Just in Superdrug and seen that we now have the option of scented tampons. What the absolute fuck is going on??? How to make women even more paranoid than ever Angry

I’ve never ever “got” why anyone would want I use a scented tampon or pad.

I understand the rationale for scented feminine hygiene bags; but having something zofloraesque so close to my flaps or IN ME is a bridge too far, I would rather not expose down there to industrial perfume that would probs give me thrush.

Yuk.

ArabellaDoreenFig · 11/04/2019 16:34

I’m getting thrush just thinking about them

Me too! I also don’t like the message it sends out - women be ashamed of your periods.

DontCallMeShitley · 11/04/2019 16:36

This smelly stuff is a follow on from Femfresh when it was hinted at that freshening up during a busy day would be a good thing, powder, wash and little wipes. Now it is difficult to buy anything 'feminine' that doesn't stink.

What annoys me also, is that Dr. Sarah Jarvis who knows (or should know) about the irritation and suchlike that these items cause, actually promotes them in advertising.

I am also thinking that washing is becoming less of a thing because some women seen to think that using perfumed items means that no-one can smell that they didn't wash. Have moved away from some unpleasant smells which I didn't encounter before these things were marketed.

PCohle · 11/04/2019 16:37

I'm not sure why using scented san pro would mean a woman is ashamed of her period. I use deodorant and air freshener - I'm not ashamed of sweating or shitting, I just don't like the smell.

dementedpixie · 11/04/2019 16:38

I can also smell when I have reached the feminine hygiene aisle. There are surprisingly few non scented products. I tend to use body form or always sensitive as the sensitive ones aren't scented.

YesQueen · 11/04/2019 16:42

Scented toilet roll gets me. Work started using it, I didn't notice until I had two UTIs, having never had one before

hate, hate hate scented products, they always make me itch! Would love to be able to cop with mooncup but its always been a disaster for me.

Amongstthetallgrass · 11/04/2019 16:57

Why the fuck would you put anything scented inside your fanjo?

Deary me..

BarbieJellyBabyBrain · 11/04/2019 17:03

Barbie Of course men also are concerned with feeling and smelling fresh. Why wouldn’t they?

So why is there no mainstream market for Testi-Fresh and the like then? It's because men haven't been socialised to be totally paranoid that their bits are 'gross'.

Obviously most men don't want to absolutely stink, but no way do they give it the same thought as women do, and also they know that good old soap on a regular basis is more than enough to keep things as they should be. No need for billions of specific products.

BettysLeftTentacle · 11/04/2019 17:25

I’ve definitely bought scented pads by mistake so if it is on the packaging, it’s not very obvious. Especially if you’re using a brand you always use and you just pick it up, expecting it to be the same as it has for the past XXX years. I didn’t even realise it was a thing until I opened the packet. At the time I thought I’d just give it a go seeing as I had them anyway and instantly regretted it. I’m very very careful to read the packets before a buy san-pro now but it’s a very easy mistake to make.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 11/04/2019 17:29

Not Aye, sure they changed the contents and not the packaging

It took me a while to realise that it was the scented pads that were causing an issue for me

I just thought it was something to do with my period

But i really don't understand why its such a stretch to belive that someone could buy the same pads for years and it be no problem

And then the manufacturer changes how its made or adds scent etc and then it causes a problem

agnurse · 11/04/2019 17:52

Actually these products aren't safe. Women should NEVER put anything scented down there as it can cause infections.

Phineyj · 11/04/2019 18:25

It has become quite difficult to buy these products without any scent as the packaging doesn't make it clear. I have had to change brand several.times now. You really shouldn't have to.pyll.tje pack off the shelf and smell it! All hail the Co-op who do a good unscented, well adhesive panty liner. Imo the companies are actively reducing choice for those of us who prefer unscented stuff.

EBearhug · 11/04/2019 18:35

I don't understand it. My preference is for non-scented anyway, be it sanpro, shampoo, washing powder or whatever. But I can understand there is a market for scented things. Pads are external, so I can understand why someone might feel the need for scent. But tampons are internal. That is literally the whole point of them. No one should be able to tell whether they're scented at all or not, so what is the point at all?

Shiverrrrmetimbers · 11/04/2019 18:37

The always ones smell so awful now. Every period I think I need to find an alternative - maybe I’ll try Bodyform. I just don’t get it, the smell is nauseating

rosamacrose · 11/04/2019 18:43

A manufacturer will have a product development team to try to sell more than the competitors, won't they although they're all owned by the same conglomerate
Dont buy? Product fails?

MsFanackerPants · 11/04/2019 18:49

I started my period unexpectedly last week after almost 2 years without one (pregnant then breastfeeding). I had to grab what I could from the Tesco near my office. Picked up packet of Always and it wasn't until I got to the loo that I noticed it was a scented packet. It's not obvious (to me anyway) from the front of the packet it is scented and who stands and reads the packets of pads? Well I guess I have to now...

dementedpixie · 11/04/2019 18:52

Don't read them, just sniff them! Always Sensitive and classic are unscented I think. The body form ones say on the front if they are not perfumed

SquishySquirmy · 11/04/2019 18:59

Another one who's bought scented pads by accident before! more than once

It's often not clear at all from the packaging. And yes, completely believable that a manufacturer would change the contents without obviously changing the packaging (try some "improved" Cadburys if you think it's impossible!)

I didn't have an allergic reaction from the pads, but no way am I risking a scented tampon! Terrible idea to stick perfume up there (especially if already showing symptoms of a bacterial infection).

I spend money on nice perfume, that I like. Why smother that to smell like a nappy bin?

Ohyesiam · 11/04/2019 18:59

My teen daughter and a group of her friends came into the house the other day and I knew straight away that one of them ( at least) was on the always. They are typical teens and would be mortified if anyone that they hadn’t chosen to tell knew they were on.
I couldn’t think of a way to mention it without the always wearer feeling shame.
I’ve never found the smell of periods bad, but I find the scent of always, and the subliminal message it gives offensive.

CottonSock · 11/04/2019 19:02

I'm itching thinking about this too. Thanks for the warning
