To find ‘jokes’ about Maddie McCann upsetting?

Helendee · 17/04/2019 12:45

I saw a clip of Frankie Boyle demonstrating his sense of ‘humour’ by making what I find to be shocking jokes about Maddie.
The audience seemed to find it hilarious but I find it crass and distressing.
Please tell me I am not alone!

Oops that was meant to say. Agree with Harry’s owl

derxa · 18/04/2019 08:22

Because you're Scottish you have some sort of Scottish superpower to understand other Scottish people? That's some talent. I agree 100% with Navigator He brings shame on Scottish people. He's an inadequate wee ned in reality.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 18/04/2019 08:25

As I have already said, I had no idea that the McCanns didn’t like the use of ‘Maddie’

Hence "unintentional"... repeatedly

I don't think anyone who has mentioned this thinks you meant to do it, so I think pathetic is a bit much

StillCoughingandLaughing · 18/04/2019 08:29

Finding it pretty pathetic that I am getting grief for using a shortened form of a name; hardly of importance in the scheme of things is it?

People have already explained why they’ve pulled you up on this. You act outraged at a comedian’s joke, but are happy to buy into this tabloidy ‘ownership’ of someone you’ll never meet.

Dieu · 18/04/2019 08:32

I can't imagine on what planet a joke about MM would be ok. YADNBU.

Dyrne · 18/04/2019 08:32

I think really you have to find all jokes from these comedians offensive otherwise you have to accept you’re a massive hypocrite.

I went to a Jimmy Carr gig just after all the controversy about his joke about amputee veterans. It came up afterwards during the Q&A and he pointed out that it was no more or less offensive than his infamous “gang rape” one liner - to find one funny but find the other offensive is massive hypocrisy.

Agree with PP about Satire - the point is to exaggerate a topic to prove the ridiculousness of it. The moment you find one joke horrendous when you’ve been happily laughing about the rest - boom, the joke is now you.

(And I don’t say this to be snooty - I fully accept i’m A hypocrite. I refuse to watch one particular comedian after his jokes about someone suffering a stroke touched a nerve. I don’t call for him to be banned, I just don’t watch that particular comedian).

pinkhousesarebest · 18/04/2019 08:32

He reminds me of a grown man wearing ladies clothes with a shawl pulled tightly round his face so he can clamber into the last lifeboat leaving women and children behind to drown

This is how I will forever see him now. How appropriate.

idrunthroughanairportforyou · 18/04/2019 08:36

I definitely don't think he's a ned ... he was a teacher ... 🤷🏻‍♀️ not really your stereotypical ned profession is it?

If he was really that bad would he have managed to attract the very liberal non Bernard manning guests he has to his recent show?

HarrysOwl · 18/04/2019 08:40

Oh, the irony, OP.

A joke from a comedian is hardly of importance in the grand scheme of things, is it?

Helendee · 18/04/2019 08:55

I didn’t use the term ‘offended’ at all, I said I found jokes about Madeleine to be crass and upsetting.
I am hardly buying into tabloid nonsense by referring to a little girl by what I thought was her usual form of address.

OP posts:
idrunthroughanairportforyou · 18/04/2019 09:05

You kind of are. You just don't realise it. That's kind of the point. Maddie McCann and the furore that surrounds her is a construct. Much the same as comedian's on stage personas.

idrunthroughanairportforyou · 18/04/2019 09:07

That should have been 'Maddie McCann' in inverted commas.

Madeleine McCann is of course the 'real' girl. I very much doubt Frankie Boyle makes such commments it jokes round the breakfast table when he's himself.

idrunthroughanairportforyou · 18/04/2019 09:08

And comedians' sorry ffs

Lifecraft · 18/04/2019 09:16

I didn’t use the term ‘offended’ at all, I said I found jokes about Madeleine to be crass and upsetting.

But the fact that you're getting grief for calling her Maddie is kind of a metaphor for the whole thread. Some people find the fact that you called her Maddie crass and upsetting, whereas to you, it's no big deal.

Just goes to show that we are all different and find different things acceptable or not acceptable.

Helendee · 18/04/2019 09:17

I’m finding it so hard to understand how you could actually tell that ‘joke’ to an audience if you are a normal, empathic human being.

OP posts:
Lifecraft · 18/04/2019 09:18

No one has a right not to be offended.

Spot on. And just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Helendee · 18/04/2019 09:21

Lifecraft

I have explained so many times that I used ‘Maddie’ in complete ignorance that it was offensive to anyone. It’s a world away from sitting down and constructing a cheap gag about what might have happened to the poor little soul, that is a deliberate act of unpleasantness at the very least.

Not watched any FB.

I do like Ricky Gervais though. There’s a lot of thought behind his comedy, and I agree with PPs that comedy which pushes socially acceptable boundaries plays an important part in protecting freedom of speech. I also think there is value in working through the contradictions and ethical tangles of the darkest parts of society if done by the right person with the right intentions.

Lumene · 18/04/2019 09:24

He reminds me of a grown man wearing ladies clothes with a shawl pulled tightly round his face so he can clamber into the last lifeboat leaving women and children behind to drown

Why should he have to drown instead of a woman just because of social convention?

idrunthroughanairportforyou · 18/04/2019 09:25

I find it hard to understand how a normal empathetic human being could vote Tory but millions do. Not saying you do btw just saying that voting Tory has far more real life dire consequence than any joke a comedian can make. As an example. Or normal empathetic humans buying bloody caged hen eggs. Far worse imo.

Lifecraft · 18/04/2019 09:49

In your opinion. Other opinions are available.

I'm not remotely bothered by you calling her Maddie, but for some people on this thread, is was incredibly crass and insensitive, and you defence of ignorance after 12 years of it being common knowledge is, to them, completely unacceptable.

But the reason you're finding it hard to understand their outrage is the same reason I am finding it hard to understand yours.

It's only a joke, just words. If you don't like, don't listen.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 18/04/2019 09:53

I'm no Frankie fan, not least because the one time I saw him I couldn't understand a word he said, but humour is way that some people find helps them make sense of really dark things.

I don't think I know anyone dreadful who owns cards against humanity or goes to see these comedians. I'm not sure I believe in vile human beings anyway other than in extreme circumstances.

I just don't think FB is your cup of tea. He's not mine either. But some people really like him. I'm not sure what there is to get upset about

TheNavigator · 18/04/2019 09:55

Ok, but in the same way a PP judged Tory voters, I judge people that go to see comedians like Frankie Boyle, Jim Davidson, Bernard Manning et al as socially regressive, unempathetic and prejudiced.

so funny not. I can not for the life me understand how this wanker still gets tickets sold and air play.

TheNavigator · 18/04/2019 10:08

Yup ‘throwback to the 1970s’ pretty much sums him up.
