To find ‘jokes’ about Maddie McCann upsetting?

I saw a clip of Frankie Boyle demonstrating his sense of ‘humour’ by making what I find to be shocking jokes about Maddie.
The audience seemed to find it hilarious but I find it crass and distressing.
Please tell me I am not alone!

He appears to be a horrible human,, if that's what he's aiming for he's hit the mark full on Given the type of humour he sells I would imagine it probably was what he was aiming for! A niche market, but extremely profitable it seems.

donquixotedelamancha · 17/04/2019 14:00

I sometimes wonder if people forget they have an OFF button on their remote control.

How else are people supposed to find things to get offended over?

Can you give us a list of the dark subjects that are acceptable to joke about, if any missing person is off limits.

Many people will cheerfully provide such a list in all seriousness. MN is full of people who insist that something is objectively 'not a joke' because they don't find it funny and that someone's career should be ruined because they joked about something 'unacceptable'.

Quite a lot of people dislike having a society which tolerates things they disagree with.

Thebatmother · 17/04/2019 14:01

I agree that there is a lot of bafflement, crazy theories around whatever happened to MM. it’s also baffling how someone could have a knife to Stephen Lawrence but somehow using humour that actually refers to him personally in order to try unravel and work through the horror of his murder doesn’t seem right imo.

donquixotedelamancha · 17/04/2019 14:02

Indeed. Sarah Silverman has a similar schtick. Given that comedians are exactly like their on screen persona, I assume she is a shallow, far right antisemite.

chillpizza · 17/04/2019 14:06

It’s the same as reading a thread on here. Nobody makes you watch or read it. Just close it or turn it off. If you need to be offended be offended at yourself for not having better judgement to the fact you read/watched in the first place Wink

Hithere12 · 17/04/2019 14:08

I hardly think it matters if I use the diminutive of the poor girl’s name

Actually Kate Mcann has said she doesn’t like her being referred to as Maddie as that’s not her name and she’s never been called Maddie

Happyandglorious · 17/04/2019 14:08

I love dark humour but this totally crosses a line for me.
The less talent the more need to be outrageous....

TheNavigator · 17/04/2019 14:10

Frankie Boyle is vile, he is the modern day Jim Davidson - makes his largely white male audience laugh by punching down. Pathetic.

GunpowderGelatine · 17/04/2019 14:11

YANBU, he said equally vile things about Katie Price's son Harvey. I hate when comedians cross a line and try to labour under the "free speech" guff. No, you're targeting specific people's difficult lives and sensitive situations to simply get a giggle. Although I find Frankie Boyle about as funny as having haemorrhoids, I have no idea why anyone would pay to see him - and annoyingly he comes across as a right leftie virtue signaller on Twitter! Twat

PregnantSea · 17/04/2019 14:12

He's allowed to make the jokes, and you're allowed to not like them.

Rachelle11 · 17/04/2019 14:13

I love Ricky Gervais. Totally offensive but nothing is off limits. If you don't like certain comics don't watch them. It's really that simple.

Rachelle11 · 17/04/2019 14:15

Sarah Silverman is Jewish...

DavetheCat2001 · 17/04/2019 14:19

I've always found Frankie Boyle's seeming obsession with 'paedo jokes' somewhat unsettling.

idrunthroughanairportforyou · 17/04/2019 14:20

Actually this is completely wrong. Politically frankie Boyle couldn't be further from Davidson and on his talk show it is clear that Boyle values women and their viewpoint highly.

I think he's a genius. So is Ricky gervais. I do cringe sometimes but they're geniuses nonetheless. In my most humble opinion Smile

CuriousaboutSamphire · 17/04/2019 14:20

Sarah Silverman is Jewish... Boom tish!

[I think that was the point, Rachelle ]

bellinisurge · 17/04/2019 14:25

I don't go anywhere near his work. He's horrible.

derxa · 17/04/2019 14:27

He's rotten.

Lavellan · 17/04/2019 14:29

I feel like sometimes he has contempt for his audience and wants to see how far he can push them and still watch them laugh.

derxa · 17/04/2019 14:34

LoadOfUtterBoswellocks · 17/04/2019 14:39

I too think Frankie Boyle and Ricky Gervais are geniuses. And I'd add Charlie Brooker to that too.

chocomug · 17/04/2019 14:39

He didn't make jokes about Katie price's son, Harvey. He made jokes about Katie price suddenly wanting privacy and respect when she's had her tits splashed across newspapers for years. He makes jokes about her wanting supposed hate speech banned when she's called many people every name under the sun.

He's calling her out for her double standards. She's happy to have Harvey and her other children in her tv shows, she's exploiting them for her gain. So she is fair game. She can give but can't take.

TigersRoll · 17/04/2019 14:44

I actually didn’t know he made such jokes! I don’t watch telly as a rule whether I have my glasses on or not and I watched AfterLife and Derek which I enjoyed. His stand up is a whole different ball game and no, I didn’t know I should expect that

derxa · 17/04/2019 14:44

"Apparently Jordan [Katie Price] and Peter Andre are fightin' each other over custody of Harvey - well eventually one of them'll lose and have to keep him. I have a theory that Jordan married a cage fighter cause she needed someone strong enough to stop Harvey from fuckin' her."
Delightful

100% right. As per my earlier post about people getting their knickers in a twist about the subject of the joke, when they don't even listen to the content of the joke.

I bet most on here have never even heard what he said. They read "FB jokes about Harvey" in the paper and just take on board the offence they think they ought to feel.

TheNavigator · 17/04/2019 14:52

Yes, but not in their attitudes to anyone who isn't 'like them' - ie male. Left wing men are often the worse misogynists - you'll notice the Labour party has never managed a female leader? Because lefty men spout woke crap while despising women a la the repugnant Frankie. At least you know where you are with a Tory.
