Hi everyone

We are due to go on holiday to Turkey tomorrow but two out of my three kids have fallen Ill today. They both have sore throats and temperatures and have not eaten or drank much today. One of them has just complained that he feels sick.

We have been looking forward to this holiday for six months but I really don't want to take them in this state. Our flights are at 2pm tomorrow and I really don't know what to do. I need to think of a plan b just incase we have to end up cancelling.

Our flights are booked with easyjet and we do have travel insurance, what could my options be if I do cancel? I have only paid for one nights hotel stay and the rest would be paid on arrival.

Will my insurance company pay out? I feel like they both have some kind of virus but the last thing I want to do is take them abroad and be stuck in a hotel room.

Also in our family it’s Sod’s law that one of us gets a cold and a temp when we go away. Pretty much a dead cert as you are relaxing and your body picks up bugs going around

mrsgandy · 18/04/2019 06:52

Asvan I hope you all awake well this morning. And you go on holiday. The fact the 2 kids have it it's probably a cold . I have been on holiday with my dd and she developed double ear infection and strep throat . It was miserable for 5 days out of the 7. I have been on holiday when sick and all I wanted was my own bed . But I'm
Hoping your kids just have a cold and can travel . Sudafed is fantastic so give them a spoon in the airport. Helps decongest .

The tables in planes are hot bed of bacteria I was reading the other day so anyone travelling bring some wipes and use .

Normandy144 · 18/04/2019 06:57

Hope they are feeling better and you are on your way. First thing after you wake up with a cold you can be groggy so give it a while, but in all seriousness it's just a cold and not worth flushing the money down the drain. You will all be so annoyed in a few days when everyone is fine.

WhoAteMyNuts · 18/04/2019 07:38

The people complaining about how it's unfair on the other passengers. You do know there are viruses everywhere, on handles you touch, someone next to you in a shop, on a bus etc. You can pick up colds everywhere that's why they are so common and the country could collapse if everyone at the sign of a cold hid themselves away for days just in case.

If you get on a plane and are worried about picking something up do you wipe down your table, the screen, the remote etc because they are the worst things to pass on a cold to you.

DocusDiplo · 18/04/2019 07:40

Have fun on your holiday OP! I am sure they will get better soon.

LagunaBubbles · 18/04/2019 07:44

Colds don't cause sore throats and temperatures

Of course they do! God some people talk a load of crap on here.

PineapplePatty · 18/04/2019 07:50

Me and DH always seem to end up sitting next to someone who looks like they've got the worst cold known to man on a flight.

You sound like you're looking fo reasons not to go OP. Are you genuinely anxious about things or just travel? Anxiety is horrid but there's help out there Thanks

stayathomer · 18/04/2019 07:50

Is it awful that if it were a country that had the same language and health system and living conditions I might contemplate going but given how tough it would be if you had to end up in the hospital, and also given that you don't have the comforts of for example foods they know, well that would make it all extra tough. Also people saying it's JUST a cough or a cold, sore throats etc can turn into high fevers and if the children are admitting to being sick then they're obviously feeling it

Aridane · 18/04/2019 07:51

Whatsoever the DC want to do?

Aridane · 18/04/2019 07:52

WHAT (not whatsoever)

Mississippilessly · 18/04/2019 07:52

Blimey. Someone left the gate open to the crazy field again.

People fly unwell ALL the time. I am on holiday and clearly caught something from someone on my flight. They weren't just holiday makers, they were people travelling home. These things happen. It sounds like they have a common or garden cold. They will be fine. Sneeze into tissues anti bac hands etc etc.
Do people genuinely believe that people cancel important flights if they have a cold?
And as for 'abusive' - fucking mental.

Aridane · 18/04/2019 07:54

I wouldn't go to Turkey at the moment if you paid me anyway

Well- clearly not the view of the OP and her family (or myself for that matter)!

GirlRaisedInTheSouth · 18/04/2019 07:54

God some people talk a load of crap on here.

Grin
CottonSock · 18/04/2019 07:56

I really hope you didn't cancel.

Aridane · 18/04/2019 07:58

This situation is my worst nightmare. I really don't know what to do

Stop catastrophising!!

Calpol and go (especially as children really want to go - at least that’s what inferred).

And, no, travel insurance won’t respond for a cold and a doctor’s letter won’t suffice- instead they’ll be a full medical form / report your GP will need to fill in and for which he’s entitled to charge

Honeydukes92 · 18/04/2019 07:58

Hope they’re better OP and you’re on your way to a nice family holiday xxx

thisisthetime · 18/04/2019 07:59

I hope you go. I can’t see your insurance paying out for this at all and easyjet policy would just be to rebook at your own cost.

I’m sure they will be fine after a day or 2. If you don’t go you’ll be sitting there wondering why the hell you didn’t.

Aridane · 18/04/2019 08:03

Yes I'm praying for a miracle. We are all packed and ready to go but I really can't risk taking them if it's going to make them feel worse or put others at danger

OP - you really need to get this in perspective. They are not dying, a miracle is not required for a cold, and they are vanishingly unlikely to put others in danger (people with colds travel all the time).

Aridane · 18/04/2019 08:04

For myself, I would prefer to sit out my cold in the sunshine and a nice hotel!

Aridane · 18/04/2019 08:05

(and enjoying the fresh sea air)

Aridane · 18/04/2019 08:05

but understand you don’t want to feel unwell other than in your home

MissHemsworth · 18/04/2019 08:06

I'm just getting over this virus, it's not nice! However it's not so bad that I would cancel a holiday because of it.

Like PPs have said, dose them up with plenty of Calpol & Ibruprofen.

Vagndidit · 18/04/2019 08:07

Please, Op, unless things have taken a turn for the worst overnight, you should just go.

Any chance your children have hay fever? The pollen count is crazy high and likely to bring out sniffly symptoms to anyone with sensitivities here this week (including me). They might actually feel better having gone away on holiday.

JustDanceAddict · 18/04/2019 08:09

I hope they’re ok this morn and you’re off shortly.
I would also fly with a common cold just as I would go about my daily business. If I felt off I’d take paracetamol and prob something to ‘bung me up’ so I wasn’t sneezing everywhere.

SileneOliveira · 18/04/2019 08:09

m just getting over this virus, it's not nice!

You have no idea what is wrong with the children. People talk about "this bug" or "this virus" as if there are fewer than 10 circulating around and you can easily identify X from Z. Doesn't work like that.

Hope next update from OP is on her sun lounger in the Turkish sunshine with her kids playing happily in the pool. Have a good trip, OP!
