Ours was in 1999 and it was £20, 000. No heating, made of wood. Just a step up from a caravan. It was romantic.
We sold it with planning permission in 2004 for more than 10 x that and then moved from there.

BettyBigBollocks · 17/04/2019 13:35

£139k in 2012 for a three bed semi-detached on a large corner plot with a garage - lots of space but also LOTS of work that needed doing. Both 21 at the time, £20k deposit was part savings and part gifted by parents.

AwkwardPaws27 · 17/04/2019 13:47

SusannahL I'm not saying we're not a minority but I don't see why we shouldn't recognise that not everyone has the same circumstances?
You seem very keen to impress on everyone that your way is the only way, which it isn't.
Sometimes people need to move out and rent for reasons other than a partner; for example, I'm starting a government graduate scheme in September and will be expected to move anywhere in the UK. Placements are 6-12 months, and the scheme is four years long. Many young people join similar schemes or apprenticeships and have to rent.

£76k in Medway 2003. Sold for £140k in 2013.

SophieTurnersEyebrows · 17/04/2019 14:01

2009, £175k for 3 bed end terrace in the South West. Parents helped me with a deposit.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 17/04/2019 14:02

$670k bought 2 1/2 years ago. One bedroom flat in Manhattan. DH is a native New Yorker for context.

THEsonofaBITCH · 17/04/2019 14:03

£200,000 in 1993 - still live in it, saved for deposit.

awalkintheparka · 17/04/2019 14:23

2017 £235k south west. 3 bed house with driveway and garden. We had a lot of work done to it and is now worth £285k

HamCheeseHamnCheese · 17/04/2019 14:29

£230k, 2015. A 2 bed, 2 bathroom groundfloor flat.

I loved it.

It overlooked beautiful gardens and a stream. We had ducks that waited for us to come home from work and feed them.

It was also only a 20 min train journey to central London.

We made £60k on that flat in 2 years and went on to purchase a 3 bedroom townhouse (in need of work).

Happy memories.

Bought a one bed flat in a purpose built block in west London for £75k in 1998. Sold in 2002 for £150k and used the £75k as a deposit on a 3 bed terrace round the corner (£270k). Paid mortgage off and did loft conversion and sold last year for £860. Bought last and final 6 bed house for £1.3m.
Still have a big mortgage at 47 but DH and I earn well and this is my dream home.

I'm well aware that were we younger without all the unearned equity then even our combined income wouldn't buy us this house.

Whiskyagogo · 17/04/2019 19:37

@SusannahL yes i suppose I am in a tiny minority, I was not in a position to live at home and my parents didn't have the money to give me any form of deposit. They are working class and lived in a council house.

I notice a lot of people on this thread, and most of the people know in real life have only been able to buy a house because they've a) inherited money b) been given money from parents/relative or c) were able to live with parents and save.

Im not knocking it, of course. But not everyone has those opportunities.

Echobelly · 17/04/2019 19:45

First place was a 2-bed terraced house in NE London, Zone 3 tube, £133,000 in 2001, when in my early 20s. I was only earning £14k (v low for London) but I'd inherited around £70k for a deposit from the sale of a property that was left to my siblings and me. Let the second bedroom to friends (well, first two lodgers were friends, last I found online) which more than covered the mortgage. Moved out with future husband because he was working outside the over side of London, and ended up renting it out for longer than I lived there.

flyingspaghettimonster · 17/04/2019 21:08

$85k, 2016. Paid for by a loan from my mum and a bank loan so no mortgage. It is a nightmare of a house as so many issues... we didn't have hot water for a whole year. Kind of wish we had just kept renting so someone else was responsible for the leaking roof and crumbling walls. But very kind if family to have helped us, just wish we had realised more of the problems before buying.

Imabadmummy · 17/04/2019 21:08

West Yorkshire.
2003 - i was 25
Me & DH bought a 3 bed semi in undesirable area - £42k. Was all we could afford. 5% deposit came from savings. Rest was mortgage
Sold for £70k in 2012

Bought another 3 bed - end terrace in desirable area (moved to be near good schools) - £110k - which was a good price as they wanted a quick sale as a part ex.
Houses on our street go for around £140k+ now.

My parents bought their 1st house, the one i grew up in, 3 bed end terrace close to where i live now, in 1978 for £13,000!

Doubletrouble99 · 17/04/2019 21:53

Bought my first property when I was 28 in 1983 for £17,500 it was a 2 bed purpose built flat in a leafy Birmingham suburb with no help from parents bar some old furniture hand me downs. Employer had a relocation package so relocated to Peterborough 18mths later bought a 3 bed semi for £36,000 sold it for £78,000 two years later when I married and bought a new 4 bed detached for £112,000. Have a 4 bed detached in a different part of the country which we built for £180,000 12 years ago, now worth £370,000. So been through several property crashes and survived.

dudsville · 17/04/2019 21:55

£90k in 1999. Sold for £400k in 2013.

mirime · 18/04/2019 09:01

Bought in 2008, 80,000. Now worth around 50,000. Deposit was a 10,000 inheritance.

Homeownership didn't work out so well for us, though there was sorrow as well as relief when we finally sold it - it was our first home together. We're in the process of inheriting the house we live in now so will at least have no rent or mortgage.

speakout · 18/04/2019 09:03

£24K. New build city centre flat. 1983. Interest rates were 13%

Yogagirl123 · 18/04/2019 09:03

42k tiny studio flat, south coast, 1989

katedan · 18/04/2019 09:12

63k in 1997. It was a two bedroom flat in the South East. I feel really sorry for the current generation where house ownership seems impossible.

takeasadsongandmakeitbetter · 18/04/2019 09:16

2015
£215,000
We saved for a 10% deposit and have a big mortgage. Plus lent some money from parents.
We have high repayments so should be pair off in 20ish years

Justonemorepancake · 18/04/2019 09:18

£175k, 2012, 2 bed terrace in Bristol

mummyof2boys30 · 18/04/2019 09:22

90,000 in 2007. Only worth about 115,000 now. In northern ireland

SnappedandFartedagain · 18/04/2019 09:23

Bought a 3 bed house in East London for £56k in 1993. DH and I were 18 and 20. Deposit of £3k each came from savings from Saturday jobs. Lived there for 7 years, paid off mortgage in that time then needed to move but nobody wanted to buy the house as it was in a not so salubrious area, so we had to hold on to it and rent it out while we bought another house. We still have it and it’s valued at £600k now as the area is now considered sought after!

Maddiemademe · 18/04/2019 09:29

£132,000 3 bed Victorian terrace for myself and my ds In 2013. Was very fortunate that my dm gifted me £60,000 for the deposit and I paid all the fees. Sold it in 2017 for £160,000 and moved to a £225,000 3 bed new build semi. Lasted a year in there due to an abusive neighbour (used to work in the porn industry and she took an instant dislike to me) and now in a very run down 5 bed Victorian house for £425,000 that needs a full renovation but now with my dd (3) as well as ds (7).

Unfortunately now in a wheelchair so renovations going very slow and dream every night of the lovely new build with its straight walls and lack of dust.

I was very fortunate to have a dm whenever gave me such a large deposit or I probably wouldn’t have got up the ladder as fast.
