to think my colleagues must either dislike me or not care about me

I've worked in the same organisation for 12 years and tomorrow I'll celebrate a big ZERO birthday.

I came in today and there was a card from the department left on my desk. That's it. It is what they do every year.

Am I BU to feel sad? Every time anyone wants a moan or a whine, they all make there way to my office to unburden themselves. I organise cards for other people, leaving dos, celebrate significant years of employment, organise parties and so on for other people's big ZERO birthdays but it seems like not one person could be bothered to remember mine.

Just in case anyone is thinking, there will definitely be no surprise later.

That’s a bit rubbish considering the effort you go to for others. I’m one of the people in the office who wouldn’t want a fuss (no one knows when my birthday is and that suits me fine, I’ve hidden it on Facebook too) but if I knew it was someone’s big zero birthday and they are the kind of person that organises celebrations for others I’d be more than happy to organise it for them! All this ‘I hate celebrating my birthday and everyone else should expect nothing too’ feels a bit inward looking to me.

Anyway, I’m glad you’ve got nice plans with friends and family. And I’d bet my bottom dollar (if your work colleagues are generally nice people) that they forgot it was a big zero birthday and not a regular one. Happy birthday!
