To ask what we can do to keep 2 under 4s happy when stuck in a hotel in cold and rainy ibiza?

Not having a great time. Have picked the worst week ever for our only 'sun' holiday this year. Really not helped by seeing the pictures of the whole of the UK basking in glorious sunshine Grin

So we are in windy and wet ibiza. No change forecast until the day we fly home Confused. Stuck in an apartment with a 3 year old and not quite walking 15 month old (who wants to hold hands and walk endlessly in and out of the bathroom). We did try and brave the pool yesterday but it was far too cold. Anyone have any ideas? DH is talking about trying to get an early flight home!

Wrap up and go to the beach. The kids can dig and run around and generally let off steam. Warm drinks and chips when you can't take it anymore.

stairway · 20/04/2019 08:18

Last year we managed to get almost 10 days of rain on our holiday to the Sunshine Coast last March. So I feel your pain though it was snowing at home. What made it ok was all the yummy Spanish food. I suggest you go to the beach anyway. Are there any historical sights to see?

donajimena · 20/04/2019 08:20

Find a hotel with an indoor pool or a leisure centre. What resort are you in?

donajimena · 20/04/2019 08:24

I've just seen a picture from some excited friends at the airport. Off to Majorca. Oh dear... Sad

JeezOhGeeWhizz · 20/04/2019 08:25

I would go home.

ritzbiscuits · 20/04/2019 08:36

How long do you have left? Weather looks like it's improving later in the week, though if you've only got a few days, I'd be tempted to come home.

I'm in Manchester and it's unexpectedly glorious for this time of year Shock

DivisionBelles · 20/04/2019 08:36

funmummy48 I think we may have been in Majorca at the same time 11 years ago. Two week holiday and it rained solidly for 12 days. We had a 10 and 8 year old at the time who lived for the swimming pool which they couldn't go in. It was horrendous until the day we left and the sun came out.

Sympathies OP. Is there a kids club or similar for the 4yo? That would kill the boredom for a few hours a day.

Sallycinnamum · 20/04/2019 08:42

I feel your pain OP. We're in Majorca for the weekend and the weather is appalling. We've been coming our here for years and it's never been so cold.

Luckily it's a family apartment so we be got Sky so the kids are watching non stop films but it's pretty miserable.

I'm going out hunting for socks later as I haven't packed enough for the DC. Happy holidays!

BunnyBob · 20/04/2019 08:42

Get your anoraks on, get a bucket and spade and enjoy the empty beaches.

Find a zoo/aquarium to visit

Go to an indoor pool in a posh hotel nearby

Go on a boat trip

Find a soft play centre

I wouldn't come home early! I'd feel cheated!

NorksofPlenty · 20/04/2019 08:44

Totally sympathise, we’re in Ibiza too, it’s freezing!! We were kept awake half the night by the shutters banging in the wind. All earlier flights home sold out, so we’re making the most of it. Definitely hire a car, we managed to have a nice, albeit soggy, day yesterday. The aquarium is nice for half an hour, then we walked around to Cala gracionetta and had lovely posh food and drinks at Chiringuito while the kids played on the beach in the rain. They had fires lit and blankets on chairs so we were cosy and dry sitting outside under the awning watching the kids. I think yours are smaller though so this may not work as well. Not sure how you feel about McDonald’s, but there’s a small soft play in the one at Figueretas which would kill some time. I’ve been googling hotels with indoor pools to see if we can find one which will let us pay to use it. Looks like there’s a few in Santa Eularia so I might try contacting them in a bit. We will also go to Ibiza Town today and go to the museums, nice food and shops. If you get out and have a look around, some of the cafes have little play areas (few toys and books) to keeps kids occupied while you have a nice lunch. Musset in Santa Gertrudis is one which is lovely and is opposite a nice little playpark if the weather improves enough to use it! Good luck!

So disappointing isn't it ? It seems to happen to me a lot.

In France, on a not so great site that we drove ages to. Weather awful , pool freezing, too windy for beach. I was in reception trying to book myself a flight home. Kids say the best part was DVD in car.

In Ireland , at great surf place - That had a plague of black flies and too dangerous water to surf.

And in February in Lanzorote , again freezing weather and no suitable clothes.
DH filled bath with hot water just to try and get warm.

See how much it would cost to go home if you have more than 2 days left. Cut your losses and leave.

SaveOurSausages · 20/04/2019 08:47

I'm going to go against the grain here and say:

  • have you got waterproofs with you and jumpers? If not - are there any cheap markets to buy them? If not - go home.
  • Is it raining constantly and forecast not to stop? Or are there sunny spells? Sunny/cloudy spells I would stay. Bucketing it down all the time - go home.
  • Do you have a buggy with you for youngest?
  • if you CAN find cheap, appropriate clothing and the weather is bearable, then stay and change your mindset. A beach can be good fun in dull weather for kids. Buy a bottle of sangria and take with your husband for you two. Kids muck around the sand, you have a sangria. Go for walks exploring.

I know you must be bloody gutted. However google is your friend, as are the locals (who probably feel sorry for you!) and you need to think if you were in the UK you wouldn't just sit inside for a whole week if it rained. I know we are more geared up for wet weather but do a lot of research before coming home.

Utter crap for you all, I'm so sorry!

Sallycinnamum · 20/04/2019 08:51

We've been to Majorca a few times in April and it's been glorious but we've not been so lucky this time. It really is crap but the DC don't seem.to mind. They were playing quite happily on the sand yesterday in gale force winds!

twocats335 · 20/04/2019 09:20

Similar here in Majorca although my two are older and so are glued to their Ipads!
Isn't there a kids club?

twocats335 · 20/04/2019 09:23

Sally whereabouts are you staying? We're at Cala Bona. We haven't been too unlucky as we've been here a week and it was nice up until yesterday. We go home this evening.

GenderApostate19 · 20/04/2019 09:28

We once went to Majorca at Easter and it was freezing, thankfully there was an indoor pool but it was tiny. We hired a car and toured the island.
As an aside, we got back from Italy yesterday and it was 23 degrees in Lake Garda, which is next to the Mountains, which still had snow! Even Venice had been 18 degrees last week.

BlueSkiesLies · 20/04/2019 09:29

Yikes April is early for Ibiza.

I’d ditch and go home.

BlueSkiesLies · 20/04/2019 09:29

I’m on holiday in Italy and it’s been fucking freezing but it’s an active holiday so didn’t matter so much.

GirlInTheDirtyShirt · 20/04/2019 09:32

I live just across the water on the mainland and we have an alert today for storm tides, so I’d give the beach a miss. It’s hideous weather, we’ve got trees being blown onto cars, the lot. Go home.

Awks · 20/04/2019 09:38

Same here in Tenerife. Cloudy and rain forecast every day till day we fly home. I feel your pain, it's so bloody annoying when you spend a fortune, look forward to it for months then it's cloudy and dark,

sashh · 20/04/2019 09:52

OP

PM NorksofPlenty and have a mini meet up.

Some ideas here, mostly for older children but a coupleof play areas. theculturetrip.com/europe/spain/articles/11-great-things-to-do-with-kids-in-ibiza/

Could you bring a load of sand in and build sand castles? Don't think about the clean up.

Boat trip to Formentera and go look at the light house.? Your children will be free on the ferry.

ShesABelter · 20/04/2019 09:54

Honestly I'd get a flight home. Weather here is fab and you'd have your home comforts.

Hollowvictory · 20/04/2019 09:57

We're in Cornwall it's roasting! Had to go and buy shorts! April is too early for ibiza, canaries a better bet for spring warmth. Just go to the beach anyway, kids dont care if it's rainy. Or get wetsuits and go in the pool. Or pay a day rate to go to a hotel with heated pool. Does your hotel have a creche?

Sallycinnamum · 20/04/2019 09:59

twocats we're in Puerto Pollenca but I've just seen a glimpse of the sun!

I thibk the weather turned on Thursday and it's awful on the mainland apparently. My friend is in Seville and says it's horrendous there!

Hollowvictory · 20/04/2019 10:03

Always choose a hotel with heated pool if going out of season and creche or indoor activities for kids
