I didn’t genuinely really want the shoes but I just can’t justify paying so much for used shoes.

OP posts:
FreshAprilStart · 21/04/2019 14:25

Read your update.

Go back and say that's not acceptable. You want full refund and additional compensation for the inconvenience. Tell them to arrange collection within 7 days or you will dispose of them. Tweet this too.

Stick to your guns. Be firm.

Reastie · 21/04/2019 14:26

For clarity, they have said re their offer of 10% off the used shoes “this is the only discount we can offer on these shoes”

OP posts:
Reastie · 21/04/2019 14:29

Fresh they have said to my 10% not being acceptable that that is all they can offer! I genuinely don’t want to be unreasonable and expect free shoes, I’m not grabby, but I don’t think 10% is particularly reasonable. I like the idea of giving them 7 days to collect the shoes. I am signed off ill atm so it genuinely has been a hassle to return the last pair as I wasn’t up to it so had to get dh to take it to a collectplus place.

OP posts:
YesimstillwatchingNetflix · 21/04/2019 14:33

@Reastie good on you for speaking with head office next. 10% isn't reasonable, and the idea what they are 'unable' to do any better is nonsense. They are hoping you'll go away.

Good luck.
