NotMeNoNo · 04/04/2020 07:11

i had 10k deposit from my grandma's will and the rest a mortgage from my graduate engineer salary, DH was between jobs. At the time we felt it was a stretch.

£120k for tiny two bed flat in 2013, bought outright with inheritance from a parent.

Lonelycrab · 04/04/2020 07:14

195k for a repo in the (now- wasn’t then) trendy bit of Peckham in 2010. Got the offer accepted in 2008 in the dip caused by the crash. Cost 30k to make liveable. It looked like a crack den when we got the keysHmm

Sold in 2014 for quite a bit more.

mountainofdreams · 04/04/2020 07:19

£25'500 for a 2 bed terrace in a cheap area of town in 1999. We got an 100% mortgage and were so happy there.

Salene · 04/04/2020 07:33

We saved up over a period of 4 years for deposit and legal costs etc.

£80K for a 2 bed flat in London in 1991. Sold in 2000 for £188,000 and bought 3 bed much larger flat round the corner for £295,000. We’re currently renovating it. I absolutely love my flat and never want to move. DH wants to retire to the middle of nowhere. He can go on his own. Grin

flutterby31 · 04/04/2020 07:38

2012 two bed terrace £362k using large inheritance. Did a loft conversion to add another bedroom and sold in 2017 for £575k.

Casino218 · 04/04/2020 07:41

£32500 a back to back terrace in 1994. I was a nurse but had a guarantor.

Bisforbert · 04/04/2020 07:42

22000 in 1996 - bought it at an auction, hadn't really got a clue apart from reading a library book on buying a house at auction. Got a mortgage in principle in order to bid and a payday type loan to pay the 10% deposit which I payed off in equity release once I completed. Moved in with a mattress and a camping stove, couldn't even afford a bed for 6 months. Wish I was as happy go lucky and confident now, how things change.

milkmaid97 · 04/04/2020 07:44

£125,000 in 2017 large 3 bed terrace in sought after place in Cornwall. Bought under a locals scheme so was cheaper than others in the area.
Husband had saved some of his student loan from uni so we had a pretty decent deposit £15,000 I think.

poppym12 · 04/04/2020 07:45

1994, £48,500. 3 bed 1930's semi with a massive garden.

NotMeNoNo · 04/04/2020 07:45

@lonelycrab we were in Peckham too, small world.

Ohffs66 · 04/04/2020 07:47

£30k, 1993. One bed Barratt starter home with a tiny kitchen and a spiral staircase.

I was 20. Mum gave me a £10k deposit (she was desperate for me to leave home!) and I got a mortgage for the rest on my £7k salary.

bellinisurge · 04/04/2020 07:48

£77k northern England 1997

LakieLady · 04/04/2020 07:48

£24k, 1982, 2-bed house in Croydon. My boss lied about my salary (£5k) so I could borrow the full amount. Had enough saved for fees.

I had to have a lodger to cover the mortgage and even so nearly lost it a few times when interest rates were up in the teens.

Sold in 1993 for £49k, bought the current house (2-bed semi in Sussex) for the same amount. Fees were covered by my employer because I was on a relocation package. Still had to have a lodger for the first few years, despite £2k+ salary, as interest rates were so high.

Now mortgage free and house is worth £400k. I'll be retiring next year and am really thankful that it's paid for, as I'd never be able to afford to retire otherwise. And it needs £20k spent on it, which (thankfully) we have saved.

I'd have been mortgage-free years ago if I hadn't married my ex and had to give him nearly £100k in the divorce settlement. Angry He had nothing when we married, apart from a pension fund.

Lonelycrab · 04/04/2020 07:49

@NotMeNoNo lol I was in Nunhead, next to the huge church near the Rye (don’t get me started on that bloody church!)... used to drink in the Rye hotel before they messed it up and the clock house too.

My brother also lived in Se15 down near Bellenden rdSmile

LakieLady · 04/04/2020 07:49

Ooops, despite £20k salary, not £2k!

Amimissingsomethinghere · 04/04/2020 07:50
