£10,000 in 1977, borrowed the deposit from a family member. Two bedroomed, 3 storey, Victorian terrace with a cellar and long garden. Very similar houses in the same street now fetch £280/300,000 (Home Counties)

£250k in 2007 1 bed zone 2 SW London. I actually owed one other property in Melbourne as a rental investment but can’t remember what I paid. Maybe AU$369k.
Still own the little one bed in SW London. Only lived in it for about 6 months but have moved in occasionally when doing renovations to our own place.

Rent it out now for £1515 per month, probably worth £550k now so in retrospect although the rental yield isn’t great, it was a good investment.

"Proper order". What utter shite.

Bounced around in council/LA housing for years after having DD young, gave up hope of ever buying but as life does, it flip turned and DH and I bought our first house for 234k last year.

I already contributed to the thread, several pages back, saying how we bought our flat and later our current house.
I was responding to some of the later comments suggesting that only people who do things in a certain order should be able to become homeowners. Not everyone has the same journey, as this thread demonstrates.

£14,000 for a 3 bed terraced house in 1980. Sold it for £95k in 2000. Bought our current 3 bed semi in 2000 for £110k. It's now worth £220k. If the estate agent is to be believed.

I always think a house is worth as much as someone will pay for it.

LakieLady · 16/04/2019 18:59

£24k for a 2-bed Edwardian terrace in Croydon in 1982. I got a 100% mortgage and my boss lied about how much I earned.

By the late 80s, it was valued at £84k, but then the recession hit, prices plummeted and I eventually sold it for £49.5k in 1992. I bought a 2-bed semi on the edge of a lovely town in the south downs for the same price.

I was so relieved I hadn't remortgaged it, like a lot of people did, when prices were rising. So many of my friends ended up trapped in negative equity and a few had their houses repossessed.

£8.4k in 1977, I'm a boomer who has made a fortune from property.

However, I did give my DS a £30k deposit for his property, I had no help from my parents

thumper59 · 16/04/2019 19:00

We just bought ours last year. 135k 3 bed in a village up north. Needed a bit of work doing but only where it was dated. We back on to a field with horses in and live in the village I grew up so I love it

Fair enough. My journey wasnt straight forward either. I had periods of shitty relationships, bad landlords and told I couldnt return home.

Thankfully that's all in the past for me.

We paid £85k for a 2 bed in 2010. Sold it for the same amount just over a year later!!

LakieLady · 16/04/2019 19:26

And to those who couldn’t live at home past 18 , was it because you wanted to live with your boyfriend? What’s wrong with dating ?

Most of the young people I've supported who've left home when in their teens have done so because their parents have been abusive in some way, and a couple because their parents have moved overseas and they wanted to finish their education here, or had jobs here and didn't want to go.

FookMeFookYou · 16/04/2019 19:40
