To think there are better things to donate €100m to than rebuilding Notre Dame?

I know no one has to donate anything but 2 French billionaires have reportedly donated €100m and €200m respectively towards rebuilding Notre Dame.

The Catholic Church is not exactly short of money.

It just doesn’t really sit right with me spending all that money on a building when it could be used for so many other things

OP, I could maybe understand your point is it was public money. (Although for a building so culturally significant, I do believe there’s a very valid argument for the state helping to fund the repairs). But this is a private individual donating his money to a cause of his choosing. I’d imagine he donates to other organisations as well. As a pp said, there’ll always be a more worthy charity. At least the money is going to something positive, even of it isn’t the thing you’d choose.

French billionaires donating millions to restore an important part of French cultural heritage

I would expect British billionaires to do likewise if a British national treure were destroyed

It's their money and imo far more praiseworthy than just buying more yachts and super-mansions

Vitalogy · 16/04/2019 09:25

It's such another sign that we live in a world where 'things' are valued more than human life. Exactly

Pk37 · 16/04/2019 09:26

I’m glad people are donating.
If we have up on things because they were old we would of lost hundreds of iconic buildings/churches around the world .
There’s always one that has to say shite like this

Putthatlampshadeonyourhead · 16/04/2019 09:26

I an pretty sure the non millionaires that make money, because of tourists visiting the cathedral are very glad they are rebuilding.

Or do those people not matter?

pinkpushchairs · 16/04/2019 09:26

I agree, I think they should donate that €100m to meeeeee! 🙄

Pinkyyy · 16/04/2019 09:27

I can't think of anything better to spend it on. Does anyone know if there's an official place to donate online?

purplelass · 16/04/2019 09:27

Good on 'em I say, Notre Dame is incredibly important to so many people, and should be restored for future generations.

WhatNowRandy · 16/04/2019 09:28

YABU.

We need to leave some interesting ruins for the aliens to find once humans are dead, so there's at least some sign we did something else than ate, farted about and died.

pessimisticstateofperception · 16/04/2019 09:28

What charities and causes do you donate your own money to op?

ImTheRealHFella · 16/04/2019 09:29

Well done people donate to cats homes and frankly, I'm not a fan. Cats....health hazard, nature killer.

Does that mean I would've told someone not to donate to the cats home if they want to? No.

Their money, their business.

Let's face it, we've wasted a shit ton of money on BREXIT and for what? We have no room to criticise whatsoever.

BigChocFrenzy · 16/04/2019 09:29

I'm glad that some billionaires value culture and use their own money to support it.

Less for the French taxpayer to fund

Zoeputthatdown · 16/04/2019 09:31

Their money, their business.

AnnieMay100 · 16/04/2019 09:31

It’s their money they can do what they like with it! They likely only done it to look good but it’s still a nice gesture. The queen sits on millions why doesn’t she help her British people?

MissLucyHoneychurch · 16/04/2019 09:32

Go make a cuppa and stop over thinking

What a daft thing to say to someone on a chat forum.

Bearbehind has a point. I reckon that money would have been raised by smaller public donations from all over the world. I certainly would have chucked 'em a few euros as i love architecture.

ShitAtScarbble · 16/04/2019 09:32

Well £100million could buy you 15 loads of wasted Brexit planning. For context. Or 10 DUP votes ...

I think I love you DGRossetti

MissLucyHoneychurch · 16/04/2019 09:35

I think DUP votes will be going for a lot less now!

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 16/04/2019 09:36

Look, they could have spent that money on more yachts and diamonds for their fourth wife. I'm delighted they are spending it on Notre Dame instead.

Although I think then money needs to be irreversibly given right now, while emotions are still running high, because they will almost certainly think better of the gesture if given time to mull it over.

areyoubeingserviced · 16/04/2019 09:37

Buster- ha ha

TaMereAPoilDevantPrisu · 16/04/2019 09:37

Let's face it, the Catholic church could fund the rebuild without breaking a sweat. Yes it's historically important but I for one want to see the pope put his hand in his pocket.

Lockheart · 16/04/2019 09:38

Actually TaMereAPoilDevantPrisu they won't just have it down the back of the sofa. They'll have pledged it from charitable foundations and trusts which have the money locked away and which they can't spend, or from future company profits. They don't have €100m sat in their bank account, noone does because that would be spectacularly poor financial planning.

IHateUncleJamie · 16/04/2019 09:38

It's almost as if private individuals can spend their money as they choose! Shocking, isn't it? Grin

Honestly, OP. Most ridiculous thread of the day thus far. Biscuit

This is the state backed one for the moment before a national subscription is launched.

Lockheart · 16/04/2019 09:39

How do you know the Pope won't donate anything?
