Sick of Prosecco Cards/quotes

... I know Prosecco is nice but really is it that nice?

On Mother's Day more than half the cards seemed to relate to Prosecco / wine.... clothes have messages about Prosecco on, gifts.... it's just a bit overkill.

Prosecco - overrated - thoughts?

Before prosecco and gin, it was pinot grigio.

AgentCooper · 12/04/2019 10:28

Tennents Super is regarded as a really high class hipster craft beer in Italy you know #superfact

Grin PaulHollywood when I was at art school in the mid 2000s we all drank Buckfast Tonic Wine. The only people in Glasgow who actually drink Buckie are the try-hard hipsters and the destitute with severe alcohol problems.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 12/04/2019 10:30

Agree the tat products are just another bandwagon and it's very tedious now. Tinitus if you've a library card and have the BorrowBox app it's on there for loan, if you were curious!

A good quality, dry Prosecco though is a lovely drink unfortunately I think we've been inundated with the cheap shite, for example Aldi's is awful, tastes like pure sugar.

Whilst I don't think its always true that with wine you get what you pay for I have found the more I pay the nicer the Prosecco. Cremant is also gorgeous.

Teddy1970 · 12/04/2019 10:32

I wonder if Special Brew will become a fad...

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 12/04/2019 10:32

I work in a gift shop.

Men’s is all cycling, golf and beer.

Women’s is Prosecco, gin and sloths.

This stuff sells by the bucketload. So plenty of people obviously lap it up.

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 12/04/2019 10:33

Oh and pugs and dachshunds are very in right now as well. Weird.

Roomba · 12/04/2019 10:43

It's just depressing discussing corrective surgery when somebody brings in a new puppy to the vet clinic, which they got because they are so fashionable

At least the unicorn and rainbow llama fad doesn't result in animal suffering, I suppose.

Yes @agentcooper this! As a Scot I know a couple of “Buckie Hipsters” (Gray’s School of art tho) and we were just floored when we saw the big fancy puff around “Super”’when we were having a fancy dirty weekend in Rome a while back.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 12/04/2019 11:05

I don't like any of it, but clearly there are enough people who do or it wouldn't sell. To each their own I guess.

AgentCooper · 12/04/2019 11:10

@PaulHollywoodsSexGut Grin God, I can’t imagine drinking Super. What’s next, Kestrel?

Lifeover · 12/04/2019 12:18

Ive noticed its slowly being replaced by Gin. Think the merchandise is lagging behind drinking habits!

What's worse is the senders of such cards invariably write "saw this and thought of you, don't know why - haha!"

But yes its a drink - I would think being obsessed with it beyond the scope of a night out is bordering on a problem

DuggeesWoggle · 12/04/2019 12:40

I think what irks me most about this whole gin/prosecco thing I'd that it makes it seem as though these are the only 2 drinks that women are allowed to drink. We even had a gin and prosecco festival nearby recently Hmm. From all accounts it was very popular.

And all these people going on about how great gin is - bet they didn't drink it back when you could only get Gordon's in a pub. No doubt many of them will move on when the next fad comes along, leaving the thousands of tiny gin-based businesses to change their core business or close.

How about schnapps next?

StealthPolarBear · 12/04/2019 12:42

Yes I'm don't understand what all the current gin drinkers drank ten years ago, but I don't remember many people drinking it on nights out.
I quite like vodka but otherwise can't stand all spirits. I drink red wine and sparking white, cava and prosecco now it's everywhere and that hasn't really changed all my adult life.

lotusbell · 12/04/2019 13:00

This is one of my huge pet hates. Gin/wine/prosecco o'clock. The unfunny slogans and idea that every mum likes it. I barely drink and if I do, its whiskey or similar. Don't need anything in my house or on my person which refers to this. I hate the idea that every mum must chill out with a glass after a hard day parenting. I hate the notion that everything revolves around having a drink. I did all that when I was at college and university, I dont feel the need to still get plastered at nearly 40. I also hate mum's/schoolmum's nights out, photos of a bunch of lairy women getting pissed, on Facebook. I have friends who do this. The idea you have to go on this wild night out as a once a month stress reliever for all the hard work of being a mum. And my final pet hate, those books like "Why mummy drinks". Its not the new norm. If you're stressed/overwhelmed, find other ways to reduce this or help. Not at all sure why it's almost celebrated???

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 12/04/2019 13:01

Duggee I raise you - 20/20! Try being a classy drink on that Grin

I'm very partial to Gordon's but with plain old Schweppes tonic do not get me started on poncy tonics, I WANT TO TASTE THE GIN NOT THE MIXER!

tisonlymeagain · 12/04/2019 13:05

I love prosecco but that doesn't mean I want it plastered all over my house or myself or on a birthday card. I also love broccoli but nobody puts that on a greeting card.

DuggeesWoggle · 12/04/2019 13:06

10 years ago gin was seen as a bit of an old gimmers drink if I remember. I liked it every now and then.

I don't know what we drank tbh. Nothing in particular, whatever we fancied. I think by then the mid 00s flavoured vodka craze had passed.

justasking111 · 12/04/2019 13:11

Gin is going to get tired too. Whole bars in the cities devoted to flavoured gins. I make sloe gin. My sons used to make concoctions out of vodka and soaked candies, freeze them and have shots.

Pony was a drink invented to flog sherry, Merrydown - cider, Cherry B (leg opener)

It`s all marketing.

Sera22 · 12/04/2019 13:13

A friend of mine works for a brand agency, and I remember a few years ago they told me they we're working on a project to try to make prosecco cool and popular, as at the time, it didn't sell particularly well in the UK compared to cava. I'm always amused by the fact they seem to have succeeded beyond anyone's wildest dreams!

I like prosecco (though prefer champagne...), gin, coffee, chocolate and all the rest of it- but I've never felt the need to spell that fact out via my accessories or decor. Doesn't do anyone any harm, but it does seem a bit bizarre.

DIZZYTIGGER87 · 12/04/2019 13:19

I like prosecco, gin etc...but I can't stand the merchandise. Especially the ones that imply that as a woman you live to drink it... I work in a pub, so have an occasional glass of wine but other then that I don't drink much anymore.

Anyway, everyone says it's rum next taking over from Gin...wonder what the cards will say then?

ethelfleda · 12/04/2019 13:22

Someone mentioned upthread that you hope they don’t try this shit with whisky but then probably won’t as it’s not sweet enough...
It made me think of some kind of slogan making JD and coke ‘cool’ whilst trying to claim they’re whisky drinkers when we all know that JD is most certainly NOT whisky and if you even suggest trying to mix Pepsi with my single malt speyside I will beat you senseless for being such a Philistine.

Ohhellothereladyface · 12/04/2019 13:24

While on the subject, the endless T-shirt’s/notebooks etc that say “be yourself, unless you can be a unicorn”
Ridiculous

StealthPolarBear · 12/04/2019 13:25

Pirates will be the new unicorns

justasking111 · 12/04/2019 13:28

Dizzy funny you should say that. Son works in a bar, word on the street is high strength rum is the next big thing.
