I know I'm being U to ask, but I'm curious...

I've recently left a job after 8 years.

In those 8 years my pay rose just less than £2000, due to company wide pay rises but sometimes I'd get a little extra (ie the company got 2% but I got 5). I was rewarded in other ways - I was supported through a professional qualification - but not through promotion. This was working for a massive, national company that you would have heard of.

I'm just curious to know how much your pay has increased if you been there a similar length of time, or even less.

I got less than a £20 per week pay rise last week. Less than £20. Before deductions. I wish they had just said no to me. So insulting.

browneyes77 · 15/04/2019 20:15

Been at my company for 5.5 years and each year if I perform I get a 2-2.5% increase. Which works out at around a poxy £700.

So in that time my salary has gone up by £3.5k from when I started. It would’ve been less if I hadn’t had a double pay award one year.

shazkiwi · 15/04/2019 20:18

I'm on minimum wage so my pay has gone up as the minimum wage has risen but no other pay rises. OH is a civil servant & hasn't had a pay rise in 10 - 12 years (can't remember exactly).

Relightmyfire2017 · 15/04/2019 20:46

I've been working for the same very well known national company for 16 years. Just had a crappy measly £400 rise despite the fact that my duties are Management level but my grade is lower. I literally bust a gut every day working with Managers earning £10k more for doing fuck all Angry

I also have a disability which affects a large part of what I do but I never let it get in the way - but they do. I am doing the exact same job as other people on different sites and know I get paid less than them too.

It's very much "if your face fits" culture and I can't be arsed with the bitchy backstabbing - and that's the men!

TBH I would be happy with a thank you now and again but I'm not holding my breath.

Supermum29 · 15/04/2019 20:49

I was with a previous employer for 10 years, in that time my pay rose from £13,500 to £21,500 for 8 of those ten years I had a yearly pay review and bonus usually in the region of £1500-£3000 bonus each year. If the company did really well we’d get vouchers at Christmas etc. too.

HurtyAtThirty · 15/04/2019 21:13

Started on £23K in 2010, but I got a LOT more in OT so probably more like £35K total. I’m on just over £51K not including bonuses. Our salary increase happens once a year, it can range from bonus only to 15% bonus + 10% pay increase. Saying all that though I’m vastly underpaid for my role, just because I moved internally. If the company wanted to hire externally they’d be looking for at least another 10-15K

Jane1727 · 16/04/2019 04:12

I have been at my company for 8!years and my pay has increased by £28k. This is through promotions and annual increases.

Yellowsubmarine79 · 16/04/2019 04:13

Been at my company 9 years, have doubled my salary in that time from £17k to £34k Grin

WhenZogateSuperworm · 16/04/2019 04:14

I started teaching 10 years ago on £20k. I know earn £47k but through moving to a school with poor recruitment and retention and a failing department. Short term project and I will be back down to £38k in another year once the results are up so I will move on elsewhere.

April241 · 16/04/2019 04:24

Approx £8000 in 10 years (nursing) but I'm now at the top of my band so I'm stuck unless I go for promotion. I done that before though and it was AWFUL so I'd rather specialise and work my way up the bands that way.

Seniorschoolmum · 16/04/2019 04:25

In the last thirty months my pay has risen 3% BUT the co has also given us all a 4% pension in-line with new laws. So package has gone up just over 7% in 30 months.

So just about holding even.

Lilypink · 16/04/2019 08:00

I’m so so shocked! I never realised people generally got so much in pay rises!

I work in voluntary sector and in last job I received pay rise of £2k over 14 years to £26k, despite the team I managed doubling in size and risk of the individuals I was supporting increasing dramatically.

I’ve changed jobs (had enough of the high stress and low pay) and pay is set at £23k for a 5 year contract with a potential 1% per year and no increments.

I’ve only been there 1yr and have been asked to apply for a similar job with another organisation on more money and annual increments of £1k per year.

But..I’ve been struggling with my conscience about leaving due to loyalty to my current employer!

I’m clearly a MUG!!

WhoKnewBeefStew · 16/04/2019 08:11

After 3 years my pay has risen by absolutely fuck all.... it’s one (but not the only) reason I’m leaving shortly.

In my previous omoany, which I was employed for 8years, my wage rose by £8000 plus a yearly bonus

Twowilldo50 · 16/04/2019 08:22

Biggest pay rises generally come from job moves so I think forget about staying anywhere much beyond 3 years.

IWouldPreferNotTo · 16/04/2019 08:46

@LilyPink

You've actually not had a pay rise. You're effectively earning less than when you started.

If your salary doesn't go up with inflation its a pay cut

langley0509 · 17/04/2019 09:46

I work in car sales. Been here 5 years and had no pay rise. Last company I worked for for 10 years..... and had no pay rise. Car sales people take a pay cut in real terms each year when you factor in inflation. It is because it is a white low basic plus commission.

Nearly47 · 17/04/2019 10:20

I only got pay rises because I asked. Never been offered.

Indie139 · 17/04/2019 18:22

Ive been in my current job almost 3 years. In that time have had a pay ride of £2k (before deductions)

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 17/04/2019 18:41

23k to 44k in 7 years. That's the result of 3 promotions and 5 role changes though.

Staying in the same role you can get around 5% increase per year at my company, so I'd be on around 30k by now if I never changed role.

I don't think your company should be allowed to promote people internally without advertising the role. There might be better candidates out there.

pintsizedblondie · 17/04/2019 19:10

I started teaching 5 years ago and since then my wage has gone up around £11,000 p/a. I'm nearly at the top of my pay scale now though so it won't go up much more than that unless I decide to go into senior leadership.
