Is it racist to sing a song in a Carabean type accent

My 10 year old has just been told by friends that she is being racist by singing a song she heard that uses the words banara arama (or something similar) sung in a Carabean type accent.
My initial reaction was that it is no worse than singing 'Donald, where's your troosers' in a fake scottish accent, but now I'm thinking about it, is it racist, as traditionally Carabean people have been oppressed in a way the Scottish haven't?
And if so, how do i explain this to a 10 yr old? She is sensitive to the fact that it would be racist to assume all black people are accented in a particular way, and that it is wrong to sing that type of song (words or accent) in a mocking way.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it at all. I imagine I'll be in the minority though.

TeeJay1970 · 18/04/2019 11:49

It's not racist but it could be perceived as rascist.

LostInShoebiz · 18/04/2019 11:49

There’s nothing inherently racist about using an accent but to affect one for comedy purposes or to mock someone could be. Given it’s open to interpretation she might be best to avoid it in future and save herself any bother.

NB no one in Scotland likes it when people ape their accent for comedy purposes.

RiversDisguise · 18/04/2019 11:51

Caribbean. And no, it's not racist.

Chickychoccyegg · 18/04/2019 11:52

It seems everything can be deemed racist these days, i genuinely have no idea if some would consider the singing racist, i wouldn't, but i also wouldnt consider calling someone with brown skin, brown racist either but according to another thread it is, sorry i cant be more help

Ghanagirl · 18/04/2019 11:54

If it’s done in a mocking way it definitely is.
I was the only black girl in my class at school and some of the kids thought it was funny to sing songs or talk in stupid fake Jamaican accent.
It was horrible and it’s a big part of the reason I choose to move to an area that’s diverse so that my DC went to a school with lots of diversity.

Ghanagirl · 18/04/2019 11:57

@Chickychoccyegg
Everything is not “deemed racist”
Racism still exists and I’m fed with people who pretend they are not racist and hide behind statements like that and the equally stupid phrase “it’s political correctness gone mad”.

SunnyDayToday · 18/04/2019 11:59

Sorry for spelling mistake Blush
For what it's worth, there were no black children playing with them at the time, so no danger that she was mocking any particular person, it really was just a song she'd heard and was singing.

I did tell her that as it had concerned this particular child, she should not sing it in front of them, but i wanted to check i wasn't sending the wrong message.
Perhaps i could tell her that as some people could find it offensive, it is best avoided.
Thank you.

Caribbean.

Idk I’m Scottish and it does my fucking head in when people parrot what I say back to me in some daft accent.
I guess the intent matters

SunnyDayToday · 18/04/2019 12:04

I agree that mocking anybodies accent is unpleasant (I've had mine mocked), but it is not inherently racist to do so.

SunnyDayToday · 18/04/2019 12:04

In this case, she was just singing the song as she'd heard it.

It's a bit cringe. Think Mike Reid's UKIP calypso.

m.youtube.com/watch?v=lYOBZ3Seeio

We used to have to sing awful stuff like this at school. Looking back it's very WTF! Borderline racist and best avoided.

Chickychoccyegg · 18/04/2019 12:13

@Ghanagirl obviously racism exists, no ones saying it doesnt, that doesnt make everything racist, when its not intended to be

Ghanagirl · 18/04/2019 12:18

@Chickychoccyegg
Okay🙄

KylieKoKo · 18/04/2019 12:20

@chickychoccyeegg

Whether or not something is racist is determined by it's effect on oppressed ethic minorities not the intention of the perpetrator. It is possible to be racist without intending to be.

brizzlemint · 18/04/2019 12:23

It's no different to children singing songs in a foreign language or to white people rapping so no, it's not racist.

Ghanagirl · 18/04/2019 12:25

@Chickychoccyegg
It must be tough being the arbiter of what is or isn’t racist.

fruitbrewhaha · 18/04/2019 12:25

Then someone need to have a word with all the cod reggae artists.

FabulousGuineaPig · 18/04/2019 12:26

I think being offended by this are being a bit precious really.

Obviouspretzel · 18/04/2019 12:26

@brizzlemint it's nothing like either of those two things.

Chickychoccyegg · 18/04/2019 12:30

@Ghanagirl since we're talking about a young child innocently singing a song, no i dont think thats racist, do you?
Im in no way any kind of expert of what different people find racist, some things are obviously racist, others less so obvious, and surely a bit more personal opinion/situation?

handslikecowstits · 18/04/2019 12:31

Sting must be shitting himself in that case. He's from Newcastle FFS. Grin

LillithsFamiliar · 18/04/2019 12:32

I would think it was racist. Singing in an American accent (because the original singer was American) wouldn't be racist. But singing only certain words in a certain accent, I'd consider racist.
But I'm Scottish and I hate people singing in a mock/comedy Scottish accent.

Laiste · 18/04/2019 12:39

I confess i sing (to myself, around the house) Sebastian's Kiss The Girl (Samuel Wright) in the accent it's sung in in the film. (Disney, Little Mermaid.)

GarthFunkel · 18/04/2019 12:40

I hate people singing in a mock/comedy Scottish accent I can't sing along to the Proclaimers any other way though.
