for not ironing my undies.
I have just been told,by a stranger online, that knickers would not be worn in her house unless ironed and asked for the reason I don't iron mine. Wtf?!!! Shock

I moved house and got rid of my (massive pain in the arse) steam iron. I have not yet replaced it and we moved in november!

DontCallMeCharlotte · 13/04/2019 19:27

Plus towels and teatowels, despite me pointing out that it affects absorbency.

My Mum used to iron towels as she said it softens them. This was pre-tumble driers.

pigsDOfly · 13/04/2019 19:27

I didn't iron anything for years when I had my children living at home and I had a tumble drier, which I found got rid of most of the creases.

Now I have a combined washer drier, which relentlessly refuses to dry anything so all my washing is line dried and everything ends up very creased so I've started ironing stuff again; but seriously who the hell irons things like socks and knickers? And towels? Why would people iron towels so they're all flat and miserable. Towels should be fluffy.

Charley34 · 13/04/2019 19:39

I don't iron anything haven't for years it's all tumble dried or shirts hung when wet never really need a iron !

HarryElephante · 13/04/2019 19:50

Righteo I will totally ignore what you just said then Harry

That was the obvious joke!

EBearhug · 13/04/2019 19:54

who the hell irons things like socks and knickers?

People who have suffered recurrent thrush or fungal infections.

countrygirl99 · 13/04/2019 19:58

Many years ago MIL asked me how I ironed tights because she kept melting them. I think she was a bit shocked that I had never even tried.

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 13/04/2019 19:59

I can see the point if you are in some places in Africa where nasty thibgs can lay eggs in clothes dried outdoors. But to the best of my knowledge that isn't a problem here

booellesmum · 13/04/2019 19:59

My mum irons everything. Knickers, socks, tea towels, towels, sheets...
If she is round when I'm ironing she constantly says "are you not going to iron that" for every item I just fold and stick on a pile to put away.
No, I'm not. Life is too short to iron everything.

pigsDOfly · 13/04/2019 20:00

@EBearhug Ah okay didn't know about that.

lalaloopyhead · 13/04/2019 20:02

My Mum used to iron knickers and tea towels, probably still does. It is a sign of someone with way too much time on their hands, in my opinion.

SinjunRivers · 13/04/2019 20:07

My MIL irons everything.
When we stay there she washes our clothes (they live in a different country) and you get your socks back flat like when they are new.

Hmm at the knickers being lacy too, mine are from ASDA and are entirely without embellishment. I'm not trying to impress DH anymore

SpinneyHill · 13/04/2019 20:08

When they say 'wouldn't be worn in my house' do they mean by themselves or anyone in the house?

Would they check other peoples knickers?

youvegottobekidding · 13/04/2019 20:14

My mum irons knickers, socks, teatowels, towels, bedding and I've also witnessed her ironing HANDKERCHIEFS 😳. Me? Well I iron the kids uniform on a Sunday evening & that's about it! It's the most mind-numbing task and even when I've ironed something, like a blouse, it still looks creased, so I am crap at it!

Eustasiavye · 13/04/2019 20:17

I have never ironed underwear.

naynaybiscuit · 13/04/2019 20:21

I have literally never ironed anything Blush

I think my DM's weird obsession with ironing everything including pants, socks and tea towels has made me think life is far too fucking short for that.

lilabet2 · 13/04/2019 20:24

I have never ironed in my life.

Non-iron shirts are great. Pants get boil washed, dried- why would you iron them?! lol.

wigglybeezer · 13/04/2019 20:27

My mother in law had to confess to melting the lacy side of my washable breast pads, she irons underwear too and also has very elaborate drying and airing systems, I think it goes: wash, dry, air, iron, fold, air on radiator, then airing cupboard, apparently dreadful ailments afflict you if you wear inadequately aired items. DS's washable nappies challenged her!

Aprillygirl · 13/04/2019 20:35

Stop doing it then! Seriously I used to be be a right old fuss pot when it came to the kids uniforms, but then I basically stopped ironing altogether by the time my 4th child came along and they still all looked smart when they went off to school Smile

VampireThriller don’t your outer garments get soiled if you don’t wear foundation garments? Do you wear a fresh change of clothes each day?

Cryalot2 · 13/04/2019 21:13

Seems most are like me . Just would anyone contemplate ironing knickers or bras ?
I do know relatives that do. I think they need a life .
Like who sees them ? Ok in my case young Dr saw both boobs and bra this week. But am not remotely worried.
Life is for living not ironing undies.

vampirethriller · 13/04/2019 22:00

KooMoo yes I wear either clean leggings every day with long tops/dresses or clean jeans.

booellesmum · 14/04/2019 07:00

@wigglybeezer
My mum too - everything has to be aired. She will take things out of my ironing basket, declare them damp and ask if I am going to air them. They are not damp - they have been tumble dried to death.
Wearing clothes that have not been aired means you will get colds/chest infections etc.
@youvegottobekidding
My mum does hankies as well. They have to be folded a certain way as well. I learnt to iron doing hankies. :(

KooMoo · 14/04/2019 09:27

That’s reassuring VampireThriller Grin

EBearhug · 14/04/2019 09:29

Ironing hankies makes sense, sterilise any lingering germs with heat. But everyone I know uses tissues these days.
