My partner got pulled over today from driving without insurance. He claims he thought it had renewed automatically last April and was due at the end of this month... but it hadn't and he's been uninsured for a year.

The police then checked his tax and MOT, and he hasn't done either of those for THREE years!

The car has been taken and he needs to provide evidence of insurance, his logbook and license to get the car back. He also has to wait for further info about being called to a hearing. There's a fine for no MOT.

What on earth happens now? How can he get his car back when there's no tax or MOT? Will he lose his license? He has no other points.

That’s not an oversight. That was deliberate.

Fiveredbricks · 13/04/2019 15:53

If he can find an insurer that will now insure him he has to insure it. Not likely though. Go to court. Pay the fine. Possibly lose his licence. Car will probably be seized.

Fiveredbricks · 13/04/2019 15:54

And sold at auction. Rightly so.

I'd divorce anyone who did that tbh.

notapizzaeater · 13/04/2019 15:54

An oversight is a few days not three years

Spoddy · 13/04/2019 15:54

Pretty serious 'oversights'. He will be looking at hefty fine and points

Farmerswifey12 · 13/04/2019 15:56

He doesn't deserve a license if he can't even make sure his car is roadworthy before putting it on the road surrounded by other responsible road users. Imagine if he had caused an accident!

Perty01234 · 13/04/2019 15:57

Six points for no insurance, won’t be able to get the car back till proof of Insurance and tax are taken to the police station. Re the MOT I’m not sure how this would be arranged..
be prepared to pay a flat fee of around £150 for retention of the vehicle and a daily fee for every day after that it’s been recovered.

Fine for no Mot at court and fine for no tax. To be honest I would imagine he will just get summonised to court for it all

Floralnomad · 13/04/2019 15:57

Hopefully the car will remain seized and sold off and your partner will get lots of points or lose his licence .

GreenTulips · 13/04/2019 15:58

Heavy fine, points or lost licence, car siezed.

You have reminders of tax and mot via the post, insurance companies also send emails (several) if you’ve don’t online quotes you get various companies emails, plies documents in the post.

You also have to pay for these things usually be DD - don’t be a ‘oh he forgot’ he didn’t

He doesn’t deserve to be on the road

whodafeck · 13/04/2019 15:58

I hope he doesn’t get an un-MOT’d for THREE YEARS car back.

OwlBeThere · 13/04/2019 15:58

He’ll need to find an insurance company, (they do exist contrary to what the poster above says) and tax the car onlineThen pay to get the car released. Then get an MOT. If he can’t afford these things then they will keep the car.
He may well accrue enough points to lose his license. It’s 6 for no insurance. Not sure on the MOT/tax issue.

seastargirl · 13/04/2019 16:00

Someone I know used a company called SIS to get insurance they were pretty helpful to him.

What an idiot though, he's been risking all your lives for all that time, I would be livid!

Nameusernameuser · 13/04/2019 16:02

That isn't an oversight. That is deliberate. We get letters about tax and Mots, also insurance. We just got a letter about tax and realised the car hadn't had a service or mot for 3 months and was overdue, car was booked in the next morning.

rhubarbandvanilla · 13/04/2019 16:06

Thanks everyone, I can feel you all share my horror.

He moved just over three years ago and didn't change his address on the logbook- so tax and MOT reminders haven't actually reached him. Honestly, I can't even bear to look or listen to him right now.

Aquamarine1029 · 13/04/2019 16:06

I would dump him immediately. He can't be trusted and will only make your life a misery.

hazell42 · 13/04/2019 16:14

Large fine. Not usually points for tax or mot but 6 points for no Insurance

Poivrotte · 13/04/2019 16:15

I couldn’t bear to be with someone so irresponsible-sorry time to LTB

Floralnomad · 13/04/2019 16:19

Did he change the address on his driving licence because that is also an offence .

Contraceptionismyfriend · 13/04/2019 16:19

Bullshit reminders didn't reach him.
Everyone knows MOT is needed every year unless it's a brand new car. So I would believe him if he was a month off.
3 years he's a ignorant twat and I hope he loses his license.

HollowTalk · 13/04/2019 16:20

How committed are you to this dick man? What's he like in other respects? He's coming across as a lazy, entitled man-child here. Does he pay his way in other respects? Is he a responsible person? Does he have other debts?

MitziK · 13/04/2019 16:22

Nice. He's hasn't changed his address with the DVLA?

That's another grand fine, then. www.gov.uk/change-name-address-v5c

Seriously, you need to split up, because otherwise, you will be paying for his arrogance in thinking it won't matter.

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 13/04/2019 16:22

You can see the possible points here;

Iwrotethissongfor · 13/04/2019 16:23

On the practical side, re the remaining MoT issue, when it’s overdue you are allowed to drive your car directly to the garage for a booked MoT. I’ve done this when car overdue MoT by a few days, Not sure about three years but in theory the principle applies. But your insurance is likely invalid when no MoT so if you need insurance they may not grant it? this might be circular if you need insurance to collect it to then get to MoT Centre. Hmm. Ask those who impounded it it’s probably a likely enough scenario for them. Of course many people might not bother collecting car in these circs so they might not have a solution. How much is your car worth and what are storage etc fees likely to be whilst it’s seized? is it worth cost and hassle of return? Do you have another car?

MoreSlidingDoors · 13/04/2019 16:24

He moved just over three years ago and didn't change his address on the logbook

Also an offence.

Bet he didn’t change the address on his driving license either. Guess what, £1k fine for that.

MoreSlidingDoors · 13/04/2019 16:24

But your insurance is likely invalid when no MoT

Nope. No. No. No no no no no.
