Is it racist to sing a song in a Carabean type accent

My 10 year old has just been told by friends that she is being racist by singing a song she heard that uses the words banara arama (or something similar) sung in a Carabean type accent.
My initial reaction was that it is no worse than singing 'Donald, where's your troosers' in a fake scottish accent, but now I'm thinking about it, is it racist, as traditionally Carabean people have been oppressed in a way the Scottish haven't?
And if so, how do i explain this to a 10 yr old? She is sensitive to the fact that it would be racist to assume all black people are accented in a particular way, and that it is wrong to sing that type of song (words or accent) in a mocking way.

She probably never intended it to be racist. I don't think it is, but can see how the DC might wonder.
DC are super sensitive to saying or acting racist, which is a good thing. DD will often asked if something is racist. We throw the word at them without proper explanations, they're cautious.
I used to sing along to Bob in a rastifarian accent. With no intent just love.

I think there’s extra amusement for them because I’m a brown person with a Scottish accent. That's bloody awful downthestrada

So, no Benjamin Zephaniah then? Or any other writers of Caribbean origin, unless written in Standard English?

downthestrada · 19/04/2019 08:49

derxa Actually, the first time I remember it happening, I was probably about 11. Went to visit family down south and a "friend" of the family thought it was so amusing to make me say things. Then he would laugh at how it was so Scottish sounding.

Do you read BZ in a parody of a Caribbean accent?

derxa · 19/04/2019 08:59

down I'm white Scottish and every time this happens my heart sinks a bit. And there's no witty way to counter it. DH does an exaggerated Eastenders accent in riposte but I'm not sure that works either. We Scots need to stand together.
My dentist is a 'brown' Glaswegian. Such a calming voice when you're having some heavy duty treatment.

MulderitsmeX · 19/04/2019 09:02

Havent rtft but Scotish people HAVE definitely been oppressed by the english!

As it’s not my natural accent, I run the risk of it sounding like a racist parody, whatever my intentions. Rather like any attempt to sound like an ethnicity you are unfamiliar with. Racism is often how something is perceived by an individual, and deserves sensitivity.

@VladmirsPoutine it wasn't intended as a joke, but glad it gave you a chuckle. No one has answered my rodent based query yet!

Zippy, it was debated at the time as a hot topic, but most of the complaints came from white parents and white academics.
I was teaching primary and a number of children of Jamaican origin absolutely loved it, as did their parents. However some parents of Nigerian origin disapproved of the language. But they tended to disapprove of the Afro-Caribbean community as a whole.
So...

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 19/04/2019 19:39

I'd be uncomfortable with it. Imo it depends on a combination of a) the intent and b) whether people in earshot are uncomfortable or offended. If they are, then random white people on the Internet absolutely do not have any right to say definitively that it's OK.

VladmirsPoutine · 19/04/2019 19:48

Zippy The mouse isn't racist, at least in my view.
