...to ask what your favourite Elvis Presley record is ?

Difficult choice. I like Wooden Heart for its twee cutesiness, and Kentucky Rain and It's Only Love for their drama. But I think my favourite is Always On My Mind. Perfect realisation of what could have saved a relationship, in song. The Pet Shop Boys and Willie Nelson versions just don't cut it for me.

DH also sang Way Down, oooh he was good!

forceofhabitandnotneed · 18/04/2019 21:23

Until It's Time For You To Go. I love the way his voice breaks slightly on the line "I was an oak, now I'm a willow and I can bend" - it's gives the whole thing a real vulnerability.

My second and third choices have to be I'll Remember You and Kentucky Rain. I do generally prefer the post-'68 comeback stuff to his earlier work - it was less ground-breaking, but seems to have a great emotional depth to it.

That's all Right

vampirethriller · 18/04/2019 21:25

Can't Help Falling in Love, I sing it to my baby and the dog

bibbitybobbityyhat · 18/04/2019 21:26

Yanbu to ask.

IndigoSpritz · 18/04/2019 21:26

Let us not forget Elvis Presley was also responsible for mawkish shit like My Boy and forgettable trash like King Creole. Generally, though, his records were adequate, at least.

Yep, Indigo, he did some absolute stinkers as well - Don't Cry Daddy, which I think even outbests My Boy in the mawkishness stakes!

Have to confess I'm not a huge fan of his version of American Trilogy - all that grandstanding is a long way from how Mickey Newbury conceived it when he put those songs together.

LuluBellaBlue · 18/04/2019 21:31

Not what you asked...... but shocked no one on Mumsnet has mentioned his horrific treatment of (underage) women?
Interesting to see the response here versus if you asked about Michael Jackson song.
Both had well known under age sexual encounters that were completely ignored at the time.
I guarantee in the next few years there will be more disclosure and Elvis will be unmasked for who he truly was.

Housewife212 · 18/04/2019 21:32

Wasn’t his wife 14 when they married

Mrsjayy · 18/04/2019 21:41

I think she was in her 20s when they married but they met when she was 14

LuluBellaBlue · 18/04/2019 21:45

Yes met Priscilla at 14, countless relationships with 14 year olds.
He was 39 in 1974 when he was seeing a 14 year old (Reeca Smith) .... if that isn’t paedophilia I don’t know what is!!

Hippopotas · 18/04/2019 21:46

Kentucky Rain

HateIsNotGood · 18/04/2019 21:53

In the Ghetto - despite it being an Elvis song.

Milkn0sugar · 18/04/2019 22:26

Can't help falling in love probably wins out but it's a toss up between that and Always on my mind. Love EP.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 18/04/2019 22:34

I like quite a lot but my favourite is the little known Do you know Who I am ?

chezbot · 19/04/2019 00:19

magicstar1 · 19/04/2019 00:42

What a great thread!!! I’m a huge Elvis fan, and have been to Graceland a couple of times. It’s hard to pick a favourite, but Just Pretend is gorgeous, and Pieces of my Life makes me cry as it’s so sad.

OwlBeThere · 19/04/2019 00:56

in the ghetto.something about that song makes me fee all happy-sad.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 19/04/2019 00:56

I have a soft spot for his gospel numbers, which by all accounts are what he actually loved to sing at home in Graceland. Peace in the Valley is just stunning.

HBStowe · 19/04/2019 01:16

I have such a tender spot for ‘I can’t help falling in love with you’. It’s so gentle and beautiful.
