To wonder if anyone is as weird with their money?

I will preface this by saying that although we are comfortable, we don't have a huge amount of money. Regardless, I have always loved sorting out the family money. Doing little calculations in my notebook, working out budgets, sorting money into different accounts. I make up all these weird money rules like how certain bits of money can only go in certain accounts, if I have 5.74 left over then 5 will go in one account and the 74p will be for another. I overpay the mortgage, even if just by a few pounds and pennies to round it down to an even number...I could go on, the list is endless.

Am I the only person like this? If you too are like this - what are your 'money rules'?

The only odd money rule I have is that when I fill the car up the amount of money owed has to end in a 0 or a 5.

GlossyTaco · 16/04/2019 20:35

I'm weird too op Smile

I have my filofax with lists of how much is in each account and what it's for. I update it whenever any money is spent. I don't really have any weird rules but if any money is spare at the end of the month I do pay extra towards our annual holiday that is pre-booked a year in advance.

I am a very exciting person. Honest.

I don’t think much about money, so couldn’t tell you what goes where. My DH likes to categorise things though, so spends a very long time each month putting tags on a spreadsheet. It seems to keep him happy

LGY1 · 16/04/2019 20:39

I have a spreadsheet with every direct debit & weekly outgoing. It then has auto sums to calculate the amount left in the bank after each transaction.
It’s the first thing I open in conjunction with the banking app every morning!

LittleElle · 16/04/2019 20:40

I’m a bit of a money nerd too! I love this stuff

thefairyfellersmasterstroke · 16/04/2019 20:42

I'm a bit like this too, OP. I have umpteen spreadsheets with about 18 months' projection for each of my bank accounts, and check them daily to ensure everything is going according to plan.

In my case it arose from not keeping a close eye on things in the past then finding out when I couldn't use my bank card that I had exceeded my overdraft limit. Had to depend on a kind friend helping out to get back on track, so now I monitor very closely, know where every penny has come from and where it's going and when, when to shift money around, when to move it back, etc.

I also like to have round figures so if 24p interest is added I'll add 76p to round it up. Rounding to the nearest £5 or £10 is even better.

I am a nerd.

YeOldeTrout · 16/04/2019 20:45

I guess it's fun for you, OP, but sounds like awful hard work to me.
I'm anorexic about money, I find it difficult to spend, but I don't have little rules like you describe.

cstaff · 16/04/2019 20:46

My only rule is don't spend more than what goes in and save some if possible.

cstaff · 16/04/2019 20:47

But yeah you are a complete nerd Grin

devuskums · 16/04/2019 20:49

I am also weird, I have lots of money rules. A new one I have just started is to check my current account balance every evening at 11pm or thereabouts. I like it to be a number ending in £5 or £..00 so I transfer the extra into my ISA. So if there is £146.99 in there I transfer the £1.99. Hopefully I won't notice the money going, but it will bud up into a nice little chunk in a few months.

imbluedabedeba · 16/04/2019 20:51

Do you work full time? I often think I'd be more like this if I had the time

LaurieFairyCake · 16/04/2019 20:51

I discovered something weird about myself this week and actually went with it.

I do better at paying off debt than saving. I mean I literally CAN'T save.

So I deliberately used all of me and dh's allowable overdraft to put into an ISA, knowing that I now will make it a game to pay it off as quick as possible.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 16/04/2019 20:51

You are me OP!! I am constantly doing transfers here and there for these sorts of reasons. It’s like getting a little tick in an imaginary column in my head. Grin

LEDadjacent · 16/04/2019 20:52

I have a spreadsheet, and I put my spending money into a Monzo account every week - brilliant for budgeting.

Pinklittle · 16/04/2019 20:56

I am also a total money nerd, and love a spreadsheet :) it's nice to be amongst friends hehe xx

EustaciaPieface · 16/04/2019 21:01

Another fan of Monzo here @LEDadjacent - I’m a little obsessed with checking it and love moving money from one account to another.

Passthecake30 · 16/04/2019 21:05

Every morning I wake up and look at the bank accounts and online credit card. Not necessarily to do anything mind you, it's just a habit.
Every month I move the odd pennies from each account to the mortgage on the 1st of every month. Not every day like you Smile

BluntAndToThePoint · 16/04/2019 21:05

bakingcupcakes I also do that with petrol. If I don't take my hand off the handle quick enough and have £30.05 I keep going until £35.

LettuceP · 16/04/2019 21:07

I use an app called Money Wise. It's brilliant! I have only one bank account but use the app to split my money up into lots of different pots. I have spending money (split into cash and bank), buffer, bills & petrol, holiday fund, rainy day fund and savings. I enter all incomes and outgoings into the app and transfer money between pots. You can set up reoccurring transactions so all my direct debits register automatically.

Absolutepowercorrupts · 16/04/2019 21:09

Ye Olde Trout
Anorexic about money?
What the actual fuck does that mean.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 16/04/2019 21:10

@bakingcupcakes and @BluntAndToThePoint that's me too.
Soooo annoying I am surging the end to try and make it work-
when the petrol is at 46.94 then 46.95 then 46.97 then 46.98 then 47.01!! AUGH!! I have to start again Blush

Megan2018 · 16/04/2019 21:10

I have a busy full time job but still find time for my endless spreadsheets. I check all the account balances and credit cards daily and reconcile every penny.
It’s an obsession! I have 2 current accounts, 9 savings accounts, 4 cards.
I’ve always done it though, it’s second nature.

Ohyesiam · 16/04/2019 21:10

I’m not like this, but I think if you love juggling all the money and being on top of it you’d probably run a successful business. I’m too scatty, and would love to have this sort of focus.

Exexexcel · 16/04/2019 21:12

I don't do any of this at all. But I can see how some of it would be a good idea. Thanks for all the food for thought. Going to investigate some apps!

Loopytiles · 16/04/2019 21:12

How much time does that take to do?
