To steal back my bin and hide it in the garden

Two weeks ago our recycling bin went missing and the only one left was the neighbours beaten up one covered in yuck. As the lid has a giant cut and dent, it leaks and doesn't cost properly so stuff gets stuck to the inside of the bin and gross.

Of course we wait to see if they take it in and ours returns but give up and burrow theirs for the fortnight.

Today I take out ours and sue enough the neighbours have put out our nicer bin (despite the white paint splatters). Waited for the bin men and stole it back.

Normally my bin is out front but I've put it in the garden so I can "decorate" it so they can't do it again.

Aibu for being so protective over a sodding bin 😅 (I'm going with yes)

Twice I have had to fetch ex's bin from a neighbour. Last time she had it turned round so the side with the number was hidden but it made it the wrong way round for them to use so clearly deliberate.

She threatened me when I fetched it coming up the street pointing at me and shouting. All very Jeremy Kyle.

We have now painted the number on all four sides and the top.

And written stolen from... Number on it.

UCOforAC12 · 17/04/2019 14:40

Ours are covered with paint splatters and stink so no one wants to steal them 😂

I bought a new box and bag which went missing week 1 so I have no inclination to clean my bin for someone else to steal. It lives in the garage so I don't care about the smell.

Good on you for nicking it back OP. Decorate it as garishly as possible with a secret passive aggressive note in the bin lid if they do steal it!

Our bin men are ace! We have a neighbour who has ventured into the realms of psychotic behaviour over our bins - we have to put them at the end of the rd due to the width of the st - he started hiding them then began threatening to maim my parents who tend to put the bins out. The bin men started hiding his bins 😆😂
It sounds ridiculous but it became quite stressful and the police were involved several times.

Our bin men are great too, they took extra bags after Christmas, and l are happy to recycle random bits like socks and the odd glass bottle that is not in a box. And recycling boxes are neatly stacked on our drive.

RomanyQueen1 · 17/04/2019 16:37

Get it back and paint your number on it, tell them you've done this to avoid confusion.

Scrumptiousbears · 17/04/2019 16:40

Don't rely on stickers. They can be taken off. Paint the numbers on. Thieving bastards.

ParisWilton · 17/04/2019 16:53

Our food waste bin isn't ours. I suspect someone took ours as it was nice and shiny on the outside but it was minging on the inside. Our new bin looks manky on the outside but glistening inside Grin. Oh what a mistake whoever swapped our bins made.

MrsGideon · 17/04/2019 17:12

My recycling bin went missing about a year and a half ago and no matter how many times I've contacted the council, we still don't have one Sad

Lillyringlet · 17/04/2019 17:24

I can't go too crazy with the bin design as my landlords are the neighbours the other side (and lovely) unlike the bin thieves (but that's a whole other thread).

Thinking painting numbers in white and then flowers in the numbers so it is pretty in a way to appease the landlords Wink

There was an hilarious thread a while back about stolen bins... the neighbour actually went round and asked for the bin he had stolen back

Nail varnish is great for painting your house number on. The brighter the colour the better.

Our (numbered) bin went missing while we were on hols. Trawled the neighbourhood and found it a few doors down. Started dragging it away and the owner came out and shouted at us for stealing 'her bin'.
We pointed out the number. She apparently had knocked on our door but as no-one answered, she thought the bin was up for re-distribution!

Painted all over that baby!

PregnantSea · 18/04/2019 03:58

Absolutely take back your bin. What a CF. Agree with others about the bin lock. It solves all of these problems. I would use that in addition to spraying numbers onto the bin and scratching out the outline so that it can't be cleaned off. Do this on every side of the bin.

Decormad38 · 18/04/2019 04:02

We had two recycling bins when we moved into this house. About two weeks after moving in one of the bins went missing. We walked round looking for it but to no avail. Im convinced that the women we bought the house off stole it back. Anyway I immediately got numbers for our bins.
