Meeting with lecturer during Easter break

Anotherdayanothernight · 14/04/2019 15:43

Just a question as I'm thinking an employee is trying to get away from a late finish shift tomorrow night (coincidence as the new Got starts...), she claims a lecturer contacted her today to reschedule an impromptu meeting for tomorrow night at 6.30pm. I've never heard of such a thing, why would a lecturer meet someone on their Easter break and reschedule a day before, on a Sunday as well?
I went to uni in a different country so any highlights on this would be much appreciated.

Because lecturers don’t get easter holidays so it’s just another working day for them. If a meeting is needed then it makes sense to schedule it sooner rather than later
It is however more unusual to schedule a meeting in the evening - they would usually be during office hours

SpoonBlender · 14/04/2019 15:49

If she's a postgrad, ie doing a Masters or PhD, school holiday schedules don't apply. They and the staff who will be their supervisors (who are also be lecturers in term time) tend to get more work done while the undergrads are out from underfoot.

LIZS · 14/04/2019 15:49

Seems unlikely although ds is having the occasional discussion re, dissertation with his tutor - during office hours though.

winepls · 14/04/2019 15:50

Definitely weird. But GOT is on at 2am tonight so may well not be that.

HBStowe · 14/04/2019 15:50

Lecturers don’t get holidays off, so it’s not unusal that it’s in the Easter holiday. Sunday night is a bit strange though. I wouldn’t say it’s impossible but it is unusual.

Is the employee normally reliable? If so I would accept this.

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 14/04/2019 15:52

Game of Thrones is tonight, not tomorrow.

LiveFatsDieYoGnu · 14/04/2019 15:52

As Veterinari says, university lecturers (and other staff) don’t work term time only, we get the standard amount of annual leave days like most other people.

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 14/04/2019 15:54

Doesnt sound genuine. I get meeting in hols but on a Sunday??? unless your implode is shagging him/her that is.
GOT sounds odd as it is on at 2am so how late was the original shift due to finish?

NicoAndTheNiners · 14/04/2019 15:56

Regardless of whether it's true or not surely her paid employment takes priority and she needs to say to her lecturer that she can't make that appt as she's working!

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 14/04/2019 15:57

Yep it’s just another day for lecturers. It could be that this was the best time for the lecturer because they had other things on. I’ve had 1 weekend meet up with a lecturer when I was in university, as it was the best time as I was working other days, and other times I was free my lecturer wasn’t.

LiveFatsDieYoGnu · 14/04/2019 15:57

Maybe I have misunderstood the OP, but I read it as the meeting is tomorrow (Monday).

Alienspaceship · 14/04/2019 16:01

Not unusual for lecturers trying to meet with students who are part time and also holding down a full time job. If it was 9pm or something then that would be odd.

WatcherintheRye · 14/04/2019 16:06

So the meeting is scheduled for 6.30 tomorrow (Monday)? It's perfectly possible. I was amazed to finally receive a call from my GP for a phone appt. I'd booked, at 7 in the evening! I think people's increasing workloads mean they have to schedule meetings etc. at times which used to be uncommon, but are now necessary to get everything done.

Anotherdayanothernight · 14/04/2019 16:13

Thanks for your replies, yes, she's normally fairly reliable

Sadly I meet my students in break. Learning never stops if they are doing dissertations. Also do admin on a Sunday.

Anotherdayanothernight · 14/04/2019 16:18

Got is on Sky Atlantic 9pm tomorrow night as well. I have arranged cover for the shift now and hopefully she's telling the truth as I want her to do well at uni.

Academic here - universities do have Easter break, including for lecturers. When it is varies by university, and while people might choose to work, the sudden reschedule sounds fishy... GoT reruns tm night at 9 for those not able to make it at 2am (I will be watching!). I wouldn't believe it!

CostanzaG · 14/04/2019 16:29

It's completely normal for lecturer to meet students during the Easter break.
We don't get the 'holidays' off... I'm available to meet my students all next week.

CostanzaG · 14/04/2019 16:32

Oh and I've spent all weekend working.

Bellatrix14 · 14/04/2019 16:36

I’m currently finishing off my MA, and my dissertation supervisor is away for two weeks for Easter. It was also made clear to us when I did my undergrad degree that we shouldn’t expect a response to emails etc from our lecturers during the holidays. I guess it might vary from university to university though?

WistfulBarnacles · 14/04/2019 16:40

My uni had resit exams this week and next week is a normal teaching week. So it definitely depends on the uni.

Anotherdayanothernight · 14/04/2019 16:49

She did tell me she didn't have any lectures over the Easter so I thought the lecturers were off as well. Sorry for being so ignorant as I didn't realise most are you are working...

Academic here too. We do get an Easter break... Good Friday and Easter Monday. Otherwise, it's business as usual, just no formal teaching. I had several meetings with undergrad students last week.

CostanzaG · 14/04/2019 16:52

Yeah lectures will have most likely have finished but we have marking ( so much marking!) and supervision.
